Monday Guest Lectures – Jyll Bradley – I feel really privileged to have encountered the work of Jyll Bradley through the ‘Monday Guest Lectures’ slot. Here is a short extract from her about page on her Jyll Bradley website: About Jyll Bradley “Born Folkestone, UK, 1966. Lives and works in London. Jyll Bradley makes installations, films, drawings and sculptures. Her work first emerged in the late 1980’s within a cohort of artists interested in combining the formal vigour of Minimalism with ideas of identity and place. Light has been a constant protagonist in her practice, from her early photographic light-box installations to her work with fluorescent plexiglas. Her work often pairs organic and industrial materials, reflecting a desire to bring together different aspects of self – for instance her rural childhood and urban adulthood. Bradley’s work frequently engages with site and the creation of new spaces. Her acclaimed public realm commissions – including Green/Light (for M.R.) for The Folkestone Triennial and Dutch/Light for Turner Contemporary – reference generative structures such as hop gardens and glasshouses, expressing what she sees as the practical, spiritual and emotional work involved in growing a sense of self, place or community. Zoom Session 22 (Sukie Sagoo-Reddy)

Emerging Dialogues Through the Positioning of Textile and Visual Arrangements – I would really love to visit the college more often to do many of the workshops on offer. I often find myself thinking, if only I had my time over again? Therefore, whenever I get the opportunity to participate in any kind of workshop, be it online, or face to face, I’m always really excited. This week was certainly no exception! For a long time now I have been working both photographically and digitally in the flat 2d world of screens. However this week it was all change. Sukie Sagoo-Reddy ran a thought provoking/food for thought workshop with us today. She took us through her Powerpoint presentation that was packed with both information and tasks for us to complete. As usual I screen shot some of her slides as I find this a useful way of storing information for future reference. I think that I will definitely be revisiting this. Alongside Jonathan’s zoom session about the concept of a derive and the Processing Programming workshop, Sukie’s workshop also has to be one of my favourites to date. Craig Burnett

Monday Guest Lectures – Craig Burnett – Craig talks about his book on Philip Guston and his work ‘The Studio’ in 1969. The thing that really struck me about this talk was Craig’s in-depth analysis of the artwork. He hadn’t just analysed it on a surface level but he likened it to other artworks that may or may not have influenced Guston. He even superimposed other images on top of Guston’s work and even more interestingly he removed elements from Guston’s work to see how that impacted the piece. He removed the smoke from the painting and commented on how its removal rendered the painting ‘boring’. He showed how the work of other artists and poets and writers may very well have influenced Guston particularly the work of Barnett Newman. He also gave a quote from Newman regarding abstract art: ‘The whole attitude of abstract painting, for example, has been such that it has reduced painting to an ornamental art whereby the surface picture is broken up in geometrical fashion into a new kind of design-image. George Clark

Monday Guest Lectures – This week I finally had the opportunity to start catching up again on the Monday guest lectures. I really enjoy listening to the guest lectures as I find they are always packed with lots of useful information. This week I took a look at George Clark. Below are a selection of his slides. I like to keep these as reference. I particularly enjoyed George’s talk and perhaps the main ‘takeaways’ from his talk were always keep a lookout for collaborations. The more collaborations the better because you never know what will come from them. One thing he noted was how people had built up an impression of him in that he was very well travelled, worldly wise, knowledgeable etc. George was surprised at this, but he said it wasn’t a bad thing just to run with it. Therefore, if someone thinks that you are perhaps just that bit more successful than you actually are, then maybe it’s not such a bad thing not to enlighten them. Zoom Session 20 (Low Residency)

Low Residency Part 2 – This is part 2 of the Low Residency. This blog covers the second week of activities. To see what happened in the preceding week please see Zoom Session 19. Low Tech Photography (Monday 10.00am with Felix Loftus) I was very torn about taking this workshop as opposed to the printing workshop. Printing is something that I’ve always been very interested in, but I’ve never really had the opportunity to explore it to any great degree. However the pull of photography coupled with tech had way too much of a ‘pull factor’ for me. Indeed, having taken the workshop I knew I had absolutely made the right choice for me! It was nice to see both Trisha and Ester at the workshop too. When we entered the classroom there were a variety of Rasberry Pi processors on the table. these were hooked up to a variety of lenses. Some were native to Rasberry Pi and some were off the shelf smartphone camera lenses. I hate to admit it but I was in tech heaven! Dean Kenning Lectures

Summary of the Dean Kenning Lectures Term One Below are short summaries of the Dean Kenning Lectures that began this term Oct 2022. I will document these on a termly basis and include relevant slides. The Art and Politics of Statues 18/10/22 – This was the first lecture at the start of the term. I think that the key takeaway here was that sometimes it isn’t always appropriate to ‘hijack’ someone else’s cause because it could be seen as self serving self promotion. The case in point was the Marc Quinn ‘A Surge of Power’ (Jen Reid) erected 15th July 2020. Anti-racism protesters in England pulled down a statue of a 17th-century slave trader while demonstrating in solidarity with the US Black Lives Matter movement. Quinn surreptitiously erected the statue early on the morning of 15th July 2020. Although this would seem like an act of solidarity on his part as a white male, it raises questions about the true motivation behind it.
