The Robots Are Here

Doom and Gloom or Hybrid Art Opportunity? – Love it or hate it – the robots are here!  Below is a selection of robots generated as a visual experiment.  No two robots are the same.  Each one has its own unique character.  They are all bringing balloons as a gift.  There are seventy of them in total, although more were generated.  They are all a by product of my research paper.  They were fun to generate and I’ll just leave them here.

Deeper Meaning

How to Find Meaning? – Having recently finished 21 days of an augmented reality investigation followed by another 21 days of research paper investigation and compilation, I’m feeling somewhat down.  I think that primarily it is due to my investigations into AI generated art.  The further I dig into this, the more depressed I become.  I’m sure this is just a transient phase.  Why am I so sad?  It’s because over the years I learnt so much about photography.  I collected a wealth of knowledge on this subject especially because each year I tried to present my students with increasingly technically challenging workshops.  I was proud that I was able to replicate pretty much any style of photography from slow shutter work to speed shooting, star trails to zoom burst, macro photography to physiograms. I felt I had reached the pinnacle when I managed to work out the technique that Michael Jackson (the photographer not the pop singer), uses to make his ethereal Luminograms.  Even today colleagues are badgering me to give up that secret which I flatly refuse.  It’s so beautifully simple yet complex at the same time and I nailed it! However, with the advent of AI art […]

Research Paper Journey #5

Robots Do Not Think? – After speaking with my supervisor Janet Waring Rago, I decided to contact the makers of Ameca (Engineered Arts), currently one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots.  I was hoping to gain some insight as to whether Ameca the robot could have an ‘opinion’ or at least produce some commentary on the work of another robot.  I felt that this would be an interesting interaction to observe.  It could possibly give some insight into whether or not preference featured in a robots repertoire.  Unfortunately, from the outset I made the mistake of using the words ‘think’ and ‘thinking’.  As a result although I did gain some interesting insights, plus a piece of primary research,  the resulting silence from my contact at Engineered Arts made it clear – robots do not ‘think’.   Sadly I already knew this, but I had not phrased or articulated my email particularly well. Below is the actual short email exchange with Engineered Arts.   Email Exchange with Will Jackson – Engineered Arts Hi My name is Karyn Easton and I’m currently studying for an MA in Fine Art Digital at Central Saint Martins University.  I need to produce a research […]

Research Paper Proposal 2.0

Title: AI Art Reception: Investigating Initial Anonymity and Empathy as Strategies for Negative Bias Reduction   Abstract The rapid ascent of AI-generated art raises critical questions for artists working in this medium, particularly regarding the pervasive negative bias it faces among viewers. In the first component of this two part paper, this study investigates the concept of “initial anonymity,” a novel approach wherein artworks are initially presented without disclosing creator details or backstories. Subsequently, the artist’s identity is revealed. This intriguing method challenges traditional perceptions of art by emphasising the pure aesthetic appeal of AI-generated creations. In the second component, this study delves into the compelling realm of empathy as a negative bias-mitigation tool for AI created art. Here, the power of a humanoid robot, equipped with a poignant narrative is harnessed to forge emotional connections between viewers and AI-created art. Inspiration is drawn from the remarkable impact of these narratives on social media engagement. Preliminary Appendix. This pilot study using social media yields promising results, suggesting that both initial anonymity and empathy both exhibit the potential to alleviate negative bias towards AI-generated art. While further rigorous investigation is warranted, these findings pave the way for a deeper understanding of […]

Word Count Checks

A Working Document. This is a place to test out the number of words in the research paper.  Its sole purpose is to test for the number of words in any required document.  In this case the research document. The Fairy Garden Project

