Book Making Workshop

Models From the Book Making Workshop – I’ve finally managed to catch up on adding the model making section to the Low Residency Bookbinding Workshop.  Below are some of the models that we made during the workshop.  I really enjoyed this work shop and I thought it would be useful to add some of the folds along with their names.  As I am working from memory I’m hoping that I’ve labelled them all correctly?   The Gate Folds       The Concertina Booklet     The Concertina Booklet with Pockets       The Trouser Leg Fold       The Snake Fold       The Slit Fold       The Single Hole Binding     The Saddle Stitch Binding

Thank you!

Recap & Massive Thank You Everyone! – I don’t tend to talk about it a lot as I find it quite embarrassing – but I suffer badly with travel anxiety (especially on the tube).  I was so pleased this year as many of the events were at CSM.  Having attended the Low Residency last year I’m pretty comfortable now finding my way around campus.  The problems only start when I need to travel to different places around London. Luckily my husband Andy was on hand to get me to any off campus destinations which was really kind.  However while I was out and about I was absolutely ‘bowled over’ by how kind and caring everyone was when I explained how nervous I was at using the tube. Many thanks to Jonathan who kept an eye out for me and Kathryn who helped me navigate to the Bookarts bookshop. Many thanks to Shirin, Betty, Emma and Jo who also kept a watch out for me too. There were also numerous fellow students who helped me out.  I’d love to mention you all personally but my memory isn’t great, so if you did help me out it was so much appreciated! So […]

Low Residency Day #7

Gallery Visits & Last Day – Sadly today was the last day of the Low Residency.  I headed off to the first venue with Andy (my husband).  Our first visit was the ‘Studio Voltaire’.  We all arrived around 10.00am. We were greeted by two ladies who explained a little about the history of the gallery, the types of residencies available plus the kind of works/artists that were typically supported.     The Rebirthing Room – Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley Below is some information and a short video except from the ‘Rebirthing Room’ installation by Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley.  This installation was the first of two that we saw housed at the Studio Voltaire.     Video Short of the Rebirthing Room     Far From the Start – Jay Bernard The second work at the gallery was a sound installation by Jay Bernard.  Please see below for more information.     Jay Bernard Poster   Corvi-Mora The second galley on our tour was the Covri-Mora, where we visited works by Maiko Tstutsumi.     This was an incredibly calming experience.  I’m not sure if Maiko had specially chosen this gallery to house her work but I felt it was the perfect space.   I […]

Low Residency Day #6

David Cross & Ruth Annett Sixa – This morning we had an excellent presentation by David Cross. The discussions we had afterwards were very thought provoking and three hours seemed to fly by in an instant.     David talked about his activism and how he has been a lone voice within CSM regarding climate change. Below are a section of slides from his talk.     Ruth Annett Sixa Ruth gave a presentation about how to value our work as artists.  Sadly, I was quite frustrated by this afternoon’s workshop.  My hearing isn’t great and Ruth had a very quiet voice.  This probably would have been okay, but the acoustics and noise in the room made it impossible for me hear anything.  Others were having difficulty too.  However, from what I could gather, Ruth had some really interesting insights into valuing our work. I really feel that I missed out on this one 🙁  Luckily I managed to photograph a selection of slides.

Low Residency Day #5

Stanley Kubrick Archive & INIVA All I can say is wow! What an amazing day!!  Stanley Kubrick has to be one of my favourite directors of all time. Seeing a part of his archive collection at the London College of Communication is a day I’ll never forget! ‘The Shining’ by Kubrick is one of my favourite films, so imagine how I felt being able to get up close and personal with one of the key props namely the terms and terms of paper carrying the message ‘All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy’.  The fact that Kubrick had his secretary Margaret Adams type out pages and pages of these sheets is an absolute testament to Kubrick’s meticulous attention to detail.     Visit to INIVA After spending some time with the Stanley Kubrick collection we took a long rainy walk to Chelsea College of Art.  This is where the INIVA collection is housed.  We had a leisurely lunch which was very nice – followed by a tour of the INIVIA library.  There was a great collection of a very diverse range of art books.     Tutorials with Daniel and Martina When we arrived back at CSM […]

