First Looks

First Footage from the ‘Balance of Power’ Mobile It feels like it has been a long journey to get to this point, but at last the mobile is up and running.  It stands around 3m tall and is by far one of the largest structures that I have ever made all by myself.  Although, I haven’t kept an hourly diary of how long the mobile has taken to complete, I know that it has taken many weeks.  At the moment the balance of the mobile is quite precarious and this is quite a threat to the project so I need to ensure that it is really secure going forward.  I already had one mishap this morning while trying to hang it up.  All of the pieces ended up on the floor, so this is far from ideal if it is to be transported then hung.  My intention is to ensure that all of the mobile elements are secured so that if the balance does tip then everything will be relatively contained. In many ways hanging the mobile is just the very start of the journey as there is so much more hidden in the whole structure.  However, I will begin […]

London Visit

Van Gough Experience & Whitechapel Gallery – “To love many things is to love life, to love life is to be happy.” Yesterday I travelled to London and today while there, I had the opportunity to visit a couple of galleries. Since I became aware of its existence I always wanted to visit the Van Gough immersive experience.  It certainly did not disappoint! I actually learned a huge amount today – so much so that my childhood perception of Van Gough completely changed! Whenever Van Gough was mentioned, either at school or at art college, his persona in my mind, was one of someone who, couldn’t paint very well, went mad, chopped his ear off and then killed himself. In my adolescent mind this was probably as a result of him not being able to paint very well. Clearly my childhood view was both incredibly uniformed and naive and as I learned more about his life and works, my views began to gradually change.  However today was completely revelatory!  Van Gough reimagined for the digital age, complete with a narrative of his life was incredibly moving.  Up to this point I had also been completely unaware of his many words […]

A Mental Derive

Taking a Mindful Wander – In our ‘Zoom Session 18’ Last week we talked about the concept of ‘Derive’ or ‘taking a derive’.  I hadn’t heard of this concept before and therefore I really wanted to explore it further.  I decided that I wanted to experience both a mental and physical derive, so I have produced 2 blogs on the work resulting from my wanderings.  The results from my physical wanderings, or should I say physical derive can be found here. Each week usually on a Tuesday evening and after the weekly zoom session I produce little drawings which reflect my mood.  I used to draw them during my the zoom session but I became increasingly anxious about missing important information so it’s now solely an evening pursuit.  However, although I hadn’t realised it at the time, my little drawings were actually a form of mental derive.  Therefore I decided to use these little ‘derive drawings’ as part of a larger mental derive.   For many weeks now I have wanted to move my work into a more physical 3d realm but I wasn’t too sure how to achieve this.  Last week I had a failed attempt to produce some […]
