Back to the Drawing Board –
Unfortunately, after spending some time brainstorming, then querying ChatGPT3, I was still no further forward in developing a research question. At this point I felt that I needed to take a step away from it for a while and maybe create something instead. I had wanted to develop my Zentangle paper sculptures further so I felt this was the perfect opportunity to set aside my research paper and move back to experimentation.
It was during this period of time that I started to reflect on my study statement and exactly what it was that really interested me. Since starting my MA in Fine Art Digital I have always had an interest in how artists can harness the power of Ai instead of being replaced by it. Therefore, I decided to revisit my original study statement where I had initially proposed research into a new form of human, digital and Ai hybrid art.
Reflecting on my study statement quite quickly led on to a number of questions about what I had previously proposed. For example:
- Do people actually like Ai art?
- Do people like Digital Art?
- Do people like Digital Art more than Ai art?
- Would people even like a mix of human, digital and Ai art?
- Would people prefer a mix of digital and human art over human and Ai art?
- If people didn’t like Ai art what could make them change their minds?
- What percentage or is there a percentage of human art encompassed in Ai art would it take to make someone lose a negative bias towards Ai art?
- Is speciesism the driving force behind any negative bias behind Ai art?
- Do people react as negatively towards digital art as opposed to Ai art?
- Can sympathy and empathy sway negate negative bias against Ai art?
These are just a small sample of all of the questions that I had. What was interesting about this exercise was that I could easily generate questions about Ai art in a way I had not been able to regarding information overload. I felt that I was naturally curious about the area of Ai art whereas I needed to enlist the help of ChatGPT3 with the topic of of information overload. At last I felt that I was making some progress.
On thinking about the series of questions above the next logical step for me regarding research seems to be to find evidence of negative or positive bias for or against Ai art. The early indicators are that people have a negative bias towards Ai art, therefore exploring this further might be a good starting point.
