Pen Drawings

Original Drawings – I’ve never actually revealed any process behind the textural images that I used on the elements of the ‘Balance of Power Mobile’. I feel that now might be a good time to show some of them. As my drawings were actually always meant to be incidental to my work I tended to neglect this. It was just idle doodling on my part – or was it? I found that I really enjoyed the digitisation process of the drawings and particularly cleaning them up. I found sitting quietly with ‘Photoshop Fix’ and its excellent spot healing brush was really quite cathartic. As I mentioned in earlier posts I gave myself strict rules for these designs. They had to be drawn freehand and if any mistakes were made the mistakes had to be woven into the design and not erased or covered up. I’m not entirely sure why I self imposed these rules other than to make the drawing process more interesting and challenging. Below are a selection of images from my sketch books. Zoom Session 50

How to Value Your Art – As it was the Low Residency we didn’t have a formal zoom session today so Jonathan streamed and recorded the ‘How to Value Your Art’ workshop. I was there in person and I made the following notes: Low Residency Day #6 Sadly the acoustics weren’t great but Ruth provided some excellent slides and food for thought. There is no Zentangle gallery update this week. I hope to recommence this as soon as possible.

Zoom Session 49

Time is Running Out Fast! – Today we talked about the end year show. Betty showed us some of her work which was absolutely fascinating! I am intrigued to learn more. Jonathan came along and joined us at a later stage and gave us some key dates and information relating to the ‘Unit Three’ assessment. We need to produce a five minute film by the 7th of May. This is only around 6 weeks away! I know I keep saying this, but I just cannot believe how fast the time is going. In many respects I feel a little sad because it’s only now that I feel I’m really starting to get to know people. This week is the start of the ‘Low Residency’ and after another week of getting to know people it’s such a shame that it will soon be over. Zoom Session 48

Double Loop Learning – Today’s session covered some of the information we needed regarding the end of year show. We also had a small discussion session on ‘Double Loop Learning’. I was in a discussion group with Jo and Emma which was nice and we chatted using a predefined list of questions as a basis. Below are a selection of slides from the presentation. Sadly since commencing work on my large mobile structure I’ve not had any time to update my Zentangle Gallery. However, I’m hoping to have a catch up session over the Easter holiday period. This is as well as catching up on all of the guest lectures that I’ve missed. I used to really enjoy these and I found then very inspirational so I am looking forward to making time for these. Zoom Session 46

Presentations – My Turn – Today was my turn to present my research paper. I saw this as a great opportunity to retest my hypothesis. I thought it would be interesting to make the presentation interactive and pose the same questions as were asked in my original Facebook Polls. All of the background to this can be found in my research paper. I was pleased that people decided to join in. Although there were not as many respondents as in my original paper, the results were broadly in line with the findings from my Facebook Polls. For example most people in my polls wanted to remain with their original choice of images and generally found the humanoid robotic art less disturbing than the AI labelled art. Ester was also presenting today. Ester was examining the work of Rob Pruitt and emotions in art. I found her presentation really interesting. Ester noted that my paper and her paper could be potentially linked. This is because examining the emotions found in AI art would be a great next step in her investigations of art and emotion. Zoom Session 43

A Sense of Place and a Sense of Dying – Rebecca and Jo did an amazing job this week presenting their research paper work. Rebecca spoke about the art of dying and how this was depicted centuries ago. While Jo was looking at place and what that actually means. I was really intrigued by both. I copied some of the slides as little reminders of key points and I hope they don’t mind? Zoom Session 42

Exploring Research Papers – Today was a really interesting session. Jason and Thomas were the first in our class to present their research papers. Jason was looking at how humans had in the past and continue today to affect the planet. It was a fascinating presentation. There was a really poignant part in it where someone described in blunt terms how she saw her husband being blown up. It is so sad and incomprehensible how humans treat each other. Thomas spoke about his research findings which were linked to gender. He had noticed through his work that generally girls tend to favour art much more than boys. Thomas is doing some excellent work teaching art to young boys in the Arab Emirates. He had produced an interesting piece of work. We had some really good discussions about the presentations and I’m looking forward to next week. Sadly due to a week of ‘manic mobile making’ I probably won’t be able to produce a new Zentangle. I am still hopeful that I will be able to pick this up again soon.

Zoom Session 41

First Day Back – Today was out first day back and we split into two groups so that we could watch the remainder of the 3 minute videos. Today we watched: Emma, Ester, Noah’s and Thomas’s videos. What I really love about these videos is that each one is so totally unique. For example we went from microwaving a variety of metals (Noah’s video), to pumping and popping balloons (Ester’s video). We watched dead animals juxta posed with beautiful paintings (Emma’s video) and then on to an expanse of Arabian desert viewed from a breathtakingingly high mountain ledge (Thomas’s video). Sadly, because I had so much to do for work I couldn’t stay right to the very end of this session. I also didn’t manage to do a Zentangle drawing either. However, I do hope to catch this up shortly. It was so lovely to be back! – I know that the end of term is fast approaching and I also know how much I’m going to miss these sessions.

Zoom Session 40

The Last Session of the Year – I cannot believe how quickly the time has flown over. We are already two thirds off the way through our course, and I can’t believe there’s only 20 weeks left! We had a critique/affirmative feedback session to round off the end of this term’s last Zoom session. I felt this was a really nice way to end the term as I was really excited to see how everyone had got on with their 3 minute videos. My group included: Donald, Ellie, Delphina, Shirin, Jason and Sue. There were quite a few others, but my memory is terrible at the moment, so many apologies to everyone that I missed. We watched presentations from: Shirin, Jason, Ellie and Delphina – all of the videos were totally unique, and it was lovely to see such a diverse range of talent! Sadly, as I am moving through the course I’m now not sure if I will be able to maintain my weekly Zentangle drawings. Zoom Session 39

AI and (3 Minute Video) Affirmative Feedback – I cannot believe that this is the penultimate zoom session of this year! I was really excited today because my three minute video was used as a test for the start of the crit sessions. I was really pleased with the comments because I can now use these to help inform my work going forward. I was quite nervous at how my video would be received, but I think on the whole, judging by the comments, it wasn’t so bad 🙂 As an extra form of feedback called ‘Affirmative Feedback’, everyone was asked to respond to the sentence: “What worked for me is…” The other respondents were then invited to agree or disagree with this by giving a thumbs up on the recorded session from today. I am including a link to this week’s video as peoples’ comments and reactions will again be useful in helping to inform my work going forward.
