Emerging Dialogues Through the Positioning of Textile and Visual Arrangements –
I would really love to visit the college more often to do many of the workshops on offer. I often find myself thinking, if only I had my time over again? Therefore, whenever I get the opportunity to participate in any kind of workshop, be it online, or face to face, I’m always really excited. This week was certainly no exception! For a long time now I have been working both photographically and digitally in the flat 2d world of screens. However this week it was all change. Sukie Sagoo-Reddy ran a thought provoking/food for thought workshop with us today.
She took us through her Powerpoint presentation that was packed with both information and tasks for us to complete. As usual I screen shot some of her slides as I find this a useful way of storing information for future reference. I think that I will definitely be revisiting this. Alongside Jonathan’s zoom session about the concept of a derive and the Processing Programming workshop, Sukie’s workshop also has to be one of my favourites to date. I don’t think that I’m particularly good at 3d but I am really trying, and I found the session to be very welcoming and encouraging.
We started off thinking about narratives and we were tasked with finding two images (one textile based and one photographic) that we could juxtaposition in order to weave a story. Below are the two images that I placed together. I’m not quite sure what the story might be, but these weren’t my first choice images. Unfortunately a technical error meant that I couldn’t have the images that I really wanted so these were the only two accessible ones. I didn’t think that they looked so bad together?
We used a Padlett to upload our work and this was a great system because it allowed everyone to comment on each other’s work. From there we continued with Sukie’s PowerPoint presentation. Below are a selection of her slides and these include references to a variety of interesting artists.

Experiments
Below are some of the images that I created from the session. I found the session really challenging (in a very good way) because working quickly in 3d is typically right outside of my comfort zone. Most of the images below were responding to the theme ‘Chasing Shadows’ and the ones containing material were responding to the theme ‘Emergence’. I wasn’t so happy with the material pieces, so I’ve only included larger photographs of the ‘Chasing Shadows’ theme.
Food for Thought
I left the session feeling as if this is definitely something that I would like to try again very soon.
