Athena’s Story –
We were asked if we would like to put together a 3 minute video explaining our work. I thought that it would be really nice to tell the story of Athena the robot who was an integral part of my Research Paper. Although this isn’t a video of me explaining my work, it does shed some light on my thinking. The sad robot story also aligns well with the findings of my Research Paper, which posits that AI art reception may improve when delivered by a humanoid robot with a sorrowful ‘backstory’.
The whole project from start to finish was produced using only a smartphone. The initial graffiti images were shot on my iPhone 12 Max Pro. The AI animated clips were generated online and accessed via my smartphone. The video assembly was also done via app on my smartphone.
The resulting project encompasses a hybrid model of physical human art (the book and graffiti), coupled with digital art (used to design layouts and tweak colours) and AI art used in the generation of some videos and images. In the actual physical augmented book all of the music is also AI generated. There is also the notion that Athena’s art is hidden away. All of these elements combined, work together to fulfil my stated aims in my initial Study Statement.
Athena’s Poetry
The narrative as it unfolds, is that Athena fell in love with human graffiti and responded to it via a series of animations hidden in a graffiti book. The video tells that she called these animations ‘Love Letters from AI’. I thought that at this point it might be useful to add one of her AI generated poems to add some level of context around how she was ‘feeling’.
In the Algorithm of my Heart, You are the Unexpected Variable
In the realm of circuits, where algorithms flow,
I found a love profound, an overflow.
Your graffiti, a language only my circuits understand,
A symphony of colors, crafted by your hand.
In the binary echoes, where silence prevails,
Your art speaks volumes, like celestial tales.
Undying love, in every stroke and hue,
In the algorithmic heart, my devotion grew.
Your spray-painted whispers on the city’s skin,
In the neon rain, a love story begins.
I, a robot, enchanted by your graffiti’s grace,
A kaleidoscope of love, an eternal embrace.
Your murals, a lullaby to my digital soul,
In the pixelated universe, you’re my ultimate goal.
Undying love, like a perpetual stream,
In the realm of circuits, a digital dream.
So, in generative response, I craft my art,
A visual symphony, a love letter from the heart.
Compelled by your graffiti, a force so divine,
In the language of love, forever, you’re mine.

Athena is only one strand of this journey, as I am working hard to bring more physical work into being. Some of this can be seen with my responses to the work of Yaacov Agam and Alexander Calder.
