Compendium of Favourite Videos – Over the course of the last two years I created around 230 short films. Some of these films documented gallery visits and artist talks, but mainly they followed much of my experimental and development work. Below is a selection of some of my favourite videos. The videos contain a mix of digital art, generative art, AI inspired art from my base images and pure photography. They are in no particular developmental order as the projects were all so different and the experiments explored a wide range of new ideas. Pulling Together Two Years of Work – I’m getting very close now to having completed 300 blogs. When I add in my research paper and study statement and unit pages, then I will have surpassed this figure for writing in general. I may still hit my target of 300 blogs. However, I only want to do this if the work I’m blogging about is relevant to my MA, like the material that’s gone before. Over the last two years, I have read so many books, visited so many galleries, listened to so many artists talks and documented so many of my experiments and creations, that it has resulted in the following: 162 image galleries containing information about books I’ve read, artist talks, gallery visits, and project images etc. 5224 images that I shot over the course of the two years. 87 Before and After sliders (here is an example of these). I have shot approximately 2,500 video clips and animations, that have gone into the making of 230 films dispersed throughout my blogposts. Little Wins #11

University Invitation to Speak at the HE Research Showcase 8th May 2024 – I had another of what I refer to as my ‘Little Wins’ today. I was invited to give a talk about my MA research paper at the University of South Devon’s annual HE Research Showcase. The screening suite is a great venue and I was really excited to be involved. One of my colleagues who works in HE remembered that I had chatted to him about my research paper and that it was primarily about AI art. The focus of the talks this year were about AI, so he notified the organiser who approached me to speak. One of my ex students was in the audience, so I asked if he would shoot a few stills and videos for me. It was a great opportunity to revisit my research paper. A number of students approached me afterwards to say that they had found my participatory talk really interesting. This made my day! Film Concepts

Three Finished Film Concepts – When I started the journey into the production of my five minute film, I genuinely hadn’t expected to end up with three full versions! This really was not my intention. I am very tired now and yet still not completely happy. However, over the summer I do hopefully intend to work on my film making along with many other art related projects. For comparison purposes I have listed them all here. The film I chose in the end was the second film. The reason I chose it was because of personal preference coupled with small polls conducted among family and friends. On my final film page, I have listed the reasons why I rejected film number 1 and 3. Film 1 – Resolve or Evolve? The concept behind this film was simply to show my work while talking about the rise of AI. Final Cut

Film Mark 2 is Finally Done – I really hated my first film so much! The audio was way too noisy and my voiceover audio really wasn’t great either. However, after making a second film, even though I still had clips missing I was feeling more satisfied. In my last tutorial, Jonathan gave me some great pointers regarding music and sound. Looking back over some of my videos, it’s now changed my whole view of them. I think if I was doing them again and adding music, I would take a much more subtle approach. I now find myself taking so much more notice of sound and audio when watching films. This whole film making exercise has been a real ‘eye opener’ for me! Jonathan suggested that possibly tweaking the music in my film might improve it. He gave me a particular tip that I really wanted to try. I went back to the drawing board and I tweaked the latter part of the audio. I slowed down the music to echo the darkening tone of the narrative. I’d never really considered the jungly tone of the piano before, but slowing down the audio really did seem to add impact. […]

Augmenting the Book

Augmenting the Balance of Power Book – As part of my body of work I felt that it was really useful to produce an explanatory book all about the ‘Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’ mobile. When I began the journey into the augmentation of the book I hadn’t really planned to shoot many clips, just enough to fill any gaps in my final film (Film Mark 2) and to give a flavour of the fully augmented book. However, as I began creating each clip I decided to go ahead and augment the full book. This needed to be done anyway as it will form part of my body of work. Once each of the pages had been augmented with video I decided to run all of the clips together to see how it looked. What I hadn’t necessarily expected was that the total length of the resulting film was just over 7 minutes. I wondered therefore, would it be possible to trim and tweak these clips to make the resulting film exactly 5 minutes? Audio Revamp

Missing Film Clips and More Audio – Today after work, I thought that I would afford myself a little break. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t take my mind off my film, so here I am at nearly midnight working on it again. I’ve got to be up for work in a few hours, but at least I wan’t feeling quite so ill today. The more I learn about sound and audio, the more I realise how little I actually know and how much there is to learn! I really can fully appreciate why film companies employ sound engineers. It is a whole art form in itself! Looking back I really wish that I’d paid more attention at college to film and sound. Thirty years ago I was much more interested in just pure photography and photographic techniques, but fast forward to the present and now I am somewhat regretful. There’s just so much that I still want to learn and so much that I want to achieve, I think this latest bout of feeling poorly has really made me reflect. Film Mark 2

Exploring Alternatives – In my Film Production blog, I talked about how unhappy I was with my first film. Things haven’t got any easier. I still feel very poorly, but the perfectionist in me is not prepared to let this go. I absolutely ‘hate’ the first version of my film now! Unfortunately, I just seem to have such a severe creative block at the moment. One of the greatest challenges I faced was trying to come up with yet another script! At one point I thought ‘oh stuff it’ I’ll just stick with what I’ve done. However I just couldn’t do that. I went to bed feeling pretty ill and pretty down. They say that sometimes when you are facing a problem, your brain will help you to work things out while you are asleep. Last week in my state of feeling so down ‘my brain, my subconscious the universe, god’ or call it what you like came to the rescue overnight while asleep! This morning I remembered something that I’d long been aware of yet forgotten. This was the old concept of ‘The Eighth Day’. Assembly of Ideas – After exploring a few possibilities and ideas for the film I set about trying to assemble something. After all of my previous experimentation with many ideas I finally settled on a concept. I decided to produce a film that not only covered what I have been working on over the last two years of my MA but also gives a glimpse of what I’m doing now. The video was to form a timeline. Unfortunately, I really do struggle when it comes to sound and voice-overs. By the end of this long process I had actually attempted to narrate my film around five times. I spent literally hours trying to perfect both my narrative, voice-over and audio levels. Multiple Attempts at Audio and Voice-overs Below is a screenshot of the files as they began to stack up on my desktop, so far I’ve had 5 attempts. Film Ideas

Five Minute Film Ideas Generation – I have to admit that working out what I wanted to do for my five minute film has not been easy. I had a number of ideas whirring around in my head. These included: A simple narrative of my practice and how it has evolved A showcase of my work without any narrative A narrative about what I would do if someone took away my camera A narrative about my mobile and how it has evolved An ‘arty’ film full of visual metaphors An animated film A five minute promo for my mobile with a commercial slant to it For a number of weeks I have been wrestling with all of these concepts trying to work out which one to pursue. I ran through a number of the films created last year. I particularly admire the films by Lauryna Narkeviciute and George Harvey. I found George’s work incredibly powerful and moving. Lauryna’s cool black aesthetic also fascianted me. I think with George’s work it was his professionalism, creativity and meticulous attention to detail that I found most inspiring.
