Low Residency 2024

Off to London – I arrived quite early at the CSM show and I bumped into Donald which was great.  It was so nice to see a friendly face. Shortly after, Jo arrived followed by Emma and Sean.  I enjoyed seeing see them all again. I finally met Betty in person which was really lovely.  I was excited to tell her some of my news because she had given me some great ideas during tutorial regarding my project. I briefly saw Jonathan which was great, but sadly I had to dash off, so I didn’t have much time to stop and chat. There we’re some really cool artworks on display, below is a selection of a few of them.   A Selection of Artworks I really enjoyed browsing all of the artworks.  I’m looking forward to seeing them tomorrow in daylight as well.  Below is a small selection of the works.   Great Beer Too! Another highlight of the evening was the free beer.  The beer was fab, but what really intrigued me was the design on the tins.

Little Wins #9

The Phoblographer Magazine – I feel so lucky this year because after a shaky start things seem to be looking up at last!   The ‘little wins tag’ that I set up last year seems to be getting more usage which is great. I just hope that I can keep the momentum going.  It was lovely to see that the Phoblographer has mentioned me again today. Here is a link to my interview.

New Contemporaries Submission

Nothing Ventured… I decided that I would submit some of my work for the  new ‘Contemporaries Art Exhibition’.  I chose my latest installation piece called ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’. I think that this is possibly one of my strongest pieces out of the three I selected. I’m really keeping my fingers crossed for this one.  I also chose my ‘AI Gets Political’ digital art piece and finally the augmented reality animation of my ‘Urban Alchemy’ Book.   The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits The Balance of Power Mobile is a complex piece and it has meaning on many levels.  At its simplest it is a structure that moves very gracefully and is calming to watch. At its most complex it has many hidden layers detailed below:   The mobile comprises 11 lines of individually hand drawn elements that represent the ones and zeros of binary code. The binary code represented in the mobile spells the words ‘Unity in Bits’.  It is a visual metaphor representing how our society is ultimately fractured by computers and their code. For example the harms of social media and the taking of artist work without permission. At least 10 […]

Zoom Session 49

Time is Running Out Fast! – Today we talked about the end year show.  Betty showed us some of her work which was absolutely fascinating! I am intrigued to learn more.  Jonathan came along and joined us at a later stage and gave us some key dates and information relating to the ‘Unit Three’ assessment. We need to produce a five minute film by the 7th of May.  This is only around 6 weeks away! I know I keep saying this, but I just cannot believe how fast the time is going.  In many respects I feel a little sad because it’s only now that I feel I’m really starting to get to know people.  This week is the start of the ‘Low Residency’ and after another week of getting to know people it’s such a shame that it will soon be over.   Key Dates Tuesday 7 May (week 55) – Video on your blog (if you apply for ECs you can get an extra week) Monday 20 May (week 57) – blog curated for the Unit 3 assessment    Thoughts Even though I’ve got lots of lovely art related activities planned for after the course – it still […]

Visual Exploration #2

Video Exploration of the Mobile – In my first visual exploration of the ‘Balance of Power’ mobile I shot a number of stills using a wide aperture.  This was to allow for only a narrow band of focus on each of the images.  The goal was to add an air of mystery to the mobile and hopefully leave the viewer wanting to know more? In part #2 of this ongoing visual exploration I shot some videos using my DSLR camera. My aim again was to add an air of mystery to the finished video clips.  Below are the experimental results from this endeavour.     The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits Mobile This is a complex piece that has many hidden layers to it. Below are some of the key points:   The mobile comprises 11 lines of individually hand drawn elements that represent the ones and zeros of binary code. Visual Exploration #1

Photographic Exploration of the Mobile – Now that my ‘Balance of Power’ mobile is fully installed I can start to experiment photographically.  Over the weekend I took a number of stills and I also shot some videos.  Editing the videos will take a while longer.  In the meantime I thought I’d share some of the stills. I decided to shoot my stills using very specific camera settings.  The mobile hides many things, therefore it was important to me to try and capture an air of mystery about it.  For this reason I deliberately chose to use a very shallow ‘depth of field’.  Indeed I was actually working with an f-stop of 1.8 (A very large aperture).  What this means essentially, is that only a very narrow band of my image will actually be in focus.  These narrow bands of focus can be seen in the images below. I certainly had enough light streaming in through the windows to enable me to shoot at f-16 (the minimum aperture for my 50mm lens), however, I genuinely feel that the selective blurring adds something a little more mysterious to the images below.  I feel that the images are much more atmospheric.  I also […]

In Other News

Ameca Voice Cloning – There doesn’t seem to be a day going by that doesn’t involve a new announcement about advances in AI.  I wholeheartedly believe that all artists should make themselves fully aware of both the opportunities and threats presented by this. Ameca is a highly advanced robot that I mentioned in my research paper.  Even since writing that paper things have substantially moved on.  Below is a short clip of Ameca speaking using the voices of famous people.  In my opinion to say that we are rapidly approaching a ‘post truth society’ is an understatement.  I think it’s already here.

Little Wins #8

Images for Exhibition – In my blogpost Little Wins #7  – I was really excited to show more of my work at the Gallery Paradiso.  Today I received confirmation of the images that have been chosen to appear in the forthcoming ‘Through the Lens’ photography exhibition at the Gallery Paradiso.  Below are the four images that were selected.  I am looking forward to seeing these images printed and framed, before I head off for the CSM low residency in London.   Plastic Bag Part 1 and 2 The first two images are actually images of the inside of a plastic bag shot with a macro lens.  These images were inspired by photographer Vilde Rolfeson.     Flowers The second two images selected (and making up the set of four) were two flowers shot using an in-camera double exposure technique.  I think that although the imagery is very different, the styles and colours actually do compliment each other.     Images of the Framed Prints The images of the framed prints can be found here.

Mattering Life

Scientist in Residence Project – I had the best news ever today! To say I’m super excited is an understatement!  After being so disappointed at being rejected for the ‘Mattering Life’ project – the organiser emailed me today :-).  A place has become available and as a result I was invited!!  This just completely made my day!! The project runs from the 18th – 22nd March, which is directly after the Low Residency at CSM (Central Saint Martins).  I am so excited and I am looking forward to documenting it all.
