Gallery Visits & Last Day –
Sadly today was the last day of the Low Residency. I headed off to the first venue with Andy (my husband). Our first visit was the ‘Studio Voltaire’. We all arrived around 10.00am.
We were greeted by two ladies who explained a little about the history of the gallery, the types of residencies available plus the kind of works/artists that were typically supported.
The Rebirthing Room – Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley
Below is some information and a short video except from the ‘Rebirthing Room’ installation by Danielle Braithwaite-Shirley. This installation was the first of two that we saw housed at the Studio Voltaire.

Far From the Start – Jay Bernard
The second work at the gallery was a sound installation by Jay Bernard. Please see below for more information.

Corvi-Mora
The second galley on our tour was the Covri-Mora, where we visited works by Maiko Tstutsumi.
This was an incredibly calming experience. I’m not sure if Maiko had specially chosen this gallery to house her work but I felt it was the perfect space. I would describe, Maiko’s work as very minimalist, calming, beautiful and very considered.
Information and Floor Plan
Below is some information about Maiko and her work, including a floor plan.
Before reaching Maiko’s work we needed to navigate a long corridor and a set of steps. I found the natural light in this gallery to be particularly beautiful. I was also intrigued by the texture on a small set of steps leading to the gallery space. Below is a selection of images of the steps leading to Maiko’s exhibition.

Beautiful Light
I was so struck by the beautiful light both inside and outside of the Covri-Mora gallery that’s I decided to take a few shots. Below is a selection of the images.
Light Painting Imagery (Upstairs)
Below is some information (including some stills of her work) about ‘Music Swims Back to Me’ by Jennifer Bornstein.
The Gasworks
Our third gallery visit was to the Gasworks Gallery. Below are a few images exterior images.
When we arrived at the Gasworks we were greeted by two ladies who gave us lots of information about the gallery and the current installation.
Holes – Anna Perach
Below is a selection of images from the Anna Perach installation.
The Chisenhale Gallery
The Chisenhale Gallery was the fourth gallery on our tour. Below are some images from both inside and outside of the gallery including images from the exhibition. We were greeted at this exhibition by a young man who talked with much passion about the sound installation. Indeed without exception it was clear that every curator/tour guide was absolutely passionate about their gallery and the artists showing there. For me this really added to the enjoyment of each visit.
Interior and Exterior Gallery Images
The Chisenhale Gallery is incredibly atmospheric! It was a beautiful space to play the sound installation. It is a very poignant place and it’s story echoes this. As with all of the galleries in this blog the respective gallery links have been added so that further information can be accessed. Of particular note are the two letters on the windows of the building. More information about this can be found on the Chisenhale Gallery Website.
Additional Information
As the installation was primarily sound focused the walls were bare, except for one wall which contained more information. Below are images of the information frames.
The Whitechapel Gallery
By the time I arrived at the Whitechapel Gallery I was exhausted. So I decided to focus on the works that particularly grabbed my attention. I found the following participatory textile work very striking.
While wandering around the gallery I came across a number of very simple ceramic pieces set against the windows of the gallery. I found these particularly beautiful because of the fading light. Therefore I decided to shoot a number of images sadly I don’t know who made these but they made lovely subjects.
Miscellaneous
As we were heading towards the Chisenhale Gallery I came across some graffiti. I like graffiti and street art so I thought I’d just drop in a couple of images here to wrap up.
