Tutorial #6

Mobile Logistics and Film Sound – I had a really interesting tutorial with Jonathan today.  We discussed the logistics surrounding my mobile and the ways in which people could access the augmented reality without actually being told what to do. One of the ways in which this might be achieved is to place small QR codes onto each of the active elements of the mobile.  That way when people point their phones at the mobile they will naturally invoke the augmented reality.  I really like this idea and over the next few weeks I will definitely trial this.  On the back of our conversation I am also going to try and stay until at least Wednesday night of the show so that I can see how the vibe and atmospheres change between the bustling private view and a more normal and quieter gallery day. As I’ve noted in my blog before, I have often compared my work to that of a couple of other students from last year.  I felt that my work was really falling short and as a result I have been feeling so dissatisfied with what I’ve done.  Jonathan suggested that maybe the music could be improved […]

Tutorial #5

My Fifth Tutorial – Today I had my tutorial with Betty.  I felt it was a really good session because Betty asked me a number of searching questions.  I thought that I had everything clear in my head about my project, but actually Betty picked up on a number of issues which has given me a lot of food for thought.   Things we talked about included: The consideration of those people working in AI who are tagging images and doing all of the ‘heavy lifting’. Deciding how much of a platform I would like to give to people (key figures in AI development), who already have a large platform.  Might it be better to look at lesser known people working in the AI industry? Why choose to produce a mobile and not a static art piece? Where to show my work – would the CSM exhibition count as a public viewing? How can I ensure that all elements of the piece are accessible to everyone?   I thoroughly enjoyed my chat with Betty because it was really good to have someone really press me about my work.   There are definitely things I’m going to change as a direct […]

Tutorial #4

My Fourth Tutorial – I’ve just finished my fourth tutorial with Jonathan and I’ve come away feeling really excited! I’ve been so tired lately from college work that it was so nice to talk about what I’d been up with my own work.  Jonathan said that he liked my 3 minute video and would like to use it next week as an example for the forthcoming critique sessions.  I think that this will really help me because I’m keen to know how people perceive it.  I already have my own thoughts on this and I would like to know if my research was correct. I discussed my fears about no being able to find some form of collaborative project for my final piece or the final show.  Jonathan suggested that the obvious choice would be to involve the college where I work.  He suggested that hanging my proposed mobile from the level 3 space downwards into the street could work really well.  I absolutely agree!  In fact I really would love to do this! However I’ve got a few reservations regarding logistics.  This is not a bad thing though because it will really give me something to work towards.  I […]

Tutorial #3

My Third Tutorial – After a whirlwind of a few weeks at work, it was really nice to catch up with Jonathan.   Jonathan asked me a number of questions relating to what I thought was going well and what wasn’t working so well.  Currently, I’m really enjoying my Barcelona Graffiti project, but the greatest issues that I’m facing are time constraints due to work.  Luckily we are fast approaching the end of term now, so these pressures should hopefully ease.  I am also very excited about trying the 21 day challenge (Zoom session 29).  I think this is a great idea and it will help keep me focussed and working over the Summer holidays.  I’m particularly interested in Ai developments relating to art so that may be a starting point. I explained to Jonathan about how I would love to get the MACBA involved in some way with my Barcelona Graffiti project. Jonathan suggested that some animation of this project might work well and I think this is definitely something I’ll try.  He also asked why I needed the MACBA on board? Thinking about it, I guess I don’t really, and realistically would they even be interested?  I suppose nothing ventured […]

Tutorial #2

My Second Tutorial – Today was my second tutorial with Jonathan.  It was great to catch up because I have been working really hard behind the scenes and feedback is always welcome.  I had been working on some new ideas and it was great to hear that I am hopefully on the right lines.  Jonathan suggested that maybe I had set myself a few too many aims for my study statement, but on reflection, because of the way I work, he felt that actually I may be able to manage after all. We talked about what I was finding hard at the moment.  I explained that probably the thing I found the hardest was trying to understand the logic of Touch Designer.  This is my generative art software of choice.  It is very powerful software that is best suited to programmers who can program in C and Python.  Sadly, although I am progressing with the Processing programming language I am still struggling with Touch Designer.  I will however persevere and there is a wonderful supportive community around this particular software package ready and willing to answer questions if I get stuck. Jonathan then asked me what I had found the […]

First Tutorial

My First Tutorial Today was my very first tutorial with Jonathan Kearney.  Over the last few weeks I’ve been working hard on my ideas and concepts, so I was a little nervous, just in case I was headed in the wrong direction.  However, I really enjoyed my tutorial! I came away feeling really inspired. Jonathan asked me some key questions about my work. The questions made me think about what I was doing and particularly why. It was good for me to question my own motives.  Jonathan also made a couple of suggestions which I intend to follow up. He recommended speaking to a former student who became incredibly proficient at Touch Designer.  This is one of the programs that I’m trying to learn right now.  Any help I can get with this program is massively welcome. I also enjoyed our 5th zoom session today, with some in-depth conversations about the work by the Brooke and Black partnership. Overall I felt very good about today.  Indeed after our weekly zoom session I even got round to shooting an unboxing of my CHLADNI plate kit, that arrived earlier in the post. I will be posting all about this very soon. Please […]
