Creative Coding

Discovering Creative Coding with Processing – I thoroughly enjoyed our Zoom Session 10 where we were introduced to ‘Processing’. We had a small workshop that was run by Matthew Edwards. Processing is a simple but effective programming language ideal for anyone looking to undertake creative coding.  I was absolutely ‘sold’, indeed I decided to explore further.  Processing.org is a really well designed and thought out educational website teaching creative coding for beginners.  It allows students to copy and edit code within an interactive browser while working through the online tutorial videos.  I was delighted to receive a little certificate once I had completed my first hour of programming tuition.   Certificate of Completion Below is my certificate of completion.  I can thoroughly recommend the Precessing.org website for anyone who would like to begin a creative coding journey.  Recently I have been working with Touch Designer and my last project involved some coding work.  Processing has really helped with my understanding of the Touch designer workflow.  This week I was able to tackle quite a difficult Touch Designer tutorial about ‘Lissajous Curves’.  I believe the success of this project was largely due to understanding what code I was adding and why.  This […]

Zoom Session 10

Programming with Processing 😊 – This has to be one of my favourite sessions so far. I love all of my zoom sessions, but the chance to learn a little programming is always a positive for me. Until today I hadn’t come across the programming environment called ‘Processing’. I downloaded the software onto my computer and I attempted to play around with it a little. This was to familiarise myself with it a before the start of our session. I found the tutorials really informative and I very quickly got the ‘gist’ of it. We also had a guest speaker Matthew Edwards, who came in to give us a demonstration and work with us through some example code. It was a very good pace and pitched perfectly for a total beginner like myself. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the results of my little programs. I also thoroughly enjoyed the group conversation afterwards. Jonathan introduced us to GPT chat. This is an advanced algorithmic program that can write highly intuitive essays from user text prompts. It can also write code. This week I’ve had lots to think about and explore. I have updated my ‘Zentangle’ gallery to reflect all of my little […]

The Phoblographer

Gaining Traction – Back in 2021, I was delighted to appear on the pages of Yahoo Finance, syndicated via the Phlogographer photography magazine. The Phlobographer had placed me as one of the best female photographers of 2021.  I was absolutely delighted!!  Finally someone had found and appreciated my macro work.  I am eternally grateful to them for giving me my first notable break. I was equally delighted when they featured me again this week, this time as one of the best macro photographers.   I love their magazine and I feel really privileged to appear in it.  Please follow the links if you would like to find out more.   Examples of Work

Zoom Session 9

Playing Catch-Up – Even though I was only away in London for a few days, I feel there is so much that I need to catch up on! I found zoom session 9 on the playlist and managed to watch it all. Julia Flood, librarian at CSM gave a very informative presentation about the library and it’s services that are available to us. This is something that I want to explore further and I will be documenting this as I begin my research journey.  I really do want to take full advantage of what the library has to offer as I felt Julia’s talk was very inspiring! In the meantime please see below for my weekly ‘Zentangle’ Design.  I felt a little out at sea this week with all of the information about the library.  This is why I chose to produce an image of a boat.  It certainly brought me back down to Earth in terms that I really do need need do properly conducted research. CSM has access to all kinds of wonderful resources that I really need to explore.  I have already started to do some basic keyword searches and I think that help with materials will […]

London Part 2

A City of Culture – I’ve visited London on numerous occasions but this time was different because it was with the specific aim of visiting art galleries and museums.  My visit to the capital last week was a business trip. This week I was helping my colleagues to escort 30 students around a number of museums and galleries.  Following is an account of my time there.  I have also documented some of the most amazing artworks at a number of leading galleries.   Day 1 Our first day was spent travelling. Just like last week I travelled from Paignton to Paddington with one change at Newton Abbot.  However it very nearly didn’t happen because a train broke down near Paignton.  This meant that we were almost an hour late. Therefore we had to get a later train from Newton Abbot to Paddington. Sadly because of the delay we lost about 2 hours and arrived around 9.00pm instead of 7.00pm. Above is the view from my  hotel room window.  Although it was a later than planned arrival, we dumped our bags and headed out to find somewhere to eat. We wound up at a Turkish restaurant near to the Ibis Hotel […]

