Five Minute Film

5 Minute Film      LO1       LO2      LO3

“And he proclaimed: Look at what’s begun A world of conquest under the sun.  No laughter heard, no tears to shed.  As we march towards oblivion, blind and misled” – Karyn Easton

Balance of Power Book Imagery

My film is a culmination of my journey experimenting with various forms of art, including printed matter, digital art, animation, AI-generated art, and augmented reality (all clips created are mine). It reflects my original intention (outlined in my study statement) to explore the artistic possibilities emerging from the fusion of physical, digital, and AI realms.

I have woven a narrative that visually tracks my artistic progress, while at the same time juxtaposing a spoken narrative inspired by the biblical concept of the ‘Eighth Day.’  In biblical terms, the ‘Eighth Day’ symbolises renewal and the fulfillment of promises, often preceded by destruction. My film poses a question: Will artists merely accept AI art dominance, or will they evolve alongside it, creating something entirely new from this potential crisis?

Ultimately, from our perspective as artists, will our ‘Eighth Day’ signify artistic destruction through AI art and art-creating robots, or will it herald an evolution in which artists adapt and innovate with new technologies?  Resolve or evolve?  Only we can decide.

Additional Notes and Concepts

The final film above is only one of a number of concepts explored.  There were in fact three film ideas that were trialled among friends and family ahead of choosing the final one above.  Each of these rejected films below, although visually different, still echo the theme that we need to make a decision regarding AI art and its use.  I have included the rejected films and their reason for rejection for comparison.  Out of the three completed films it was the second film I produced that was finally chosen.

Film Idea One – Rejected!

Film idea one was rejected because the audio was poor and also the music was particularly jarring.  The overall concept was relatively clear but ‘boring’.  However, the film did manage to showcase a lot of my work including some of my photography and generative art creations.

Film Idea Three – Rejected!

The third of the films I created (only to reject) was a video I shot to accompany my ‘Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’ book and mobile.  I felt that the mobile needed a level of explanation. I also felt it important that it had its own explanatory book that contained both a concept and a rationale.  Many of my friends and family that I polled actually preferred this video.  However, the overwhelming majority felt that the final video (video 2) was by far a much more creative one.

This video afforded me the opportunity to play a little more with audio, something that I’m now very keen to explore when making any films in the future.  This video does however make a useful and informative accompaniment to the ‘Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’ mobile and its explanatory book of the same name.

Idea Creation and Production Process

Below is a selection of the blogs that lie behind the making of all of the films listed on this page.  Should these blogs not be visible please use the category or tag called ‘Film production’.  I am also including a list of links.

Conclusion

Although each of the films has some interesting elements, on balance, I decided to choose the second one for assessment and feedback.  This was because it has a deeper concept, the audio is much better and the visuals seem to flow.  Ideally with more time, I would have liked to combine elements from all three of the films.  However, I feel that the groundwork has now been laid to further explore my theme.
