Open Evening

Balance of Power – First Showing Tonight was a special night for me because it was the first showing of my prototype mobile called ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’. I felt so lucky to be showing at ‘The Gallery Paradiso’. It all came about when a friend of mine called Sue (an excellent photographer currently studying for her own MA) suggested that the call out for ‘Line and Form’ artworks would be a good fit with my mobile because of its lines of binary code. I was very interested, and luckily the following week Sue showed a video of my mobile to the curator who said he loved it! Following on from that we had a quick phone call and I delivered the piece the following Saturday. There were some beautiful artworks being shown and I felt quite honoured to be a part of it all. People really seemed to like the concept of binary code. They thought that the hidden words (Unity in Bits) built into the lines of code was quite a ‘cool’ idea. London Visit

Van Gough Experience & Whitechapel Gallery – “To love many things is to love life, to love life is to be happy.” Yesterday I travelled to London and today while there, I had the opportunity to visit a couple of galleries. Since I became aware of its existence I always wanted to visit the Van Gough immersive experience. It certainly did not disappoint! I actually learned a huge amount today – so much so that my childhood perception of Van Gough completely changed! Whenever Van Gough was mentioned, either at school or at art college, his persona in my mind, was one of someone who, couldn’t paint very well, went mad, chopped his ear off and then killed himself. In my adolescent mind this was probably as a result of him not being able to paint very well. Clearly my childhood view was both incredibly uniformed and naive and as I learned more about his life and works, my views began to gradually change. However today was completely revelatory! Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya – While I was visiting the Banksy Gallery one of the guides told me that I really needed to visit ‘Museu National d’Art de Catalunya.’ He explained that this was an amazing gallery and a ‘must see’. He was not wrong! The museum is set high above Barcelona and the views are breathtaking! Luckily I had my DSLR with me on this trip, so I decided to take lots of photos. My memory card was pretty full so I had to be a little careful about wasting frames but I managed to shoot everything I wanted. The building is very imposing! In fact everything about it was imposing, including the security and guards. After a relaxed and friendly visit to both the Banksy (they actually made me a coffee), and the MOCA and MACBA museums, I was left in no doubt that one false move and I’d be in serious trouble. Banksy Museum

From Start to Finish – Just Superb! – On my way back from visiting the MACBA I started to walk in the direction of the Picasso Museum. It had been my intention to visit this museum because as a young art student I had been to a London exhibition of Picasso’s sketchbooks. I have always admired Picasso’s technical drawing skills and creativity, so visiting the Picasso museum made sense to me. However as I stopped to look at Google Maps in order to orientate myself I just happened to glance at the building to my right. There was a relatively (could have easily missed) small sign for the Banksy Museum. I wandered in to see if this museum was taking part in the ‘International Museum Day’ that I had just taken advantage of at the MACBA. The staff at the reception desk said that as it was a private museum then admission wasn’t free. I asked if there was any student discount and duly pulled out my UAL student card. Barcelona Trip

Time to Unwind and Return To Blogging – The last 3 weeks have been incredibly busy. At work this is the time when we are preparing students for their art exams. However, for me the biggest task and time consuming activity is the production of the end of year film. There are more details about this in the blog post ‘A Temporary Distraction’. I always enjoy seeing the wide variety of work produced by our students but assembling it all into a coherent narrative can often be quite challenging. After nearly completing the film, luckily I was able to take a break in Barcelona. My students were now on a reading week, so it was the perfect opportunity to get away. This blog is a record from the start of the trip in England, to the return journey and most importantly everything in between. Zoom Session 19 (Low Residency)

Low Residency Part 1 – This week there wasn’t a formal zoom meeting due to preparations for both the Interim show and the Low Residency. There won’t be a formal zoom session next week either as this will be right in the middle of the Low Residency. For this reason I have decided to dedicate both zoom session slots to documenting both the Interim Show and the Low Residency. Part 1 will cover the Interim show Private View and Low Residency activities covering Thursday 9th March until Sunday 12th March. I will cover Part 2 next week from Monday 13th March until Thursday 16th of March. The Interim Show (Thursday 9th March – 6.00pm-9.00pm) I was really excited to be travelling to the Low Residency in London. I’m not the most confident of travellers, so I was lucky to have my husband accompany me. We left my car at Paignton boarded the train and headed off to our change at Newton Abbot railway station. Day Job

End of Year Exhibition – Response to Experience- Like many of my fellow CSM Fine Art Digital students, I am also working while studying. I am currently a lecturer in both Photography and Art and Design across a variety of levels. This year (it varies), I am currently teaching on the Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design and also Foundation Art. In previous years I have taught Level 1 Photography and Animation, ‘A’ level Photography and the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design. I really enjoy teaching. To me, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing my students achieve their artistic dreams. Over the years I gained the unofficial role of producing our end of year video. This showcases some of the student work undertaken throughout the year. We have our own gallery space which gives a great opportunity to display lots of work and larger installations. This year we decided to make a video that also showcased our end of year Christmas exhibition titled ‘Response to Experience’. London Part 2

A City of Culture – I’ve visited London on numerous occasions but this time was different because it was with the specific aim of visiting art galleries and museums. My visit to the capital last week was a business trip. This week I was helping my colleagues to escort 30 students around a number of museums and galleries. Following is an account of my time there. I have also documented some of the most amazing artworks at a number of leading galleries. Day 1 Our first day was spent travelling. Just like last week I travelled from Paignton to Paddington with one change at Newton Abbot. However it very nearly didn’t happen because a train broke down near Paignton. This meant that we were almost an hour late. Therefore we had to get a later train from Newton Abbot to Paddington. Sadly because of the delay we lost about 2 hours and arrived around 9.00pm instead of 7.00pm. Above is the view from my hotel room window. Newcastle 2022

Northern Culture and the Laing Art Gallery – Newcastle is one of my favourite cities. I was born in County Durham only around 30 miles from the city. It was a real treat to go to Newcastle with friends. The nightlife as a teenager was fantastic! It is also true what they say about Northern women. They actually do come out and queue for a nightclub in the skimpiest of club wear in sub zero temperatures. They really aren’t bothered by these freezing temperatures either. As a Northern woman myself, I actually know about this phenomenon, having once been part of this weekend ritual myself. Apparently psychologists have tried to analyse this behaviour. However, the simple fact is that if you wear a coat you need to carry it with you throughout the night. It is either that or pay a cloakroom fee. This involves either parting with cash and/or facing long cloakroom queues. Hence lots of women preferring to stand queuing outside in the cold with very little attire. It really is that simple.
