Zoom Session 40

The Last Session of the Year – I cannot believe how quickly the time has flown over. We are already two thirds off the way through our course, and I can’t believe there’s only 20 weeks left! We had a critique/affirmative feedback session to round off the end of this term’s last Zoom session. I felt this was a really nice way to end the term as I was really excited to see how everyone had got on with their 3 minute videos. My group included: Donald, Ellie, Delphina, Shirin, Jason and Sue. There were quite a few others, but my memory is terrible at the moment, so many apologies to everyone that I missed. We watched presentations from: Shirin, Jason, Ellie and Delphina – all of the videos were totally unique, and it was lovely to see such a diverse range of talent! Sadly, as I am moving through the course I’m now not sure if I will be able to maintain my weekly Zentangle drawings. Zoom Session 39

AI and (3 Minute Video) Affirmative Feedback – I cannot believe that this is the penultimate zoom session of this year! I was really excited today because my three minute video was used as a test for the start of the crit sessions. I was really pleased with the comments because I can now use these to help inform my work going forward. I was quite nervous at how my video would be received, but I think on the whole, judging by the comments, it wasn’t so bad 🙂 As an extra form of feedback called ‘Affirmative Feedback’, everyone was asked to respond to the sentence: “What worked for me is…” The other respondents were then invited to agree or disagree with this by giving a thumbs up on the recorded session from today. I am including a link to this week’s video as peoples’ comments and reactions will again be useful in helping to inform my work going forward. Zoom Session 38

Different Strokes – Today was both an interesting and fun session. It helped to highlight just how differently people can perceive the same image. We played a game whereby one person in the group was shown an image. The person who was given the image was then asked to write a short summary or description about the image of around seven words or so. They then had to choose another member of the group who had to respond to their initial description, but in opposite terms. For example if something was classed as white, then the next member would respond as say black. However, the next member was ONLY allowed to see the words and NOT the original image. After writing down their opposite responses, they then had to chose another member from the group and this member had to respond in the positive and choose another member to comment and so on. The end result was one person having seen the image and team members responding positively then negatively in turn to the words they saw before them. Systematic Analysis of Artworks – This week was a particularly useful week for me because I’ve often wondered about finding a useful strategy for analysing artworks etc. Today we were introduced to Gillian Rose’s ‘Critical Visual Methodology. We also spoke about the production of a 3 minute video which could be used to help with critical analysis among the group. I decided to produce my 3 minute video in response to my research work, therefore it involves a robot with a sad story. Zoom Session 36

Group Critique #2 – Today we had another group critique session. This week I was in a group with Sean, Jason, Yaya, Bea and Betty. It was a really interesting session and wonderful to see the diverse range of work being produced. Everyone was really kind about my work which was great! Unfortunately, I’m my own worse critic and I did exactly what I tell my own students not to do. I often say to them, never feel intimidated by anyones highlights. However, with the level of beautiful work being created it is really hard not to. Sean talked through his drawings. These are really coming together now and he has a very interesting concept. His own painting style is also starting to shine through. I’m excited to see his comic book! Jason had produced an intriguing animation. The thought, creativity and time it must have taken to create was amazing! Like Yaya mentioned, I would also love one of his animated characters. Yaya had been creating a series of really delicate Murano glass sculptures, which will form part of a hanging piece. Zoom Session 35

Group Critique #1 – Today we had our first group critique ‘crit’. I was in a group with Donald, Ellie, Sean and Shirin. It was really great to see how everyone was getting on. Sean spoke about his paintings, Ellie showed some images of her sculptures and Shirin showed her large painting about Utopia. To see everyone working so well with physical materials was great and it has only strengthened my resolve to edge closer to physicality. I had some nice feedback. Ellie definitely ‘hit the nail on the head’ when it came to understanding my thinking. The MACBA Metamorphosis work is all about giving recognition to the graffiti artists of Barcelona. It’s about placing them into one of Barcelona’s most prestigious art galleries where they too can have a voice. It’s about disrupting the average of that museum and filling it with something that may never appear there. Ellie also recommended the work of Peter Fluck as he had made some interesting mobiles. I am particularly fascinated by mobiles at the moment so any ideas are very welcome. Shirin felt it would have been nice if there was perhaps some of my own drawings as part of the project. […]

Zoom Session 34

Where Do Ideas Originate? – This week we talked about the origin of our ideas. We split into groups and discussed where we felt our ideas originated. In our group we had quite an interesting discussion. When we returned to the main group the conversation became even deeper to encompass concepts such as the divine and spirituality. One of our group members told us about being baptised in the river Jordan and explained what a life affirming event this had been. It’s great to hear of these experiences. For someone brought up in the Christian faith, to be baptised at the same place as Jesus must have been truly amazing! We also discussed the Dunning-Kruger effect. Essentially this is where someone naively thinks that they know more about a topic than they actually do. It could be described as being at ‘Peak Stupid’. Hopefully as they begin to learn more, they drop down from ‘Peak Stupid’ into ‘The Valley of Despair’. At this point they gradually rise from ‘The Valley of Despair’ as they gain more knowledge and become more masterful at their subject. Zoom Session 32

More Grotto Print Info and William Kentridge Discussion – This week we looked at some printing practicalities with regards to the Grotto print. I could not for the life of me remember where to find the colour profiles in Photoshop, but luckily Jonathan had the program open and demonstrated. I’m quite excited about the print project. Ideally I’d love to make a physical print but with my current workload sadly it will have to be digital. Although I am thinking hard about ways I can make it more interesting. I felt quite tired this week. I’ve been wracking my brain non stop about where I want to take my work and then we took a brief look at William Kentridge. I have to admit I hadn’t come across him before, but I really liked the way in which he narrated his work. I think this could prove very useful for my own future work. I’m looking forward to further discussions on his work next week as we didn’t manage to cover everything this week. Below are a selection of slides from today. Zoom Session 31

Beginning of a New Academic Year – Today was our first day back and it was so lovely to see everyone again! However, there was some sad news as it looks as if we are losing 4 of our fellow students due to the cost of living crisis. This makes me so sad and angry, because education to me is the sign of a healthy society. I myself have lost so many fantastic students because of lack of funding. I recall one student in particular who so wanted to work in the design industry. She worked incredibly hard to pass her exam, and despite all the odds (multiple learning difficulties) she achieved it! Sadly she couldn’t continue though, due to lack of funding. When I found that she wasn’t returning I was actually heartbroken because I knew how hard she had tried – why? – because as her teacher, I was with her every step of her artistic journey. She told me her dreams for the future as a fashion designer and how much she wanted to pass her exam. This was so that she could progress onto the next level.
