Weekend of Work

Moving on to Prototype #3 – Now that the physical side of my first prototype is finished, I am beginning work on a more refined and larger version.  The design is more robust and I’ve added eyelets to add strength to the cardboard whilst hanging.     One of the issues I faced was ensuring that all of the code was on a level and could be read as an actual line of binary.  After numerous attempts I realised that the quickest and easiest way to do it was to change my arrangements of keyrings and clips.  This worked out to be a pretty effective way to balance everything out.

Little Wins #6

Off to a New Home – Today my mobile is off to a new home for a little while. It’s headed off to the Paradiso gallery at Bovey Tracey. Where I’ll be one of only 10 artists exhibiting there.       The Exhibition Below is a copy of the official flyer for the show.     Mobile in situ Below is a short video of the mobile in situ.

Gutted

Win Some – Lose Some – I was so hoping that I’d be chosen for the ‘Mattering Life’ residency.  Unfortunately it was not to be 🙁 I was absolutely gutted!  A lot of my photographic work in the past has been very organic, so I was really hoping I was a good fit.  Sadly it was a no – although the organiser did reply to me to say I was at the top of the reserve list, which was really kind.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a place might still become available, so please wish me luck. As a result of a number of rejections lately, I decided to add a category called ‘Rejection’.  I’m not entirely sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing at this stage.  I’m hoping that too many rejections will motivate me to work harder? Of course I might just give up, but I guess there’s always those little wins to help keep me going. However, ‘on the up side’ a local gallery has expressed an interest in my mobile.  I’m so excited! Maybe today hasn’t been so disappointing after all.

Keep it Moving

Small Steps – Big Changes. I had to write yesterday off almost completely as I had so many non MA activities to complete.  These duties ranged from setting up a new phone for a family member, to composing and posting an important letter.  However, today was much more productive. I managed to test my concept and augment a number of my mobile elements.   Early indicators suggest that ‘all things going well’ – I should be able to realise my vision.  My greatest fear was that the mobile wouldn’t augment very well.  I also worried that the elements were too close together, and as such would interfere with one another when augmenting.  It appears that as long as the user/viewer is careful then each item should augment separately.  Up to this point it has been a bit of a risk.  Today the concept however was tested and seems to work. Athena the robot continues to 3d print but this activity is also not without risk.  Jamie (my collaboration partner’s) 3d printer isn’t always consistent and parts often become loose from the 3d printer bed.  This ultimately leads to print failures which is slowing down the project. On a more positive […]

Athena

Athena the Robot – I decided that I couldn’t launch into my final major project without Athena my robot from Unit 2.  As my work now involves looking at Art from the perspective of a computer or robot, I felt I needed some form of robotic representation in my my final piece. I have made a conscious decision not to use text to image AI art in my work.  Therefore, it was important to have Athena come to life in a very physical way.  Working with 3d printable files from the PIB project. I am collaborating with Jamie Easton to produce my very own 3d printed robot ‘Athena’.

Mini Mobile

A Day of Mini Mobile Making – In order to help add some weight to my intended proposal for college, I felt I needed to produce something to scale. Today I had a really enjoyable session making some mobile elements with my mum to produce a mini mobile.  She was chief cardboard cutter and sticker and I was designer in chief.  Between us we managed to produce 16 small mobile units (i.e. pieces for the mobile). Below is a time-lapse video of my activity.  The main reason for producing a smaller scale mobile was to decide exactly how I would like to string/hang the larger version.  I have been really struggling with the concept of actually hanging my mobile.  For example do I take an Alexander Calder approach and have the pieces more rigidly fixed? Or do I suspend them so they are more free to move, or, do I opt for a mix of both? I felt that the only way to answer these questions was to actually make a small prototype.  I also decided in the interest of speed, I would only use circles as they were easier to cut.  The suspended shapes didn’t really matter, for me […]

Epic Making Session

Yaacov Agam Inspired Work – Over many months now I have been wrestling with a myriad of ideas.  In my Study Statement I was keen to develop a new form of hybrid human, digital and AI art.  I also wanted to include an element of mystery and discovery whereby elements of the work were hidden. During my search for inspiration I came across two artists that particularly resonated with me, namely:  Alexander Calder and Yaacov Agam.  I particularly liked the idea of movement and mobile art seen in Calder’s work.  Indeed I was so taken with his work that I went to visit the Tate Modern to see some of his pieces there. However, Yaacov Agam’s work really did inspire me.  In his Artist’s statement he says: “My aim is to show the visible in a perpetual state of becoming”. I think this is a beautiful way in which he describes his work. However, I personally would liken it to, showing the visible in a perpetual state of change. Given the nature of the subject matter that I’m exploring, his work for me very much aligns with this notion of change as well as ‘becoming’.   Below is a short […]

Mental Derive Part #3

Made with a Mobile – As the deadline to Unit 2 rapidly approaches I’m aware that I really need to be pulling together all of my ideas.  I have been trying to build a number of skills lately and it’s been quite a steep learning curve. I’ve explored augmented reality through my 21 day challenge.  I’ve explored projection mapping, physical book printing and 3d paper sculpture via my Grotto Print.  I’ve also explored drawing which appeared on my mobile 3d kinetic art piece. However, today I managed to return to my first love that is photography.  This afternoon I decided to make two short films showing the beautiful motion created by my mobile.   The background to this particular mobile piece can be found in ‘Mental Derive’ Part #1 and ‘Mental Derive’ Part #2. I deliberately shot both short videos using a very wide aperture as I wanted to add depth to my film.  I wanted to see the patterns on the mobile slowly come in and out of focus as they gently glide backwards and forwards.  I think that I managed to do this.  Please see below for the two videos created today.   Kinetic Art with a Mobile […]

Grotto Print Ideas #2

Adding Value – I quite like the idea of ‘Killing Time’ and the oil on water re-imagined clocks. However, I do feel that there needs to be some level of interactivity with my Grotto print. I decided that since posting the video short included in the Grotto Print Ideas blog, more of the clocks needed to be shown.  This is pure experimentation and the full video can be seen below. A couple of years ago I began to explore Paul’s book.  I felt that the nature of the folds created within would lend themselves very well to warping the clock faces and dials even further.   Killing Time – Calming Edit   As well as the calming edit, I also produced a shorter more rousing video short, showing the clocks animated as they warp and destruct.  This is more in keeping with the idea of ‘Killing Time’.     I’m debating whether or not to include these either one or both of these digital edits as part of the print sale? At this point in time it is just a thought.  I’ve a long long way to go before I make a firm decision. I’ve also had another idea regarding […]

A Mental Derive Part #2

Picking Up Where I Left off – Ever since my first mental derive, it was always my intention to recommence this particular project.  now that the second draft of my research paper is nearing completion, I feel I am better able to return more fully to creative activities. Since part one of my mental derive, I didn’t totally abandon this project and I experimented with suspending some of the circles on a sheet of acetate between some thick heavy duty white elastic. Below is a gallery showing the results. This is a project I’d like to return to at some point,  but I don’t currently have the correct materials.  The acetate was far too thin and buckled under the strain of the elastic.  Therefore thicker acrylic is possibly a better choice.  The patterned discs/circles also had a habit of ‘pinging off’, so a better method of securing them is required.  However, I do think that there is room to develop this project further.     Moments in Time and Space Each black and white patterned circle/disc above, is a collage of many little moments in time.  For this reason I wanted to trial another form of suspension.  I am particularly […]
