21 Day Challenge – Day #10

Saturday 22nd July – Well today could be likened to two steps forward and 1 step backwards.  My MacBook kept kept crashing, so I had to resort to my Windows desktop.  At first I was optimistic about installing the augmented reality software on it.  Unfortunately it was half way through the install that the big, ‘disk full’ sign appeared.  At this point I knew that I could no longer put off cleaning up my desktop PC.  I found an external hard drive and cleared some disk space.  After numerous attempts I finally managed to install the required software. However still nothing ran smoothly! A combination of slow running speeds and user error, meant, that a job that should have taken around 2 hours to complete, took around 7 hours! it wasn’t all bad news though, I managed to augment 2 pages of my Barcelona Graffiti book.  I’ve still got some fine tuning to do but I’m pretty happy with the results.  As I didn’t finish till late tonight I haven’t recorded any videos but I have created the work.  My aim is to show progress maybe tomorrow if things run more smoothly.  I’m not completely disillusioned with today.  I’ve still […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #9

Friday 21st July – Today’s challenge started with a conversation with ChatGPT.  I was looking for ways of creating digital art that would work well with augmented reality.  After many conversations and frustrations ChatGPT finally came up with some interesting programs for me to try.  It did take a very long time and a lot of amended code but finally ChatGPT did ‘come good’.  Now that I have completed pretty much all of the augmented reality tutorials my main focus has to be putting into practice what I have learned so far. I’m actually quite amazed at how much I have learned while doggedly pursuing the 21 day challenge.  Each day my knowledge is building.  For me this has been a very worthwhile exercise!   What Did I Learn? Today I learned that not every day do I need to make a little video.  I’ve actually been working really hard today with ChatGPT to create some amazing generative art pieces.  It has taken a lot of time explaining my requirements and testing the resulting programs but I’m pretty happy with the way it is all going.  I am learning that you don’t actually have to be a computer ‘whiz kid’ […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #8

Thursday 20th July – Today I am feeling a little burned out with all things digital.  I spent all morning looking for ‘Touch Designer’ effects that I could incorporate into my augmented reality work.  All it did was depress me because I don’t really understand the nodal way of programming.  I keep having to tell myself that actually I’m not a coder or particularly conversant in programming.  Even the augmented reality tutorials are becoming more and more complex.   Today’s tutorial covered the various ways in which animated 3d objects can be imported.   What Did I Learn? Today I learned that it would take me weeks of training on Blender to create my own animated objects from scratch, therefore I’ve decided to use Adobe’s solution for this and use downloadable assets when required.  I learned how to import 3d animated objects.  I also learned that I’m never ever going to become a ‘Touch Designer’ whiz kid.  I learned that I need to think more creatively about how I can use the skills and knowledge that I do have, to better effect.   What Did I Actually Achieve? I managed to identify some Touch Designer training videos that hopefully will […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #7

Wednesday 19th July – I cannot believe how quickly the time is passing! It’s already day 7 and I’m now a third of the way through my 21 day challenge!  Already I’m feeling much more confident than when I first started.  As I continue to master the basics, I need to consider the type of assets I’d like to create to hide in the real world.  I also need to work out how I can fund a new MacBook!  Today my laptop drove me literally nuts!  Every time I attempted to launch something in my augmented reality software, my MacBook crashed and restarted!  I was ‘tearing my hair out’.  Luckily I did manage to understand behaviours which was the lesson for today.  This is where a particular action is assigned to an asset in the software.  In other words if you have say an image of a ball you can make make the ball spin with a tap, or it might bounce if you approach it in augmented reality space.  Below is a video of the project I made today.  When a the image in my Barcelona Graffiti book is found a small scene appears with a sun, trees and […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #6

Tuesday 18th July – Today came with a mix of both frustration and delight.  Frustration because the software I was using today, as opposed to yesterday, was in beta and continually crashed my MacBook.  I suspect that this was a combination of computer bugs plus a lack of computer resource on my side.  However, I still managed to achieve a video short and again I learned lots! Below is my creation from today.  One thing for sure I need a new computer!   A Rotatable Spaceman Appears on a Book in my Bedroom   What Did I Learn? I actually learned lots today.  I learned how to assign behaviours to make objects move in space.  This effect can be seen when the spaceman rotates.  This behaviour is initiated when the spaceman is tapped on screen. I also learned about different types of augmented reality experience placements.  Slowly but surely I am building my knowledge base.   What Did I Actually Achieve? Although my video is still very basic I managed to rotate a 3d virtual object in space that was tracked to one of my book images.  I also managed to assign a rotate command so that the spaceman turned […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #5

