My Fourth Tutorial –
I’ve just finished my fourth tutorial with Jonathan and I’ve come away feeling really excited! I’ve been so tired lately from college work that it was so nice to talk about what I’d been up with my own work. Jonathan said that he liked my 3 minute video and would like to use it next week as an example for the forthcoming critique sessions. I think that this will really help me because I’m keen to know how people perceive it. I already have my own thoughts on this and I would like to know if my research was correct.
I discussed my fears about no being able to find some form of collaborative project for my final piece or the final show. Jonathan suggested that the obvious choice would be to involve the college where I work. He suggested that hanging my proposed mobile from the level 3 space downwards into the street could work really well. I absolutely agree! In fact I really would love to do this! However I’ve got a few reservations regarding logistics. This is not a bad thing though because it will really give me something to work towards. I suffer badly with heights and this could prove a challenge working from level 3. I rarely venture up there now because I feel so queasy just thinking about it. However having viewed the recent huge hanging installation at the Tate Modern, I’m feeling inspired.
I’ve lots of questions to ask myself. Would I even be capable of such a huge undertaking? What are the logistics? What are the Health and Safety implications? – what are the best materials? I would not like anything to fall on anyone’s head! There is this aspect to be considered but also what might the mobile be constructed from. Currently I’m working with cardboard covered in white paper. It actually works quite well. Jonathan suggested maybe getting the marine apprentices involved or drawing upon the local fishing and boating heritage. This is definitely an avenue to explore.
I know that I would like to continue along the lines of a human, AI and digital hybrid piece. I would also like to incorporate the idea of augmented reality and if possible add some projection mapping into the mix. However, the actual outcome will be to do with curiosity. Although the mobile piece will be a ‘thing’ in itself, what I really want to expose is the human curiosity element to it. How would people react to this mobile structure? Curiosity has helped humans evolve and as a result we now have AI art, augmented reality and digital art etc. What if you can capture human curiosity? I certainly think a large structure with hidden facets pertaining to augmented reality might be one way to do it?
Jonathan came up with a great idea which I particularly liked. This was to construct the mobile one piece at a time maybe adding an element day by day until the structure was complete. I really like this time based idea as time-lapse photography has been a feature throughout my blogging work.
Jonathan suggested that I take a look at the work of Alex Chinock?? But I can’t seem to find him, so I’ll ask about this next time I see him.
I certainly feel more focussed! And as soon as I’ve completed my Unit 2 work. I am going to explore the world of huge mobile model making and hanging.
Just for Context 🙂
Please see below for an image of the space. It’s a daunting prospect but I think I’m up for the challenge! 🙂
