Zoom Session 35

Group Critique #1 – Today we had our first group critique ‘crit’.  I was in a group with Donald, Ellie, Sean and Shirin.  It was really great to see how everyone was getting on.  Sean spoke about his paintings, Ellie showed some images of her sculptures and Shirin showed her large painting about Utopia.  To see everyone working so well with physical materials was great and it has only strengthened my resolve to edge closer to physicality.  I had some nice feedback.  Ellie definitely ‘hit the nail on the head’ when it came to understanding my thinking.  The MACBA Metamorphosis work is all about giving recognition to the graffiti artists of Barcelona.  It’s about placing them into one of Barcelona’s most prestigious art galleries where they too can have a voice.  It’s about disrupting the average of that museum and filling it with something that may never appear there. Ellie also recommended the work of Peter Fluck as he had made some interesting mobiles.  I am particularly fascinated by mobiles at the moment so any ideas are very welcome. Shirin felt it would have been nice if there was perhaps some of my own drawings as part of the project. […]

Zoom Session 24

Photograph Analysis & Research – Christabel Harley I’m actually filling in this zoom session retrospectively as this is the first opportunity for the last 3 weeks that I’ve been able to blog.  This is one of our busiest times of year at work. Prepping all of the students for their art exams although, very enjoyable and rewarding, is also very stressful and time consuming.  Therefore it’s nice to be able to sit down and finally catch up on events. Christabel’s talk was excellent! I wasn’t sure if I was approaching my research paper properly.  However, when she explained about putting everything into a metaphorical ‘paper bag’, tucked safely away for further use, things started to make sense.  This is pretty much how I’ve been approaching the project up to now, so this validated my methodology. During our session we looked at a particular piece of research.  It was called ‘The Art of Semi Living’ by Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr. Looking at this paper was actually really helpful on two counts.  Firstly, we were tasked with reading only the first sentence of each paragraph to get a ‘feel’ for the paper.  This isn’t something that I had tried before, so […]

Zoom Session 23

How to Read a Book & Other Ideas – This week was all about reading and getting the most from it.  Apparently Kevin Kelly the founder of Wired magazine had said that we are now in an age where we are moving from book literacy to screen literacy.  As part of this we discussed the F pattern of eye movements when tracked across a screen.  I always enjoy our group sessions and find the information from them really useful.  I discovered that that there is something called ChatPdf which I would like to explore further.  I would also like to try out ‘Voice Dream Reader’ and ‘Speechify’ which are text to audio generators. We also looked at the ‘Pomodoro’ technique as a way to approach the research for the research paper.  An outline of how this technique should be used is summarised in the slide selection below.  I intend to try this as I think it will be very helpful as both a time management and motivational tool. Perhaps the biggest takeaway for me this week though, was the notion of: ‘I feel’, ‘I wonder’, ‘I think’.  I’d never ever thought about something in those terms before and this week […]

Zoom Session 17

Guest Speaker Matt Fratson – This week we had a guest speaker called Matt Fratson who talked about one of his films.  The film was very interesting and also very thought provoking.  In order to absorb the film in its entirety we watched it twice and we did a 5 minute free writing exercise after the first viewing.  Below is my free writing exercise.  We also briefly discussed 3 useful websites which I’ve also listed below: a-n The Artists’ Information Company – information for artists Artquest –  advice for artists The White Pube – opportunities for artists   Five Minute Free Writing Exercise These we’re my handwritten digitised thoughts below. Interestingly I had picked up on the fact Matt hadn’t added a question mark after two of his text questions ‘Am I moving forwards’ and ‘Am I looking backwards’ the reason for this was that he had created his own font from his own childhood writing but not been able to source a question mark. Interesting…         Updated Zentangle Gallery
