What is Book?
Today we had a workshop by Rosie Sherwood all about book book making. We started the session by asking the simple question ‘What is Book?’.
We discussed our answers and Rosie gave us some official definitions to throw into the mix. Below are a selection of these definitions and a slides for reference.
A Selection of Slides
A Selection of Books
Below are a selection of books from Rosie’s book art collection. Many of them were hand made and all of them were very beautiful! They gave me lots of inspiration! There’s just something inherently beautiful about handmade books. They are so tactile and it was very kind of Rosie to allow us to handle them.
Trip to the Bookarts Bookshop
After looking at the example books we headed off to the Bookarts Bookshop near the Old Street tube station. It was 2 stops on the Northern Line from Kings Cross. Even though it was a tiny shop it was filled to the brim with all kinds of books with many limited edition of handmade. It was an absolute gem! I could have spent all day there, but we needed to grab lunch and head back for our afternoon workshop. I’d love to go back some time.
Interesting Door Feature
As well as the wealth of books the Bookart Bookstore also had a very interesting feature as part of its door. I’d love to know what it is and if there’s a story behind it.
???
As an aside, I’m not sure exactly what was happening across the road from the bookstore. It seemed that some poor bloke was either locked out of his house, or waiting for someone or something. However I was particularly taken with his fluffy pink dressing gown and matching mules.
Lunch
Lunch definitely tasted better than it looked. I had coconut chicken curry. It was nice to grab some lunch with Shirin, Jo, Sean, Emma and Margot. As we were running a little late Shirin called an Uber. This was actually my first ever time in an Uber and my seatbelt didn’t work lol. Thanks to Shirin’s quick thinking, we were only 20 mins late for the start of the workshop. I reckon it would have been a lot worse if we had taken the tube.
The Workshop
As I was writing this blog I was away from home and I didn’t have access to my models from the workshop, so I had to wait till I returned home to access them. Therefore the additional section to this blogpost can be found in the Book Making Workshop.
