Title: Exploring the Role of Empathy in Mitigating Negative Bias towards AI Art: A Comparative Study of Humanoid Robots and Algorithmic Text-to-Image Generation

 

Abstract:

This research proposal aims to investigate the role of empathy in mitigating the negative bias against AI art, specifically comparing the potential of humanoid robots in eliciting empathy as opposed to simple algorithmic text-to-image generation. The proposal seeks to explore whether art created by humanoid robots is preferable to art created by Ai text to image generation. By examining the psychological factors influencing art reception and empathy, the study seeks to examine whether or not the embodiment of human-like qualities in humanoid robots can enhance emotional connections, reduce negative bias, and foster a deeper appreciation of AI-generated art.

  1. Introduction:

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed various domains, including the realm of art. Through sophisticated algorithms, AI systems can now generate art autonomously, blurring the boundaries between human and machine creativity. However, AI-generated art often faces skepticism and negative bias due to the perceived absence of human emotional depth and subjective experience. To address this challenge, researchers have explored the potential of empathy in fostering a deeper connection between viewers and AI art. Moreover, the emergence of humanoid robots as creative agents provides a captivating avenue for investigating whether their human-like appearance and interactive capabilities can elicit empathy and bridge the gap between AI-generated art and human perception.

    This research proposal aims to examine whether or not there is a role for humanoid robots in mitigating the impact of negative bias towards AI art through the lens of empathy. By investigating the potential of humanoid robots as artistic creators, I seek to explore whether their human-like qualities and interactive abilities can enhance emotional connection, foster empathy, and shape viewer perceptions of AI-generated artworks. This study will contribute to our understanding of how empathy influences art appreciation, the acceptance of AI-generated art, and the potential of humanoid robots to serve as mediators in this context.

  2. 1.1 Background:

    The rapid advancement of AI and machine learning techniques has led to the development of sophisticated algorithms capable of creating art. AI-generated art encompasses various forms, including visual art, music, and literature, and has garnered significant attention in the art world. However, the reception of AI art has been met with mixed reviews. While some appreciate the novelty and technical prowess of AI-generated artworks, others express skepticism and critique the perceived lack of human emotional expression and intention behind the creations.

    Negative bias towards AI-generated art stems from the fundamental belief that art is deeply connected to human experiences, emotions, and subjectivity. Viewers often seek a personal connection and emotional resonance when engaging with art, attributes traditionally associated with human artists. Consequently, the absence of a human creator in the AI art-making process can lead to skepticism and a perceived lack of authenticity.

    In recent years, researchers have explored the role of empathy in influencing art perception and appreciation. Empathy, defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, has been shown to play a crucial role in creating emotional connections between viewers and artworks. By empathising with the artist’s intentions, emotions, and context, viewers can develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the art.

    The use of humanoid robots as artistic agents introduces a fascinating dimension to the study of AI-generated art and empathy. Humanoid robots possess physical attributes that resemble humans, enabling them to engage with viewers in a more relatable and familiar manner. Moreover, their interactive capabilities and expressive features provide opportunities for emotional engagement and empathetic responses. By investigating the potential of humanoid robots in eliciting empathy and mitigating negative bias towards AI art, this research aims to determine whether humanoid robotic art seen through a lens of empathy is viewed as preferable to simple text to image algorithmic art.

    In this research proposal, I aim to investigate how empathy for a humanoid robot can be leveraged to reduce negative bias towards AI art, specifically by comparing the potential of humanoid robots to elicit empathy versus simple algorithmic text-to-image art generation. Humanoid robots, with their embodiment of human-like qualities, have the potential to establish a more relatable and emotionally engaging connection with human audiences. Algorithmic text-to-image generation, on the other hand, presents a different approach to AI art creation, relying solely on computational algorithms and prompts.

    To understand the implications of empathy and embodiment in the reception of AI art, I will draw upon relevant literature from various fields, including psychology, art theory, and human-computer interaction. By examining the psychological factors influencing art reception and empathy, as well as exploring the unique characteristics of humanoid robots, I aim to shed light on how empathy can be cultivated towards AI-generated art and whether humanoid robots have an advantage over algorithmic text-to-image generation in this context.

     

  3. A Comparative Study – Humanoid Robotic Art Versus Text to Image Art
    As a starting point I intend to compare audience responses to the work of Ai Da and Sophie (well known humanoid robots engaged in creating art), to well known text to image and GAN (non humanoid robotic) art including from the top left working clockwise:

Additional Information

Background information to the research paper proposal

Please see my Study Statement and also my Research Journey (to date) for additional context on the research paper proposal.  Hopefully this will provide some background to the project and why I have chosen to study humanoid robotic generated art versus simple algorithmic text to image generated art.

In my Study Statement I proposed that I wanted to test both the feasibility and design of a new kind of hybrid human, digital and ai generated art form.  During my initial research I discovered that there was a degree of negative bias surrounding text to image Ai generated art.  Therefore, if any new kind of human, digital and Ai hybrid art form is to be successful, it warrants further investigation into some of the issues surrounding it.  My paper will be an attempt to understand if there is a way of mitigating negative bias towards Ai generated art using empathetic humanoid robots.  I propose to measure the success of empathetic humanoid robots using a comparative study of humanoid robots versus simple text to image Ai art generation.
