Research Timeline

A list of Research Activity  – Following is a list of research blogs (starting with the newest first), that deal with any research activity leading up to the production of the required research paper.  The ‘Research Sources and Notes’ will always be current and new papers and research material is found so a link to this will remain at the top of the page.  As new research blogs are added they will be listed here:   RESEARCH, SOURCES AND NOTES   Facebook Poll Investigating Image Preference and Image Loyalty Research Journey#5 – Includes all correspondence to humanoid robotic manufacturers Below are a selection of Craft Research Journals that were read to establish how an art based research paper might look.   Supervisor Meeting #1 Supervisor Meeting #2 Research Sources and Notes Research Journey#4 Research Journey#3 Research Journey#2 Research Journey#1 Zoom Session 26 Zoom Session 25 Zoom Session 24 Zoom Session 23 Zoom Session 21 PDF Button

Research Sources and Notes

A Place for All Research, Notes, Ideas and Appendices – Here is where I will document some of my ideas, research sources and notes for the research paper.  The following list is in chronological order starting with the newest first.  This page will act as my central store of everything I discover.   A link to this page can also be found on my ‘Research Timeline’ page which documents my whole research journey leading up to the production of the final research paper.   FACEBOOK POLL – INVESTIGATING IMAGE PREFERENCES & IMAGE LOYALTY  Email Correspondence with Humanoid Robotic Manufacturers    Below are a selection of Craft Research Journals that were read to establish how an art based research paper might look.   Scary Videos about Ai       Experimental ideas. Take an animated robot – have it present some of ‘its’ art but have it explain that it was up against a problem (to be defined at a later stage) in creating its art.  Next show text to image created art by a person.  Ask the respondents to rate which art they think is better.   Case Study – A Spectator’s View of ‘Can’t Help Myself’ by Sun Yuan […]

Research Paper Journey #4

Using What I Learned – Over the last few zoom sessions, we have been looking at a variety of tips and techniques to help with our research paper writing.  For example: Zoom Session 21 – The Research Paper, an initial discussion Zoom Session 23 – How to Read a Book and Other Ideas Zoom Session 24 – Photograph Analysis with Christabel Harley Zoom Session 25 – Library and Research Tips with Julia Flood Zoom Session 26 – Meet the Supervisor with Janet Waring Rego   All of the sessions listed above proved to be incredibly helpful from: learning how to set aside planned time for research using the Pomodoro technique, to reading only the first sentence of each paragraph in a research paper. An example of the Pomodoro technique is as follows:   The Pomodoro Technique includes five basic steps: Decide on the task you need to do. Set a timer for 25 minutes. Focus only on your task until the timer rings. Take a five-minute break. After every four Pomodoros, take a longer 15–30 minute break.   Taking into account everything that we have learned during these sessions I feel that I’m now ready to start putting pen to […]

Zoom Session 26

Meet the Supervisor – Janet Waring Rago Today was an exciting day because we got to meet our supervisor.  This will be the person to guide us through the task of compiling our research paper.  Jonathan placed us in groups with our respective supervisors.  My supervisor is Janet Waring Rago and my group consists of Thomas, Rachael, Sue, Ellie, Jason and me.  We had a really good ‘get to know you’ session where we all discussed our projects. What struck me most was a feeling that we are all in this together. As such people were very helpful in bringing their comments and ideas to the table in order to help other students in the group.  An interesting link mentioned during the session was Academia.edu, which I intend to check out. Speaking with Janet was very useful and helped me to further narrow my research question.  I am really looking forward to working with Janet on my research paper.     Updated Zentangle Gallery As usual here is the updated Zentangle Gallery.  This continues to build each week as I practice my drawing and mark making.     PDF Button

Ideas Part 2

Research Notes, Ideas and Links – Below is the next stage of my research. I have been collecting a few ideas to help me to narrow down my area of research.  It is interesting how my ideas are beginning to evolve, as I discover new materials, videos, imagery and new ways of thinking. I began with my initial research question ‘Unseen’. However this has already begun to evolve.  I also have a journal of written ideas which I want to compile into more coherent mind maps. I suspect this will be the next stage of my journey. In the meantime here is the flow of my ideas and inspiration. They are in chronological order with the earliest at the top, ending with my latest links. 1). My research question – ‘Unseen’ when the unseen becomes the seen as in the visualisation of sound waves or vibrations or different forms of light such as infrared can those same visualisations stir emotions visually as the noises that created the vibrations.  For example the vibration of a baby crying is this more or less visually appealing than say the visualisation of birds singing.  Can these visualisations be made into artworks? The above research […]

Conversations with Ai

Write Me a Program, A Poem and Then Some – Over the last few weeks I have spent a considerable amount of time researching generative art.  I have looked at what it is, how to create it and the best tools to generate it.  I have worked with a number of Touch Designer tools which are great for this and I’ve also looked at Processing which is a very popular creative coding tool.   I’ve also created a Git Hub account and I’m currently learning all of the associated jargon so that I can look for potential collaborations. Although I have learned an incredible amount about programming, I am still not very conversant with it.  I find that it does not make logical sense to me.  However, that said, I am at the stage where I can more or less understand what a program is doing and I can amend variables accordingly.  This is a massive step forward from only a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately I might struggle to actually write a full program. This is where I wanted to test the limits of ChatGPT.  This natural language simulator can produce code and I was curious to find out if […]

Ai Workshop

The Robots are Coming and They Are Dressed in Lace – I really enjoyed the workshop today called the ‘Robots are coming and They are Dressed in Lace’.   I have discovered that I’m actually quite interested in ‘Ai’ text to image generators like Dalle-2 and Stable Diffusion and Midjourney.  So any information, workshops, scholarly papers etc. are always most welcome. What I particularly liked about the session was the thinking behind it.  Firstly, we were all introduced to Midjourney and how to use it.  Luckily I was already used to using the software, so it was pretty easy to get started.  However, producing images was only part of the exercise.  Jonathan explained that once we had produced our images they needed to be added to a Google Docs page along with our names, the text prompts that we used to generate our images and how we felt about the results.  At the end of the exercise all of the images along with their text prompts and creator information was printed out and put into a black archival quality box. We all know that because these tools are free it is probably fair to say, that we, as users are […]