Monday July 17th – I felt that the tutorial today was both useful and successful.  I spent around 3 hours today working on an animated gif sequence and then importing it into Meta Spark.  It took me a while to learn how to set the plane material correctly but eventually it was successful.  Below is a video of the simple animated gif that I created.  I drew the word ‘Graffiti’ (as it’s relevant to the project) using the brush tool in Adobe Photoshop.  I then created an animated sequence and imported it into Adobe Meta Spark. Although the designs I am creating at the moment are very simple I am learning the process.  I’m really excited to start creating, but sadly I’m having to learn how to walk before I can run.  The notion of creating a hidden virtual world behind my artwork is what keeps me motivated. Having ‘nailed’ the import of an animated sequence I think has really opened doors to creative expression.  At the moment the video below is simple and not very dynamic but I’m hoping as I continue with my 21 day delve into augmented reality, soon all of this will change.   Working with […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #4

Sunday 16th July – Day 3 left me feeling mildly optimistic about the merits of pursuing Meta Spark as an augmented reality tool.  I’d had numerous unresolved problems with the patch editor with one of my projects which completely knocked my confidence.  However, today was a brand new start and I was eager to continue learning. The next video in the series was introducing the idea of 3d augmented reality text.  I think that 3d text could be a useful visual aid to any project so I decided to try it.  This instructional video proved useful because it also used the Patch editor thus giving me another opportunity to test it out. The lady in the instructional video was very good and gave clear instructions.  Therefore, I was able to very quickly produce not only 3d augmented reality text, but also animated augmented reality text. Below is a video short of what I achieved.   Augmented Reality Animated 3d Text   I was actually quite pleased with the results above, so I decided to venture out on my own to see what I could make.  I managed to animate a cube with a set material and some 3d text, but […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #3

Saturday 15th July – I entered day 3 of my challenge feeling really optimistic! But of course this was always going to be short lived!  I began my next tutorial which was significantly more complex that the last one and I duly followed along.  Indeed I followed along to the letter!  Unfortunately this wasn’t good enough and sadly my Augmented reality using the ‘Patch’ editor did not work at all!  Perhaps the greatest frustration was knowing that the software clearly had a problem but there was no way for me to check my work or contact anyone about it.  I was well and truly stuck!  However, even though I was really frustrated I had still actually learned something.  Meta Spark AR has something that they refer to as a ‘Patch’ editor.  The image below shows the Patch editor open and viewable in the software.   It was this nodal flow that would not work for me although I still haven’t found a solution.  What is great about the ‘Patch’ editor is that it works on the same principle as ‘Touch Designer’ and ‘Blender’ software.  So when I came to explore it, I found that it wasn’t quite as alien to […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #2

Friday 14th July – Day two of my challenge and I was looking forward to diving back into the Meta Spark software.  Unfortunately as I have so often come to understand, nothing is ever straight forward.  Instead of opening up the software, I was greeted with a message saying that I needed to upgrade.  It took around 10 minutes for the update to complete.  During this time I could feel myself becoming increasingly frustrated and disillusioned with computer software generally. Luckily, once the update was complete everything still worked and I was able to continue with the online tutorials.  Yesterday I had explored face tracking and today I wanted to explore ‘trackers’.  These are images programmed to be recognised by the software which in turn launch or initiate the desired augmented reality experience. Of course it couldn’t be ‘plain sailing’ could it?.  The mandatory update which had gone relatively smoothly had now caused subtle changes in the user interface.  This meant that when the online tutor said click this icon, unfortunately said icon wasn’t there. I found this really unhelpful because it was now really difficult to follow along! However, I persevered and using my new Barcelona Graffiti book as […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #1

Thursday 13th July – Today is the start of my 21 day challenge!  I have decided to focus mainly on three activities that will help with the overall aims of my project and guided by my study statement. My key areas of focus are as follows: Explore ‘The Art of the Fold’ – Bookbinding Explore augmented reality Continue Research Paper   So How did it Go? I started the day full of enthusiasm for diving into augmented reality in order to produce something really amazing!  Unfortunately both the universe and my MacBook Pro had other ideas.  I decided to start my day by exploring augmented reality with Meta Spark.  This is industry leading software and I found it to have lots of functionality.   Challenges The first challenge I faced was to free up resources on my MacBook Pro.  I reluctantly got rid of Cinema 4d which I just haven’t ever had the time or inclination to explore.  Sadly this wasn’t enough and the Meta Spark software still wouldn’t download.  So unfortunately Microsoft Excel was next on my hit list.  Luckily this gave me the space that I needed.  Already I had wasted 20 minutes simply trying to free disk […]