Low Residency Day #4

Arduino Tones & Artist Talk – Today was a really busy day because my group had a very brain intensive technical making session with Karsten Goodwin. This was followed by an artist talk by Nathan Télémaqu.  I thoroughly enjoyed all of it, but I was soooo tired at the end of the day.   Interactive sound and light workshop (LDR trumpet)  In class, we explored microcontrollers and electronics. We looked at the interplay of light sound and code in a project based learning environment. We used light to bend tones on a custom circuit and learnt how to program and in order to play our own custom instruments. Below are photos of some of the steps that were taken to make our custom circuits and program it to work with an Arduino Uno.   The Workshop Environment   The Breadboard   Wiring Steps   A Selection of Karsten’s Slides Below is a gallery of some of Karsten’s main information slides for future reference.  These include his GitHub address where he will be posting the full presentation.   The Fully Connected Breadboard and Arduino   The Results The start of this video short shows Karsten with the kit fully wired, followed by […]

Low Residency Day #3

Materials Workshop with Julia Flood – Today we had a gallery visit to the New Contemporaries Gallery.  Unfortunately I needed to travel to Victoria coach station (long story), so sadly I couldn’t make it.   Outside Victoria Coach Station   However, I was able to attend the workshop by Julia Flood.  This was all about the range of materials and materials info accessible at the college. To start the session Julia gave us each a pencil and explained how even something as mundane as a pencil has a story.  For example what about the lead in the pencil, the wood that it’s made from, what it is coated in etc. Although some of the background to the pencil could be quite easily researched other parts such as the metal binding of the eraser were not. I found her words particularly thought provoking in relation to my own project work.  I have been working a lot with recycled card and recycled card tubes. Hopefully, these items will have a relatively easy background to discover. However, the key-rings that I have used quite extensively throughout my work, possibly less so. In order to help with the process Julia gave us some sheets […]

Low Residency Day #2

What is Book? Today we had a workshop by Rosie Sherwood all about book book making. We started the session by asking the simple question ‘What is Book?’.     We discussed our answers and Rosie gave us some official definitions to throw into the mix.  Below are a selection of these definitions and a slides for reference.   A Selection of Slides   A Selection of Books Below are a selection of books from Rosie’s book art collection.  Many of them were hand made and all of them were very beautiful!  They gave me lots of inspiration!  There’s just something inherently beautiful about handmade books.  They are so tactile and it was very kind of Rosie to allow us to handle them.   Trip to the Bookarts Bookshop After looking at the example books we headed off to the Bookarts Bookshop near the Old Street tube station.  It was 2 stops on the Northern Line from Kings Cross.  Even though it was a tiny shop it was filled to the brim with all kinds of books with many limited edition of handmade. It was an absolute gem! I could have spent all day there, but we needed to grab […]

Low Residency Day #1

All Things Pink – We had lots of fun today! Alex Schady put on a fab pink themed workshop. If I’m totally honest I struggled to get my sculpture to ‘work’ exactly as I wanted it to, but it was still a great session!  I got a little sidetracked by some of the materials I was using.  I became quite absorbed by the layers of plastic that I could create.  However, the project brief required the sculpture to hold a smartphone.  Unfortunately my sculpture was a little flimsy and my phone very heavy, so it was a recipe for disaster.  Luckily my creation just about managed to make it to the end of the day.  Below is a picture of Alex Schady in the photographic studio wearing his sculpture.  I really liked Alex’s creation, which was a much better and more solid design for holding a smartphone.     Shots of My Creation Below are some shots of my strange pink layered sculpture.  Sadly it really struggled to hold my heavy iPhone.  However, I did manage to shoot some video.     Textures I was really intrigued by the textures created by the plastic layers of my creation.  So when […]

Low Residency 2024

Off to London – I arrived quite early at the CSM show and I bumped into Donald which was great.  It was so nice to see a friendly face. Shortly after, Jo arrived followed by Emma and Sean.  I enjoyed seeing see them all again. I finally met Betty in person which was really lovely.  I was excited to tell her some of my news because she had given me some great ideas during tutorial regarding my project. I briefly saw Jonathan which was great, but sadly I had to dash off, so I didn’t have much time to stop and chat. There we’re some really cool artworks on display, below is a selection of a few of them.   A Selection of Artworks I really enjoyed browsing all of the artworks.  I’m looking forward to seeing them tomorrow in daylight as well.  Below is a small selection of the works.   Great Beer Too! Another highlight of the evening was the free beer.  The beer was fab, but what really intrigued me was the design on the tins.