Reflection Part 3

The Last Few Weeks – I’m currently sat on a train to London. The act of staring out of the window means that now is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the last few weeks. Since writing my last reflective blog I have been experimenting with a number of ideas and images. I have also been steadily working away in the background on a variety of software tutorials. As usual I will answer the following questions to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   Reflective Video Before I answer the above questions I wanted to add this little video which I felt complemented my reflective process. The video is a time-lapse looking up at the sky through one of our sky lanterns.  I’m interested in the passage of time and if you look closely you can see the clouds as they whiz past.  I find the movement of the clouds as they pass overhead quite fascinating. A time-lapse speeds up the passage of time so it is possible to appreciate more fully the motion […]

Little Wins #1

Disasters Versus The Little Wins! – After returning from London I had so many images to document on my blog that I used up my hosting package allowance.  I have requested to migrate to another, better package but I will be extremely nervous until my update goes through and my website hopefully appears unscathed at the other side. I have taken multiple screenshots of my blog to date.  So if I lose my website and blog I will be able to quickly get some of my content back in some form as quickly as possible. I’m terrified that this process will go wrong! However, I can’t continue my blog if I can’t upload images. I am a believer that every cloud has a silver lining, or that if something bad happens, something nice will come along to offset it.   My good news came in the form of being ‘tagged’ in an Instagram post by the official account of Bromsgrove School in Bromsgrove.   They had referenced my work and set up little experiments to try to replicate it.  As a teacher I felt immense pride that my work had inspired someone enough to want to replicate it and use […]

London

Time & Travel  It’s Better to Travel Than to Arrive? – This was a quote I stumbled across earlier this year.  Unfortunately I’m not sure who said it, but given I was travelling to London I decided to use it anyway.  This was the first of two trips to London this year.  As I am a keen photographer I decided to document anything interesting.  I couldn’t help but notice that the light was particularly beautiful at Newton Abbot train station.  However this was nothing compared to the beauty of the ceiling structures at Paddington train station.  Below is a small collection of images including the view from my hotel window. A Few Random Shots with My Smartphone Unfortunately I had decided to leave my DSLR at home.  However, should I ever decide to shoot Paddington station again these are the kind of shots I would take with my DSLR.  My smartphone is great for this activity, but maybe not so good with its pixel count.     The Most Underwhelming Time-Lapse Ever! At the start of this blog I muted – it is better to travel than to arrive?  I’m not sure that is strictly true, but just in case, […]

Line in the Sand

A Sand Pendulum – Discovering Hidden Motion – I have been meaning to put up this short sand pendulum unboxing video for well over a week now.  I’ve done so much work lately in the digital space, it feels like the right time to move back into the physical again.  Shortly after posting this I will be travelling to London which will be a very physical experience and I’m looking forward to documenting that.  In the meantime here is the start of my journey looking at motion.  This may be something that I want to incorporate into my work if possible but at the moment it remains just an idea.  Sand pendulums have always fascinated me.  I love their rhythmic motion and the patterns they create as they follow their path.  This blog is really about exploring another facet of my thinking. I feel that I still have so many ideas to explore and so little time to do it before I need to narrow my focus.  I am are going to be working with physical ‘things’, digital ‘things’ or a combination of both?  What do I want to ‘say’ through my work? Do I even want to ‘say’ anything? […]

Zoom Session 8

Much Food for Thought – This week was a real ‘food for thought’ week.  We started our meeting with a presentation from the Post Grad Community Team, who gave a very informative talk about what they they do and the weekly newsletter they create.  I am really interested in a number of the items they spoke about including: a Post Grad Ambassador role and a potential residency.  My heart is saying yes apply, but my head is asking how feasible is a residency when I’m juggling both work and a young teen. Sadly, I don’t think she (the young teen) would like it very much if I disappeared for a few weeks especially during her GCSE year.  But I’m the eternal optimist so I’ll never say never. Before I begin to work through our session today this afternoon, here is today’s Zentangle doodle.  If you would like to see all of these weekly images to date, here is the blog post where I am curating them.   Today’s Zentagle   Imagination This week much of our discussion revolved around ‘imagination’.  In our small group (it was nice to see some familiar faces) we chatted about what curtails imagination for us. […]
