Summary of all of My Little Wins – When I started the course, I found that gradually my artwork was being noticed. It appeared to be gaining an increasing level of traction. At first it started with a few mentions but as the months have ticked what I used to refer to as ‘My Little Wins’ seem to be getting bigger and bigger and more frequent. The Man from OFSTED – ‘Says Yeah!’ – It’s not officially confirmed yet, but we have received exciting news from OFSTED. I’m not allowed to say too much at this stage as it all needs to be formally verified, but let’s just say we received a lot of ‘outstanding’ comments about a number of key areas 🙂 We scored very highly in the area of special needs. This is something dear to my heart, as I often teach students with complex special needs such as autism, severe anxiety and ADHD. Our department welcomes these students and all of us work tirelessly to make a difference in these students’ lives. For me, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

University Invitation to Speak at the HE Research Showcase 8th May 2024 – I had another of what I refer to as my ‘Little Wins’ today. I was invited to give a talk about my MA research paper at the University of South Devon’s annual HE Research Showcase. The screening suite is a great venue and I was really excited to be involved. One of my colleagues who works in HE remembered that I had chatted to him about my research paper and that it was primarily about AI art. The focus of the talks this year were about AI, so he notified the organiser who approached me to speak. One of my ex students was in the audience, so I asked if he would shoot a few stills and videos for me. It was a great opportunity to revisit my research paper. A number of students approached me afterwards to say that they had found my participatory talk really interesting. This made my day! Artists Join Me – One of my project goals was to gather perspectives about AI generated art from a wide variety of people across the arts industries. I have already begun to ask some of my colleagues who lecture in art and design and some of my students. I was also absolutely delighted when a number of high profile artists agreed to give me quotes and share their thoughts on AI art. The Phoblographer Magazine – I feel so lucky this year because after a shaky start things seem to be looking up at last! The ‘little wins tag’ that I set up last year seems to be getting more usage which is great. I just hope that I can keep the momentum going. Images for Exhibition – In my blogpost Little Wins #7 – I was really excited to show more of my work at the Gallery Paradiso. Today I received confirmation of the images that have been chosen to appear in the forthcoming ‘Through the Lens’ photography exhibition at the Gallery Paradiso. Below are the four images that were selected. I am looking forward to seeing these images printed and framed, before I head off for the CSM low residency in London. Plastic Bag Part 1 and 2 The first two images are actually images of the inside of a plastic bag shot with a macro lens. These images were inspired by photographer Vilde Rolfeson. Flowers The second two images selected (and making up the set of four) were two flowers shot using an in-camera double exposure technique. I think that although the imagery is very different, the styles and colours actually do compliment each other. Images of the Framed Prints The images of the framed prints can be found here.

Digital Art Gets another Showing – After having my ‘Balance of Power’ mobile shown at ‘The Gallery Paradiso’– I was absolutely ‘chuffed’ to be asked for more of my work. The gallery would now like some of my digital work and also some of my photography. Normally they don’t show an artist twice but because they liked my work they decided to make an exception. I might even have to get some business cards printed. I am currently working on a selection of photographic images for them but below is one of the video pieces that has been taken for display. Echoes of Sadness This is a 5 minute digital piece from the height of my despair about AI potentially robbing me of my photography. All of the images in the sequence are mine except the last three which are AI generated. These last AI images represent the tentacles of AI and how people will eventually try to fight it. Off to a New Home – Today my mobile is off to a new home for a little while. It’s headed off to the Paradiso gallery at Bovey Tracey. Where I’ll be one of only 10 artists exhibiting there. Gutted

Win Some – Lose Some – I was so hoping that I’d be chosen for the ‘Mattering Life’ residency. Unfortunately it was not to be 🙁 I was absolutely gutted! A lot of my photographic work in the past has been very organic, so I was really hoping I was a good fit. Sadly it was a no – although the organiser did reply to me to say I was at the top of the reserve list, which was really kind. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a place might still become available, so please wish me luck. As a result of a number of rejections lately, I decided to add a category called ‘Rejection’. I’m not entirely sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing at this stage. I’m hoping that too many rejections will motivate me to work harder? Of course I might just give up, but I guess there’s always those little wins to help keep me going. However, ‘on the up side’ a local gallery has expressed an interest in my mobile. I’m so excited! Maybe today hasn’t been so disappointing after all.

Little Wins #5

Artist Reference – In order to help my students I often advise them to look at a variety of artists that may inspire them. Therefore, it’s so nice when I find myself being referenced as an artist. This is the second time now that people have sought me out on Instagram to ask for details about my work with regards to referencing it. The first time was Bromsgrove School and today I had yet another request from someone studying ‘A’ Level Photography not from my college. Some of my best contacts have come via Instagram so I’ll continue to work on my presence there.
