James Lake – Artist Talk

Amazing What Can be Done With Cardboard – Today we were very privileged to have the amazing James Lake giving a talk on campus.  A friend of mine had previously introduced me to his work, so I was really excited to meet him in person. His cardboard sculptures are absolutely stunning! We were also really privileged because we were the first people to see his newly animated film.  James had worked with an animation company to animate one of his cardboard sculptures that was based on himself.  Unfortunately, I don’t have a link to show this as he hasn’t gone public with it yet, but it really was superb! Below I have posted a selection of slides for reference.   A Selection of Slides

Book Making Workshop

Models From the Book Making Workshop – I’ve finally managed to catch up on adding the model making section to the Low Residency Bookbinding Workshop.  Below are some of the models that we made during the workshop.  I really enjoyed this work shop and I thought it would be useful to add some of the folds along with their names.  As I am working from memory I’m hoping that I’ve labelled them all correctly?   The Gate Folds       The Concertina Booklet     The Concertina Booklet with Pockets       The Trouser Leg Fold       The Snake Fold       The Slit Fold       The Single Hole Binding     The Saddle Stitch Binding

Low Residency Day #7

Gallery Visits & Last Day – Sadly today was the last day of the Low Residency.  I headed off to the first venue with Andy (my husband).  Our first visit was the ‘Studio Voltaire’.  We all arrived around 10.00am. We were greeted by two ladies who explained a little about the history of the gallery, the types of residencies available plus the kind of works/artists that were typically supported.     The Rebirthing Room – Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley Below is some information and a short video except from the ‘Rebirthing Room’ installation by Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley.  This installation was the first of two that we saw housed at the Studio Voltaire.     Video Short of the Rebirthing Room     Far From the Start – Jay Bernard The second work at the gallery was a sound installation by Jay Bernard.  Please see below for more information.     Jay Bernard Poster   Corvi-Mora The second galley on our tour was the Covri-Mora, where we visited works by Maiko Tstutsumi.     This was an incredibly calming experience.  I’m not sure if Maiko had specially chosen this gallery to house her work but I felt it was the perfect space.   I […]

Low Residency Day #1

All Things Pink – We had lots of fun today! Alex Schady put on a fab pink themed workshop. If I’m totally honest I struggled to get my sculpture to ‘work’ exactly as I wanted it to, but it was still a great session!  I got a little sidetracked by some of the materials I was using.  I became quite absorbed by the layers of plastic that I could create.  However, the project brief required the sculpture to hold a smartphone.  Unfortunately my sculpture was a little flimsy and my phone very heavy, so it was a recipe for disaster.  Luckily my creation just about managed to make it to the end of the day.  Below is a picture of Alex Schady in the photographic studio wearing his sculpture.  I really liked Alex’s creation, which was a much better and more solid design for holding a smartphone.     Shots of My Creation Below are some shots of my strange pink layered sculpture.  Sadly it really struggled to hold my heavy iPhone.  However, I did manage to shoot some video.     Textures I was really intrigued by the textures created by the plastic layers of my creation.  So when […]

Visual Exploration #2

Video Exploration of the Mobile – In my first visual exploration of the ‘Balance of Power’ mobile I shot a number of stills using a wide aperture.  This was to allow for only a narrow band of focus on each of the images.  The goal was to add an air of mystery to the mobile and hopefully leave the viewer wanting to know more? In part #2 of this ongoing visual exploration I shot some videos using my DSLR camera. My aim again was to add an air of mystery to the finished video clips.  Below are the experimental results from this endeavour.     The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits Mobile This is a complex piece that has many hidden layers to it. Below are some of the key points:   The mobile comprises 11 lines of individually hand drawn elements that represent the ones and zeros of binary code. The binary code represented in the mobile spells the words ‘Unity in Bits’.  It is a visual metaphor representing how our society is ultimately fractured by computers and their code. For example the harms of social media and the taking of artist work without permission. At least 10 […]

Visual Exploration #1

Photographic Exploration of the Mobile – Now that my ‘Balance of Power’ mobile is fully installed I can start to experiment photographically.  Over the weekend I took a number of stills and I also shot some videos.  Editing the videos will take a while longer.  In the meantime I thought I’d share some of the stills. I decided to shoot my stills using very specific camera settings.  The mobile hides many things, therefore it was important to me to try and capture an air of mystery about it.  For this reason I deliberately chose to use a very shallow ‘depth of field’.  Indeed I was actually working with an f-stop of 1.8 (A very large aperture).  What this means essentially, is that only a very narrow band of my image will actually be in focus.  These narrow bands of focus can be seen in the images below. I certainly had enough light streaming in through the windows to enable me to shoot at f-16 (the minimum aperture for my 50mm lens), however, I genuinely feel that the selective blurring adds something a little more mysterious to the images below.  I feel that the images are much more atmospheric.  I also […]

First Looks

First Footage from the ‘Balance of Power’ Mobile It feels like it has been a long journey to get to this point, but at last the mobile is up and running.  It stands around 3m tall and is by far one of the largest structures that I have ever made all by myself.  Although, I haven’t kept an hourly diary of how long the mobile has taken to complete, I know that it has taken many weeks.  At the moment the balance of the mobile is quite precarious and this is quite a threat to the project so I need to ensure that it is really secure going forward.  I already had one mishap this morning while trying to hang it up.  All of the pieces ended up on the floor, so this is far from ideal if it is to be transported then hung.  My intention is to ensure that all of the mobile elements are secured so that if the balance does tip then everything will be relatively contained. In many ways hanging the mobile is just the very start of the journey as there is so much more hidden in the whole structure.  However, I will begin […]

Nearly There

One Last Push – Today I worked solidly again on my mobile and it’s very nearly complete.  Once again the hardest part was hanging it.  I probably would have fully hung it today had it not been for wet paint on two of the rods. Below is a snapshot of the day’s activity.   Tidying the Mess Over the last few months, the manufacturer of my two mobiles has left the house looking like a bomb site!  The images below show only a part of this.       Finishing Up Below is a short video of me tidying up and adding the final touches (mosaic mirrors) to the mobile’s elements.  It was a really long day but I feel as if I’m finally nearing completion.  The mirror mosaics are not there purely for decoration.  In fact they serve an important purpose and form and integral part of the piece.  However I will reveal all shortly 🙂       Final Image Here is the final image of the day.  Although I’m really glad that the physical making side of my mobile is in sight, there is still a long way to go with regards to the digital and AI […]

Process

Another Full Day of Working – When I first began making my mobiles, I honestly hadn’t realised how much time each element would take to make.  However, I am enjoying the process and I’m looking forward to seeing the end result. Today was another full day of making.  My plan is to finish my second mobile by the end of this weekend so I can work out my next steps.  During this process I have shot a number of time-lapse videos so I thought it would be nice to add some process stills.   Process Stills