Making Something Magical – Earlier this year, I was asked if I would photograph a ‘fairy themed’ garden.  As well as my part-time lecturing role I often take on commissions.  I don’t advertise as people tend to contact me via word of mouth.  Below are a few images that I shot for the project.  The client said that she was delighted and that the images exceeded expectation.  For me it’s always lovely when I receive positive feedback and makes it all worthwhile.  I often question whether I should stick to photography for my project work? It’s what I know and what I think I do best, but in a way that feels sad, because then I don’t feel like I am pushing myself to do better.  I also feel that I am learning so much by trying to expand my horizons.   Fairy Garden Video Short   Project Image Gallery

Image Polls

Primary Research – Choose Your Favourite  Image – Below are the results of my image polls.  This was primary research I conducted to try to see whether or not initial anonymity or empathy could help mitigate the pervasive negative bias that exists towards AI generated art.  All of the following image polls have been subsequently tidied up.  Each image poll/survey has now been given its own page that appears as an appendix to the research paper.   Image Poll #1 Today I’m working on some primary research for my research paper.  I ran the following poll along with the accompanying text among some of my fellow MA students in our WhatsApp group.  As the respondent numbers were low I repeated this exact poll among some of my Facebook friends. ‘Below are four images by relatively famous artists – I’d like to buy a print of one of them for my new extension as they are all pretty well known.  Please can you help me choose which one would you go for? Apologies in advance of the image quality, but colour and composition are probably more important to me than the finer details – Thanks’ 😊         The […]

Action Research

A Leap from Practice to Research – After working so hard producing digital artworks I am becoming increasingly aware that my research paper is being neglected.  This imbalance needs to be corrected.  In order to do this I am going to engage in a form of research each day. This is so that hopefully I will have a substantive body of work prior to my return to work at the end of this month.  Starting with the most recent activity and working downwards this post is a working document of my research activity over the next few weeks.  For a more formal list of my activities please see my Research Timeline and my Research Resource List   Day #21 – Saturday 2nd September – Further refining the second draft of the research paper and integrating research sources and compiling coherent appendices.   Day #20 – Friday 1st September – Compiling the second draft to incorporate all of the polls and revising it to meet the target word count.   Day #19 – Thursday 31st August – Refining headings and layout of the second draft of the research paper.   Day #18 – Wednesday 30th August – Commencing the second draft […]

21 Day Challenge – Outcomes

Wednesday 9th August –     “Darkness falls Walking empty corridors Dusty roads Seeing things never shown You and I we know” – Soldier by Particle House     The MACBA Metamorphosis book is available to buy and if anyone would like a copy then please see the barcode at the bottom of this post.  However, so that no purchase is necessary, I am including images from the book along with their corresponding augmented reality experiences. This means anyone reading this blog can experiment for themselves and no-one is excluded.   Background Information & A Few Pages from MACBA Metamorphosis The MACBA Metamorphosis book forms part two of a planned 3 part series that begins with the exploration of Graffiti in the heart of Barcelona.  The project enlists the help of Ai to re-imagine this graffiti and digital tools are used to place it on the pristine walls of the MACBA museum.  Book one in this series is called ‘Beautiful Light – MACBA – Barcelona’ and more details can be found about it here.  This book has already been augmented using a simple iPhone App except with limited functionality.  However the results can be seen in the video below.   […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #21

Wednesday 2nd August – Well this is it! The end of my challenge – although I suspect it’s really just the beginning of my venture into augmented reality.  I got off to a slow start.  For some reason I couldn’t quite think what I wanted to do this morning. However, I know I’ve still got quite a long way to go so I need to find some motivation from somewhere. As I suspected I didn’t finish everything that I wanted to do. My back got progressively worse and I had to ‘give in’ – I’m now writing retrospectively.  My back continued to decline over the next two days to the point that I could not move from the floor!  Friday 4th August was particularly severe.  Having laid on the floor for around 2 hours I could not stand the pain any longer.  I managed to speak to a GP who said I was suffering with a severe bout of sciatica.  He prescribed me morphine!  This did at least help me to get off the floor! For this reason I reluctantly decided to write off the final day of my challenge.  My plan is to try to recover over the weekend […]
