Summary of Progress

Summary and Evaluation of Overall Progress –   “Art is the soul’s reflection, echoing humanity’s quest for unity amidst the bits and bytes of our technological evolution.”   Out of all of the sections of Unit 3, this one (LO3), has by far been the most difficult for me to complete.  Partially because it is the last one and I’m really sad about that, but also because I genuinely don’t know where to begin.  At one point I even considered just feeding my words from the first section into ChatGPT.  However I wanted my final piece of writing to come straight from the heart.  This is because over the last two years I have been on a transformative journey.  When I began the course most of my creative activity revolved around macro photography and I had a deep love of the subject.  I saw myself initially using this skill and refining it further to create more and more interesting art pieces.  However, in the midst of all of this I witnessed the rapid rise of text to image and text to video AI industrialised art. I just instinctively knew that my time as a fine art photographer was  drawing to […]

Deep Reflection

Summary of My Reflective Process – Over the last two years, I’ve found it incredibly useful to engage in a deep reflective process.  This has proven an invaluable activity in helping to shape my work moving forwards. Throughout my course I have always made time to look back on what I have been doing with a critical eye.  Below are all of the links associated with this activity.   My 2 Year Reflective and Evaluative Process Reflection Part#1 Reflection Part#2 Reflection Part#3 Reflection Part#4 Reflection Part#5 Reflection Part#6 Reflection Part#7 Reflection Part#8   Additional Reflection (Unit 2)

Reflection Part 8

Looking Back Over the Last Few Weeks – So much has happened over the last few weeks.  It has been a real rollercoaster of emotions and a severe dose of food poisoning hasn’t helped.  Reflection Part 7 nicely summarises unit 2.  It also summarises much of my thinking in terms of ideas and project work for Unit 3.  However, this reflective session 8 will cover my progress as I’ve moved into Unit 3.  Hopefully the progression of ideas from Reflection Part 7 can be seen in this current Reflection Session 8.   Below are the usual set of questions that I use to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   WHAT HAVE I DONE SO FAR? Here is a short recap of what I’ve been doing since the beginning of Unit 3 and from Reflective Session 7, right up to this point in time.   As part of my ongoing project work I wanted to 3d print my own robot.  I embarked on the project but ran into multiple problems.  If I have time […]

Reflection Part 7

Looking Back on This Term – It’s not actually that long since I reflected on my work. My last analysis was for the final learning objective of Unit 2.  A recap of everything that I did for this unit can be found here. Following on from Unit 2, below are my thoughts from the start of Unit 3.   Below are a set of questions that I use to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   WHAT HAVE I DONE SO FAR? Since the end of last term, I’ve been acutely aware that time is slipping away.  Therefore, as soon as Unit 2 was complete, I began thinking about Unit 3. My primary aim was one of consolidation.  In Unit 2 I had been exploring so many ideas that I felt now it was time to bring everything together.  Here is a short recap of what I’ve been doing since the beginning of this year up to this point in time.   Right at the very end of term I was already thinking ahead […]

Feedback

Thoughts Firing Actions – I’ll not lie, I was feeling so happy with my grade from Unit 2.  Ahead of receiving my grade, I was so worried that I had completely messed up with regards to my thinking.  I knew that there was a depth to my work still lacking, but I just couldn’t quite put my finger on it.  Then I received my feedback!  This put beautifully into words exactly what I was feeling.  There had to be something deeper to what I was trying to achieve.  It’s really not enough to simply use AI and it’s crucial that investigations go much further. I decided that I would try to dig a little deeper and ‘go under the bonnet’ of AI.  What exactly is AI and machine learning? How easy is it to master?  Can a non programmer access it? Could there be a creative use for it beyond simply using it and tapping into the vast wealth of humanity that created it without being asked? I decided that in order to move forward I needed to train one of my own models.  I wasn’t sure where to start so I asked my old friend ChatGPT.  The bot suggested […]

Reflection Part 6 (Blogpost 100!)

It’s Actually Blogpost #118! – Having completed 30 weeks and indeed the whole of our first year, I thought that now would be the perfect time to reflect ahead of my last tutorial of this academic year with Jonathan.  It’s an opportunity to look back and really start to analyse the direction of travel of my work. As usual I will answer the following questions to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   WHAT HAVE I DONE SO FAR? Since my last reflective blog, as always, I have been very busy trying out new ideas and experimenting with them.  However, much of the work leading up to this reflective session has involved a lot of preparation for my initial research paper proposal. I found these preparations extremely valuable because it really did make me question exactly what it is that I am trying to achieve? Below is a short summary of everything that I’ve covered since my last reflective session along with links to the relevant blogs. Zoom Session 19 – The Low Residency […]

Reflection Part 5

The Last Few Weeks – As we are now approaching the last two weeks of our first 20 weeks, I thought that now would be the perfect time to catch up as our unit 1 draws to a close. However, much of the work leading up to this reflective session has involved a lot of preparation for my study statement and preparations for my Unit 1 assessment.  I found these preparations extremely valuable because it really did make me question exactly what it is that I am trying to achieve? Below is a short summary of everything that I’ve covered since my last reflective session along with links to each blog. Study Statement – […]

Reflection Part 4

The Last Few Weeks – It’s been a little while since I last sat down and actively engaged in a full reflective process. As the last term has now come to a close I thought that now would be the perfect time to catch up on this before the new term gets into full swing.  It’s an opportunity to look back on the first semester and really start to analyse the direction of travel of my work. As usual I will answer the following questions to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   What have I done so far? Since my last reflective blog I have been very busy trying out new ideas and experimenting with them.  I also took the opportunity to catch up at Christmas with all of the online Monday Guest Lectures, I have still to catch up with the Dean Kenning Lectures which I am looking forward to, as soon as time is permitting.  The Monday Guest Lectures were really informative and I detailed the main points from each speaker. […]

Reflection Part 3

The Last Few Weeks – I’m currently sat on a train to London. The act of staring out of the window means that now is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the last few weeks. Since writing my last reflective blog I have been experimenting with a number of ideas and images. I have also been steadily working away in the background on a variety of software tutorials. As usual I will answer the following questions to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   Reflective Video Before I answer the above questions I wanted to add this little video which I felt complemented my reflective process. The video is a time-lapse looking up at the sky through one of our sky lanterns.  I’m interested in the passage of time and if you look closely you can see the clouds as they whiz past.  I find the movement of the clouds as they pass overhead quite fascinating. A time-lapse speeds up the passage of time so it is possible to appreciate more fully the motion […]

Reflection Part 2

Week Six Reflection – I think that it is really important to take time out to reflect.  The questions I am using for that reflection are the ones from my first reflection.  These are as follows:   What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   Before I answer these questions, I think that it is important to look at the goals that I set myself last time and see how many I achieved.  There is a ✅ next to those I achieved.  The goals that I set myself were as follows:   Continue my blog ✅ Document my new found artist David Spriggs ✅ Ensure my blog is adequately backed up – (a backup has been taken but still requires investigation) Film an unboxing of my CHLADNI kit ✅ Film an unboxing of my sand pendulum ✅ Document my idea links (masses of these) ✅ Start the mind mapping process and film it’s development – (still to be done) Start formulating my ideas – (still to be done) Begin more formal research – (an ongoing process) Start experimenting and shooting with my […]
