Compendium of Favourite Videos – Over the course of the last two years I created around 230 short films. Some of these films documented gallery visits and artist talks, but mainly they followed much of my experimental and development work. Below is a selection of some of my favourite videos. The videos contain a mix of digital art, generative art, AI inspired art from my base images and pure photography. They are in no particular developmental order as the projects were all so different and the experiments explored a wide range of new ideas. Book Photography

Product Photography for the Balance of Power Book – My book is now fully augmented and the whole of its contents can be viewed in the augmented reality video that I made to accompany the ‘Balance of Power Mobile. A full digital copy of the book can be found here. The next step in my process was to create an image that would represent my book – something that I could use for social media posts and head up any literature that I might like to send out. It might even form the cover of a brochure about the project as a whole. Contact Sheets from Experimental Shoots Refining the Concepts There are many references to nature in my ‘Balance of Power’ Final 5 Minute Video. Film Concepts

Three Finished Film Concepts – When I started the journey into the production of my five minute film, I genuinely hadn’t expected to end up with three full versions! This really was not my intention. I am very tired now and yet still not completely happy. However, over the summer I do hopefully intend to work on my film making along with many other art related projects. For comparison purposes I have listed them all here. The film I chose in the end was the second film. The reason I chose it was because of personal preference coupled with small polls conducted among family and friends. On my final film page, I have listed the reasons why I rejected film number 1 and 3. Film 1 – Resolve or Evolve? The concept behind this film was simply to show my work while talking about the rise of AI. Augmenting the Book

Augmenting the Balance of Power Book – As part of my body of work I felt that it was really useful to produce an explanatory book all about the ‘Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’ mobile. When I began the journey into the augmentation of the book I hadn’t really planned to shoot many clips, just enough to fill any gaps in my final film (Film Mark 2) and to give a flavour of the fully augmented book. However, as I began creating each clip I decided to go ahead and augment the full book. This needed to be done anyway as it will form part of my body of work. Once each of the pages had been augmented with video I decided to run all of the clips together to see how it looked. What I hadn’t necessarily expected was that the total length of the resulting film was just over 7 minutes. I wondered therefore, would it be possible to trim and tweak these clips to make the resulting film exactly 5 minutes? Audio Revamp

Missing Film Clips and More Audio – Today after work, I thought that I would afford myself a little break. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t take my mind off my film, so here I am at nearly midnight working on it again. I’ve got to be up for work in a few hours, but at least I wan’t feeling quite so ill today. The more I learn about sound and audio, the more I realise how little I actually know and how much there is to learn! I really can fully appreciate why film companies employ sound engineers. It is a whole art form in itself! Looking back I really wish that I’d paid more attention at college to film and sound. Thirty years ago I was much more interested in just pure photography and photographic techniques, but fast forward to the present and now I am somewhat regretful. There’s just so much that I still want to learn and so much that I want to achieve, I think this latest bout of feeling poorly has really made me reflect. Mattering Life Recap

The Mattering Life – Scientist in Residence Full Recap – I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Mattering Life – Scientist in Residence programme headed up by Heather Barnett. I felt this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me that I will never forget. I met some wonderful scientists, fellow students and researchers and also learned lots of new processes, sampled lots of materials and equipment and found new creative ways to explore. Mattering Life Day #5

Presentations & Evening Event – This morning the whole room was a hive of activity. We were each given a slot to present our work. Charlotte ‘played a blinder’ because she volunteered for us to go first in order to get it over and done with. I absolutely agreed with her sentiment, because it meant that we could sit back and relax and enjoy the presentations from everyone else. Both Kismat and Hyejo worked phenomenally hard to finish the zine and the Powerpoint presentation respectively. I was really feeling the pressure too because I had a short film to produce. I think as a team we all worked amazingly well together! PowerPoint Presentation PDF The following PowerPoint presentation was put together by Hyejo who worked really hard on Friday morning to compile everything ready for our presentation. Mattering Life – Day #4

Professor Kosuke Fujishima & More Lab Time – This morning we had a talk by Professor Kosuke Fujishima from the Fujishima Lab at the Earth Life Sciences Institute in the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Experiments from The Grow Lab The plan for today was to to get as much material as possible together in order to assemble a presentation that would align with our chosen topic of ‘Beyond Earth’ and the chemical gardens. Shem the lab technician had suggested that displacing the chemical garden solution and replacing it with epoxy resin might be a great way of preserving the structures. As lab space had been particularly tight in the last ‘Grow Lab Session’ only 3 members of each group were allowed to work in there at any given time. We managed to organise this really well between us. I was interested in recording what was being created and Kismat wanted to remain behind to work on the group’s zine. Mattering Life – Day #3

Choosing a Team – Day three was all about formulating our ideas and finding a team that we each felt most aligned with those ideas. The ideas window had certainly continued to grow from the day before. Topics Begin to Emerge Slowly but surely topics began to emerge. Ideas were grouped onto six white boards. Below are pictures of the whiteboards with ideas. Project Titles Eventually everyone settled on their groups and project titles although some of the decisions weren’t finalised till day four. I was quite worried at first as my ideas just didn’t seem to fit anywhere. I felt quite sad especially as one of the groups was vociferously against any notion of AI. Given my research paper I should have known that some people would be opposed to AI. However, after wandering around aimlessly for a while, I finally found my fit and a great set of team members. Mattering Life – Workshops Day #2

Samples Collection & Experimentation – As we arrived back at CSM most of us were feeling pretty tired. It had been an intense but very enjoyable morning in the science labs at UCL (University College London). However, we were all pretty excited to start collecting our samples. We felt it would be a great idea to collect some canal water, some moss, and some leaves. I was really keen to examine the dregs of my Chai Latte so I popped some in a little sample bottle. I wasn’t so keen to grab the canal water but luckily Charlotte a fellow member of the group was on hand to do this. Charlotte Collecting Samples Below is a mix of clips from Days #1 and #2 – they range from crystal garden crystals, to sample collecting, to fruit fly equipment and oxygen free cabinets.
