Ideas Part 4

Research Notes, Ideas and Links – Since the beginning of my MA, I have been compiling an extensive list of material to help with idea generation. Here is part one, part two and part three compiled from previous units.  Following is a body of interesting resources collected throughout Unit 3.   Ideas Part 4 Interesting colour tubes with dyes and stuff: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3ijlsNsc56/?igsh=a3VhZ2R0Nms0emI0 Making a butterfly mobile: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5D1N6kJLG0/?igsh=MXRqamxhN3pxcHI5Ng== Grow your own plastic using glycerin: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4V2dxCoJzc/?igsh=MXA2dmY3Y2w1MWU4cQ== Sorting out eyes in Photoshop: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5OW3_KygZm/?igsh=dzJwOXp3bDJ2bXFr Very neat handcrafted book: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4_N7hltg2l/?igsh=MTFkcWFvbmhtNmNlYg== Beautiful sunbeam art – sunbeams causing water in a pot to vibrate – very creative: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5RBg-GOxUE/?igsh=MXIzaWEyOGlpNXl3bg== New App to create barrier grid art: https://kinegram.app Barrier grid app at GitHub: GitHub – jthawme/kinegram: A site to generate barrier grid animations Barrier grid combined with images: Qosmo AI-Generated Barrier-Grid Animation New Year’s Card 2024 — Creating New Year’s Card using AI (ControlNet) and Barrier-Grid Animations | by Naoki Ise | Qosmo Lab | Medium ******Supercool installation using sand to keep the installation going: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2hwsXZByMn/?igsh=ZHlqa28yeHl5ZGdr Making plastic out of gelatin: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5OYkjir2u6/?igsh=MXNncGpjNGVrbXk1OQ== *******Supercool projection mapping of poppies: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5RESQHNbZO/?igsh=OXZheHQ4NmR4Z3Zk Pretty smart morphing sculpture depending on which angle you view it: https://www.threads.net/@raminnasibov/post/C5TKslXNuNc/?xmt=AQGzLPs9RXBwT0z0fwdtGbBZok1Qc54UTtS2ONr_l8SEfw *******Supercool droste effect with a piece of paper and projection […]

Film Mark 2

Exploring Alternatives – In my Film Production blog, I talked about how unhappy I was with my first film.  Things haven’t got any easier.  I still feel very poorly, but the perfectionist in me is not prepared to let this go.  I absolutely ‘hate’ the first version of my film now!  Unfortunately, I just seem to have such a severe creative block at the moment.  One of the greatest challenges I faced was trying to come up with yet another script!  At one point I thought ‘oh stuff it’ I’ll just stick with what I’ve done.  However I just couldn’t do that. I went to bed feeling pretty ill and pretty down. They say that sometimes when you are facing a problem, your brain will help you to work things out while you are asleep. Last week in my state of feeling so down ‘my brain, my subconscious the universe, god’ or call it what you like came to the rescue overnight while asleep! This morning I remembered something that I’d long been aware of yet forgotten.  This was the old concept of ‘The Eighth Day’. In some theological interpretations, the “Eighth Day” symbolises the day of resurrection or the […]

Film Ideas

Five Minute Film Ideas Generation – I have to admit that working out what I wanted to do for my five minute film has not been easy.  I had a number of ideas whirring around in my head.  These included:   A simple narrative of my practice and how it has evolved A showcase of my work without any narrative A narrative about what I would do if someone took away my camera A narrative about my mobile and how it has evolved An ‘arty’ film full of visual metaphors An animated film A five minute promo for my mobile with a commercial slant to it   For a number of weeks I have been wrestling with all of these concepts trying to work out which one to pursue.  I ran through a number of the films created last year.  I particularly admire the films by Lauryna Narkeviciute and George Harvey.  I found George’s work incredibly powerful and moving. Lauryna’s cool black aesthetic also fascianted me.  I think with George’s work it was his professionalism, creativity and meticulous attention to detail that I found most inspiring.  Unfortunately I had never really taken my photographic skills into film making.  I do […]

The Concept

Hidden Depths – I have decided to call my mobile ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’.  My mobile represents a ‘balance’ of power play between the major players in the AI art generation industries, versus the millions of voiceless, hidden artists who had their images used (often without permission) to feed machine learning algorithms.  The mobile is based on binary code and the lines of code spell out the words ‘Unity in Bits’. Why ‘Unity in Bits’? This is an ambiguous play on words.  The rise of the digital age coupled with social media and AI has led to a fragmentation of our society – namely, our ‘unity in bits’.  For example we have divided communities, surveillance capitalism and lack of free speech.  However, I hope that through interaction with my mobile ‘unity can be found in bits’ only this time ‘bits’ refers to the ‘bits’ and ‘bytes’ of binary code. My mobile project poses the question can that which has sought to divide us, actually bring us closer together?

Mobile Designs

Getting the Timings Right – Having reversed the concept of how humans perceive AI art, to how computers perceive images, I decided to consider potential designs. At this stage I am still thinking in terms of a large mobile.  However, I would like to base the mobile’s design on binary code.  The binary code will conceal a hidden message relevant to my overall project. Using binary code might at first appear to be a superficial idea, but actually the concept goes much much deeper.   Early Experimentation In my early experimentation I used a circle to represent the zeros and I cut out holes in the ones.  I am not convinced that this works particularly well and it is extremely time consuming! Below is an image of some of the prototypes I made.     Further Experimentation I felt the above prototypes were quite bland, probably wouldn’t move very well and didn’t leave a much surface area for designs. I decided that an oval shape was much better than a circle for representing the zeros.  I used layers of recycled cardboard and recycled printer paper along with some of my own black and white designs. I think that the second […]

Stacking Cardboard

Ducks in a Row – It’s Christmas Eve and surprisingly this year I am ahead of schedule with wrapping presents etc.  Therefore, I decided to start getting my ducks in a row so that I have everything ready to begin Unit 3. One of my goals is to create a huge mobile. Initially I would like to make it from cardboard boxes recycled from items bought for our house.  So, today I finally began flattening it all out and storing it upright to keep it in good shape.  I’m hoping that this is the start of something interesting.     New Videos Following my feedback I also decided to catch up on my Zentangle drawings.  I wanted to do this because I think hand drawing is something I’d like to incorporate into my work. I also decided that any AI that I would use would be for animation purposes  only. Therefore, I took three of my most recent black and white hand drawn then digitised creations and animated them using AI. The results seem to have a very organic feel. I was fairly happy with the results.  I introduced a digitised Polaroid frame around the videos to both add interest […]

Mobile Making Ideas

All Things Mobile – Based on all of my research and work from Unit 2, I decided that I would like to investigate the production of a giant mobile. I’m setting up this blog post as a place to record all of my thoughts and initial ideas.   I intend to make some mind-mapping notes.  However, as an early investigation I’ve already made a tentative start.  I asked AI using text prompts to visualise my thoughts and ideas.  All of the ideas below are mine but expressed using text to image generation.  I quite like some of these early iterations.   Paper Sculpted Mobiles The paper sculpted mobiles were generated by the simple prompt: ‘A large mobile made from paper suspended from a ceiling’.  I think that if any of these were actually constructed then it would be pretty impressive.     Mobiles with a Circular Theme The following set of four mobiles were just continued generations of the original prompt above.  The software began to generate circles which is quite interesting.  Circles had been my initial shape of choice.     Binary Code Inspired Mobiles At this point I changed my prompt to incorporate the words ‘binary code’ because […]
