Is it Slowly Sinking In? –
I am trying to learn the software program Touch Designer. The reason is that I believe it will help me change my art in new ways and allow me to produce light reactive light installations. Unfortunately I have never been able to write code which I feel is a massive disadvantage. I was heartened by the book I read about Ai for my presentation. The author stated that the Chinese learned much of their early social media app programming skills by copying from Silicon Valley. This is exactly how I’m attempting to learn.
I watch tutorials and I try to understand why I am building my network nodes in the way that I’m shown by the video tutorials. Over the last week I feel that I’m gaining a little more confidence. When things don’t work I’m finding my mistakes easier to correct and I feel much less lost while navigating around the TD (Touch Designer) interface.
I’m still somewhat bemused as to why I build the nodes in the way that I’m instructed, but I’m starting to feel that the understanding of this will eventually happen. Last week I was pretty sure that this would never be the case, but after (what I consider to be) two successful outcomes I’m feeling slightly more optimistic this week.
Below is my usual time-lapse video of my journey through the tutorial that produced the following generative art piece. I liked the generated patterns so much that I decided to take some stills which I have added into a photo gallery at the end of this post. I feel there is a lot of scope to experiment further with these images and I think this project may be one that I revisit.

Below is an experimental video trying out some of the stills together with collaged images and run together as a short piece. I’ve added music to try to match the beat any rhythm of the video. This video was pure experimentation to see what kind of outcome could be produced. I’m not sure if I would like to develop this piece further, but as always I keep all of my assets as they may be useful for future projects. I’ve currently got a few ideas, but I feel it’s far too early to narrow everything down. There’s so much that I still want to explore.
Conclusion
I am really enjoying the experimental phase of what I am doing. However, I still feel a sense of urgency that time is racing ahead and I’m still not sure where I want to take everything. I do think that what I have created up to now may come in useful moving forwards. I am looking forward to the Christmas holiday period when I will be able to balance my work alongside researching what other artists have done. At the moment my work is very process based as I am exploring a variety of digital techniques. I am excited to see what other artists have been doing that are working in similar media to me.
At the moment my Chladni plate work and using my camera seems very removed from this type of work. It will be interesting to see if I can combine this work. Indeed, I would very much like to do this at some point. My explorations continues 🙂
