Mattering Life Day #5

Presentations & Evening Event – This morning the whole room was a hive of activity. We were each given a slot to present our work. Charlotte ‘played a blinder’ because she volunteered for us to go first in order to get it over and done with. I absolutely agreed with her sentiment, because it meant that we could sit back and relax and enjoy the presentations from everyone else. Both Kismat and Hyejo worked phenomenally hard to finish the zine and the Powerpoint presentation respectively. I was really feeling the pressure too because I had a short film to produce. I think as a team we all worked amazingly well together! Framing Prints

Getting Ready for the Gallery Paradiso – It’s been such a busy time for me since leaving London and the Low Residency. Today I’ve been framing all of my prints ahead of taking them to the Gallery Paradiso. They will be shown next week with the private view on Wednesday evening. I would have loved to attend, but I will be back in London for the Mattering Life, Scientist in Residence Programme. Below are a few images of the framed pieces. I think they look rather smart framed. I was quite surprised at how long it took me to frame them, add D-rings and package them up. However I was pleased when it was all done. New Contemporaries Submission

Nothing Ventured… I decided that I would submit some of my work for the new ‘Contemporaries Art Exhibition’. I chose my latest installation piece called ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’. I think that this is possibly one of my strongest pieces out of the three I selected. I’m really keeping my fingers crossed for this one. I also chose my ‘AI Gets Political’ digital art piece and finally the augmented reality animation of my ‘Urban Alchemy’ Book. The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits The Balance of Power Mobile is a complex piece and it has meaning on many levels. At its simplest it is a structure that moves very gracefully and is calming to watch. At its most complex it has many hidden layers detailed below: The mobile comprises 11 lines of individually hand drawn elements that represent the ones and zeros of binary code. The binary code represented in the mobile spells the words ‘Unity in Bits’. It is a visual metaphor representing how our society is ultimately fractured by computers and their code. Digital Art Gets another Showing – After having my ‘Balance of Power’ mobile shown at ‘The Gallery Paradiso’– I was absolutely ‘chuffed’ to be asked for more of my work. The gallery would now like some of my digital work and also some of my photography. Normally they don’t show an artist twice but because they liked my work they decided to make an exception. I might even have to get some business cards printed. I am currently working on a selection of photographic images for them but below is one of the video pieces that has been taken for display. Echoes of Sadness This is a 5 minute digital piece from the height of my despair about AI potentially robbing me of my photography. All of the images in the sequence are mine except the last three which are AI generated. These last AI images represent the tentacles of AI and how people will eventually try to fight it. Open Evening

Balance of Power – First Showing Tonight was a special night for me because it was the first showing of my prototype mobile called ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’. I felt so lucky to be showing at ‘The Gallery Paradiso’. It all came about when a friend of mine called Sue (an excellent photographer currently studying for her own MA) suggested that the call out for ‘Line and Form’ artworks would be a good fit with my mobile because of its lines of binary code. I was very interested, and luckily the following week Sue showed a video of my mobile to the curator who said he loved it! Following on from that we had a quick phone call and I delivered the piece the following Saturday. There were some beautiful artworks being shown and I felt quite honoured to be a part of it all. People really seemed to like the concept of binary code. They thought that the hidden words (Unity in Bits) built into the lines of code was quite a ‘cool’ idea. Off to a New Home – Today my mobile is off to a new home for a little while. It’s headed off to the Paradiso gallery at Bovey Tracey. Where I’ll be one of only 10 artists exhibiting there. Zoom Session 19 (Low Residency)

Low Residency Part 1 – This week there wasn’t a formal zoom meeting due to preparations for both the Interim show and the Low Residency. There won’t be a formal zoom session next week either as this will be right in the middle of the Low Residency. For this reason I have decided to dedicate both zoom session slots to documenting both the Interim Show and the Low Residency. Part 1 will cover the Interim show Private View and Low Residency activities covering Thursday 9th March until Sunday 12th March. I will cover Part 2 next week from Monday 13th March until Thursday 16th of March. The Interim Show (Thursday 9th March – 6.00pm-9.00pm) I was really excited to be travelling to the Low Residency in London. I’m not the most confident of travellers, so I was lucky to have my husband accompany me. We left my car at Paignton boarded the train and headed off to our change at Newton Abbot railway station.
