Film Ideas

Five Minute Film Ideas Generation – I have to admit that working out what I wanted to do for my five minute film has not been easy. I had a number of ideas whirring around in my head. These included: A simple narrative of my practice and how it has evolved A showcase of my work without any narrative A narrative about what I would do if someone took away my camera A narrative about my mobile and how it has evolved An ‘arty’ film full of visual metaphors An animated film A five minute promo for my mobile with a commercial slant to it For a number of weeks I have been wrestling with all of these concepts trying to work out which one to pursue. I ran through a number of the films created last year. I particularly admire the films by Lauryna Narkeviciute and George Harvey. I found George’s work incredibly powerful and moving. Lauryna’s cool black aesthetic also fascianted me. I think with George’s work it was his professionalism, creativity and meticulous attention to detail that I found most inspiring. Artwork Stolen?

Have I been Trained? – I thought this was quite an interesting find. If you would like to know if any of your artwork has been taken without consent and used in an algorithmic dataset then do a search at ‘Have I Been Trained’. I found numerous photos of mine had been used without permission. It was an interesting exercise to say the least. Luckily there are tick boxes that if checked will ask for your image to be removed if you so wish. Taken Without Permission Below are a number of images of mine that came up in the search. Each image below was shot by me and subject to copyright should I chose to enforce it. Until I became aware of the ‘Have I Been Trained’ website, I was unaware they were taken or used to train an algorithm. It was all done without my knowledge or permission.

Book Creation

The Balance of Power Book – I decided to produce another augmented reality book to accompany my ‘Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’ mobile. The mobile has multiple layers of meaning. However, unless the viewer is aware of this, then so many of the messages being conveyed by the structure may sadly be lost. Therefore, I thought it was important to produce an accompanying art book. This will help to unpack some of the mystery as to why the mobile came into being. I think that because I’m really not feeling well at the moment (awful food poisoning) I’m finding it so much harder to be creative. I’m frightened that I’m going to fall at the last hurdle. I’ve never ever felt so devoid of creativity in my life. I’m finding that even basic decisions like choosing images to go into my book really challenging at the moment. Disappointment

Win Some – Lose Some – I was so sad today because I learned that I was rejected for the New Contemporaries. I was really keeping my fingers crossed for this one, but sadly it wasn’t to be. However, on the upside, I learned on Saturday that some of the regular visitors to the Paradiso Gallery had been quite sad to see my mobile go. Many of them were sorry that it had to come down. Apparently it had generated quite some interest and as a result the curator said that they might have to get it back again. This news took the edge off the New Contemporaries disappointment. To hear that (in its absence) people were actually missing a piece of my work, is for me what makes it all worthwhile. Always remember, things happen for you and not to you and every cloud always has a silver lining.

Mattering Life Recap

The Mattering Life – Scientist in Residence Full Recap – I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Mattering Life – Scientist in Residence programme headed up by Heather Barnett. I felt this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me that I will never forget. I met some wonderful scientists, fellow students and researchers and also learned lots of new processes, sampled lots of materials and equipment and found new creative ways to explore. Mattering Life Day #5

Presentations & Evening Event – This morning the whole room was a hive of activity. We were each given a slot to present our work. Charlotte ‘played a blinder’ because she volunteered for us to go first in order to get it over and done with. I absolutely agreed with her sentiment, because it meant that we could sit back and relax and enjoy the presentations from everyone else. Both Kismat and Hyejo worked phenomenally hard to finish the zine and the Powerpoint presentation respectively. I was really feeling the pressure too because I had a short film to produce. I think as a team we all worked amazingly well together! Mattering Life – Day #4

Professor Kosuke Fujishima & More Lab Time – This morning we had a talk by Professor Kosuke Fujishima from the Fujishima Lab at the Earth Life Sciences Institute in the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Experiments from The Grow Lab The plan for today was to to get as much material as possible together in order to assemble a presentation that would align with our chosen topic of ‘Beyond Earth’ and the chemical gardens. Shem the lab technician had suggested that displacing the chemical garden solution and replacing it with epoxy resin might be a great way of preserving the structures. As lab space had been particularly tight in the last ‘Grow Lab Session’ only 3 members of each group were allowed to work in there at any given time. We managed to organise this really well between us. I was interested in recording what was being created and Kismat wanted to remain behind to work on the group’s zine. Mattering Life – Day #3

Choosing a Team – Day three was all about formulating our ideas and finding a team that we each felt most aligned with those ideas. The ideas window had certainly continued to grow from the day before. Topics Begin to Emerge Slowly but surely topics began to emerge. Ideas were grouped onto six white boards. Below are pictures of the whiteboards with ideas. Project Titles Eventually everyone settled on their groups and project titles although some of the decisions weren’t finalised till day four. I was quite worried at first as my ideas just didn’t seem to fit anywhere. I felt quite sad especially as one of the groups was vociferously against any notion of AI. Given my research paper I should have known that some people would be opposed to AI. However, after wandering around aimlessly for a while, I finally found my fit and a great set of team members.
