Low Residency Day #7

Gallery Visits & Last Day – Sadly today was the last day of the Low Residency.  I headed off to the first venue with Andy (my husband).  Our first visit was the ‘Studio Voltaire’.  We all arrived around 10.00am. We were greeted by two ladies who explained a little about the history of the gallery, the types of residencies available plus the kind of works/artists that were typically supported.     The Rebirthing Room – Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley Below is some information and a short video except from the ‘Rebirthing Room’ installation by Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley.  This installation was the first of two that we saw housed at the Studio Voltaire.     Video Short of the Rebirthing Room     Far From the Start – Jay Bernard The second work at the gallery was a sound installation by Jay Bernard.  Please see below for more information.     Jay Bernard Poster   Corvi-Mora The second galley on our tour was the Covri-Mora, where we visited works by Maiko Tstutsumi.     This was an incredibly calming experience.  I’m not sure if Maiko had specially chosen this gallery to house her work but I felt it was the perfect space.   I […]

Open Evening

Balance of Power – First Showing Tonight was a special night for me because it was the first showing of my prototype mobile called ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’.  I felt so lucky to be showing at ‘The Gallery Paradiso’.  It all came about when a friend of mine called Sue (an excellent photographer currently studying for her own MA) suggested that the call out for ‘Line and Form’ artworks would be a good fit with my mobile because  of its lines of binary code. I was very interested, and luckily the following week Sue showed a video of my mobile to the curator who said he loved it!  Following on from that we had a quick phone call and I delivered the piece the following Saturday. There were some beautiful artworks being shown and I felt quite honoured to be a part of it all.  People really seemed to like the concept of binary code. They thought that the hidden words (Unity in Bits) built into the lines of code was quite a ‘cool’ idea. The curator knows about all of the secrets built into the mobile. However, I chose only to share some of them […]

Pulp Exhibition

If at First You Don’t Succeed – Last year I entered some of my work for the annual ‘Pulp’ exhibition. It’s all about the creative use of paper. I love working with paper and card, so I wanted to give it a try.  Unfortunately, I was working blind, as I was unable to find any examples of work from previous shows.  Below is a photo of one of the pieces I entered.     Although, I was quite pleased with my work at the time, having visited the ‘Pulp’ exhibition (Bovey Tracey), I can understand why my piece wasn’t a fit. However, I left the gallery feeling incredibly inspired. I’ve pasted a selection of works into a photo gallery below.  I’m hoping that there will be another call for entries this year. This is because I feel my work has come a long way since last year.     A Selection of Pulp Art Pieces Below is a selection of art pieces from the Pulp exhibition.  There were also some amazing cardboard sculptures by James Lake. I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition and I’ve got lots of ideas for this year if there is another call for paper artists.

Biscuit Factory Birthday

It’s My Birthday! And Other Things – Today is my birthday and I’m really excited because I’ve received both a mini projector and projection mapping software as presents from my family! I have wanted to try projection mapping for as long as I’ve known of its existence, which is a long time now.  I also recently enjoyed ‘The Van Gough Experience’ in London which added to my enthusiasm. However, because I can see a use for it regarding my MA work, the need to explore it has become much more urgent. At the moment I am visiting family and friends in the North East of England.  Whenever I come up this way I always like to take a trip to Newcastle.  Last year I visited the Laing Art Gallery, this year I decided to take a trip to ‘The Biscuit Factory’.  This is a small gallery just on the outskirts of Newcastle City Centre. Although a small gallery it had both a restaurant and some beautiful art pieces.  It was a different kind of space to the Tate Modern.  The mobiles displayed there were also very different to those of Alexander Caulder. However, the gallery was beautiful and  provided much […]

Calder at Tate Modern

Up Close and Personal with Alexander Calder – In my search for a human, AI and digital hybrid model of art, I came across Alexander Calder. I don’t know why but I instantly fell in love with his kinetic mobiles.  I discovered that some of his models are currently housed in the Tate Modern. I knew that I had a trip to London coming up so I was keen to visit the gallery to see his work in person. It was a great experience! I saw a mobile suspended from the ceiling and one of his ‘Stabiles’ standing firm on a plinth.  I really do find the kinetic motion of mobiles really appealing. I was quite pleased with my very first attempt at this beautiful and mesmerising form of 3d art.  Below is a short video of my mobile in motion.   Random Thoughts Mobile The designs used on the circular parts of my mobile are designs produced by me each week.  They are freehand pen drawings that are subsequently digitised.  Each design represents a state of mind.  I simply let my hand move over the paper and make marks.  It’s completely random.       Calder’s Mobiles at the […]

London Visit

Van Gough Experience & Whitechapel Gallery – “To love many things is to love life, to love life is to be happy.” Yesterday I travelled to London and today while there, I had the opportunity to visit a couple of galleries. Since I became aware of its existence I always wanted to visit the Van Gough immersive experience.  It certainly did not disappoint! I actually learned a huge amount today – so much so that my childhood perception of Van Gough completely changed! Whenever Van Gough was mentioned, either at school or at art college, his persona in my mind, was one of someone who, couldn’t paint very well, went mad, chopped his ear off and then killed himself. In my adolescent mind this was probably as a result of him not being able to paint very well. Clearly my childhood view was both incredibly uniformed and naive and as I learned more about his life and works, my views began to gradually change.  However today was completely revelatory!  Van Gough reimagined for the digital age, complete with a narrative of his life was incredibly moving.  Up to this point I had also been completely unaware of his many words […]

MNAC

Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya –  While I was visiting the Banksy Gallery one of the guides told me that I really needed to visit ‘Museu National d’Art de Catalunya.’  He explained that this was an amazing gallery and a ‘must see’.  He was not wrong!  The museum is set high above Barcelona and the views are breathtaking!  Luckily I had my DSLR with me on this trip, so I decided to take lots of photos.  My memory card was pretty full so I had to be a little careful about wasting frames but I managed to shoot everything I wanted. The building is very imposing! In fact everything about it was imposing, including the security and guards.  After a relaxed and friendly visit to both the Banksy (they actually made me a coffee), and the MOCA and MACBA museums, I was left in no doubt that one false move and I’d be in serious trouble.  One guard shouted at me for just holding a bottle of water – maybe he had heard about the ‘Just Stop Oil’ protests in the UK and thought I was about to throw it over a painting or something? I duly complied and the […]

Banksy Museum

From Start to Finish – Just Superb! – On my way back from visiting the MACBA I started to walk in the direction of the Picasso Museum.  It had been my intention to visit this museum because as a young art student I had been to a London exhibition of Picasso’s sketchbooks.  I have always admired Picasso’s technical drawing skills and creativity, so visiting the Picasso museum made sense to me.  However as I stopped to look at Google Maps in order to orientate myself I just happened to glance at the building to my right.  There was a relatively (could have easily missed) small sign for the Banksy Museum.  I wandered in to see if this museum was taking part in the ‘International Museum Day’ that I had just taken advantage of at the MACBA. The staff at the reception desk said that as it was a private museum then admission wasn’t free.  I asked if there was any student discount and duly pulled out my UAL student card.  The lady behind the desk explained that yes they did give student discount but only to under 25s.  I guess it wasn’t my lucky day.  Feeling quite dejected at my […]

MACBA

The Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona – The MACBA was a short 35 minute walk away from the Hotel Barcelona.  Below is a short video of the route showing some of the surroundings.   En Route to the MACBA     Beautiful Light at the MACBA Before launching into a gallery of artworks at the MSCBA, I want to highlight both the beautiful architecture and light of the building.  I was completely ‘taken’ with the stunning light that streamed through the huge windows of the building.  Indeed I felt that the atmosphere created by the large windows, together with the clinically white interior, architectural angles and vaulted ceilings, warranted a mini photographic project all of its own.  Therefore I decided to take some time out to shoot some of the beautifully lit interiors that were flooded with natural light.  Below is a photo gallery of a photographic study of the light at the MACBA   Self Publishing a Small Book of Beautiful Light at the MACBA On realising that I had produced so many interior images of the MACBA, I decided to try out a few page layouts.  I felt that the images worked well together, so I decided to […]

MOCO

Modern Contemporary Museum – Barcelona – The MOCO was one of the first museums in Barcelona that I visited and it certainly did not disappoint!  Below is a short video of my journey to the Contemporary Art gallery from the Hotel Barcelona.   A short walk to the MOCO     Moving with the Times Not only does the MOCO display static works of art they also display NFT’s, but more importantly they even have some artworks that utilise the power of augmented reality.  Guillermo Lorca produces large visually arresting works.  However these works take on a whole new life of their own when viewed through the MOCO’s very own augmented reality app called MOCO play.     Initially, I hadn’t really taken much notice of the signs for this app, but then my curiosity got the better of me and I’m really glad that it did.  Not only did viewing the artworks via this app add a whole new dimension to them, it also allowed the viewer to video record the experience in-app.  Below is a compilation video that I made of the short augmented reality videos I made in-app.  To say that Guillermo Lorca’s artworks really did come […]
