Zoom Session 30

End of Year 1 – Really? I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that this year has completely whizzed by! It hardly seems like yesterday that I was actually applying to join the course.  Sadly I had to miss the last session because of work commitments.  However, by visiting the course YouTube playlist, I managed to catch up on the last session which was a writing workshop with Laura Robertson.  As usual I have included a selection of slides for future reference. Throughout the session we had to perform a short series of writing tasks.  The first was a seemingly simple task of describing a shoe.  My thoughts were as follows: An item of footwear.  It can be made from a variety of materials.  It normally covers a foot or usually one shoe on each foot.  It might cover all of the foot or it may leave some of the foot exposed.  It can also come in a variety of colours. Laura then went on to read a few passages from a book listed in the slides below.  These passages demonstrated just how much detail could be found in the description of a shoe.  This was a great exercise in […]

Zoom Session 29

The Penultimate session for this Academic Year – This session was actually quite a poignant session for me, because work pressures will possibly stop me attending the last session of my first year.  Sadly there is no way that I can escape working on Tuesday next week – it’s one of our busiest weeks.  However, I will watch the recording and I still have two tutorials to come.  I honestly cannot believe that  the first year has gone!  Where did it go?  While pondering the swift passage of time I am pleased to blog about the session this week. This week we were asked to think about what success looks like, and more specifically what kind of metaphors and symbols come to mind when thinking about success as an artist.  I felt that success for me was being pleased with pieces of work that I have created.  More specifically success might be fame and fortune.  In our group discussion some even suggested power as a result of fame. Our group chat was interesting as we all had many different ideas.  I joked that I’d like to be given free tickets to Bilderberg, or become an honorary member of the World […]

Zoom Session 28

Making Session with Sukie Sagoo-Reddy – Today we had another making session with Sukie Sagoo Reddy.  This was a really welcome break from writing and I always enjoy Sukie’s workshops as they give a lot of food for thought.  It was interesting that the workshop was very similar to the one we did a few weeks ago (Zoom Session 22), because this gave me the opportunity to see if I had improved at all?  A link to the slides from this workshop and the original  workshop are here.  These always prove useful to refer back to.  As with the first session we uploaded an image that covered the 5 senses.  I couldn’t find one of my own in time so I used one from the internet.  However for the second task I managed to find two images which had a connection.   Little Bee and Floral Pattern I chose the images below because the little bee is one of my favourite images that I have shot and the floral pattern seemed to work with it.  My thinking was flowers and bees.   Moving on from there we looked once again at the theme of chasing shadows.  I think that my […]

Zoom Session 27

A Making Session – This week we had a making session.  However before we embarked on that task we did two other exercises – a writing exercise and a random searching exercise.  This week was a really interesting week from a collaboration and connections point to view.  Earlier in the day I had posted to our WhatsApp chat group, a pdf of some images I shot of the beautiful light and architecture at the MACBA in Barcelona. Sue saw this and she mentioned that she might like to paint one of the images which I thought was great!  So, during our first task which was a writing exercise I wrote the following:     From our writing exercise we then had to perform a series of searches which were initially based on the word or phrase that jumped out at us from our search.  You can see from my writing above that I circles ‘I’m super excited’.  Therefore this was to be my starting phrase.  The sequence of searching was specific and as follows: Searching Exercise Take a phrase and search it Go to the 7th page of results Scroll to the 7th link Rinse and repeat 7 times to […]

Zoom Session 26

Meet the Supervisor – Janet Waring Rago Today was an exciting day because we got to meet our supervisor.  This will be the person to guide us through the task of compiling our research paper.  Jonathan placed us in groups with our respective supervisors.  My supervisor is Janet Waring Rago and my group consists of Thomas, Rachael, Sue, Ellie, Jason and me.  We had a really good ‘get to know you’ session where we all discussed our projects. What struck me most was a feeling that we are all in this together. As such people were very helpful in bringing their comments and ideas to the table in order to help other students in the group.  An interesting link mentioned during the session was Academia.edu, which I intend to check out. Speaking with Janet was very useful and helped me to further narrow my research question.  I am really looking forward to working with Janet on my research paper.     Updated Zentangle Gallery As usual here is the updated Zentangle Gallery.  This continues to build each week as I practice my drawing and mark making.

Zoom Session 25

Library & Research Tips with Julia Flood – In this session we used a workbook to help us with narrowing down our research and moving us closer to pinning down  our research question.  We also looked at how to conduct a Boolean search using a variety of characters acting as operators.   Below are some useful links from the session, including: Access to SCONUL Abe Books Archive.org Wob – a source of cheap books Workbook Link UAL Libsearch Library Guides     A Selection of Presentation Slides Below is a selection of slides from the presentation.  I found the workbook with the Boolean searches exercise particularly helpful.     Updated Zentangle Gallery As usual here is the updated Zentangle Gallery.

Zoom Session 24

Photograph Analysis & Research – Christabel Harley I’m actually filling in this zoom session retrospectively as this is the first opportunity for the last 3 weeks that I’ve been able to blog.  This is one of our busiest times of year at work. Prepping all of the students for their art exams although, very enjoyable and rewarding, is also very stressful and time consuming.  Therefore it’s nice to be able to sit down and finally catch up on events. Christabel’s talk was excellent! I wasn’t sure if I was approaching my research paper properly.  However, when she explained about putting everything into a metaphorical ‘paper bag’, tucked safely away for further use, things started to make sense.  This is pretty much how I’ve been approaching the project up to now, so this validated my methodology. During our session we looked at a particular piece of research.  It was called ‘The Art of Semi Living’ by Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr. Looking at this paper was actually really helpful on two counts.  Firstly, we were tasked with reading only the first sentence of each paragraph to get a ‘feel’ for the paper.  This isn’t something that I had tried before, so […]

Zoom Session 23

How to Read a Book & Other Ideas – This week was all about reading and getting the most from it.  Apparently Kevin Kelly the founder of Wired magazine had said that we are now in an age where we are moving from book literacy to screen literacy.  As part of this we discussed the F pattern of eye movements when tracked across a screen.  I always enjoy our group sessions and find the information from them really useful.  I discovered that that there is something called ChatPdf which I would like to explore further.  I would also like to try out ‘Voice Dream Reader’ and ‘Speechify’ which are text to audio generators. We also looked at the ‘Pomodoro’ technique as a way to approach the research for the research paper.  An outline of how this technique should be used is summarised in the slide selection below.  I intend to try this as I think it will be very helpful as both a time management and motivational tool. Perhaps the biggest takeaway for me this week though, was the notion of: ‘I feel’, ‘I wonder’, ‘I think’.  I’d never ever thought about something in those terms before and this week […]

Zoom Session 22 (Sukie Sagoo-Reddy)

Emerging Dialogues Through the Positioning of Textile and Visual Arrangements – I would really love to visit the college more often to do many of the workshops on offer.  I often find myself thinking, if only I had my time over again?  Therefore, whenever I get the opportunity to participate in any kind of workshop, be it online, or face to face, I’m always really excited.  This week was certainly no exception!  For a long time now I have been working both photographically and digitally in the flat 2d world of screens.  However this week it was all change. Sukie Sagoo-Reddy ran a thought provoking/food for thought workshop with us today. She took us through her Powerpoint presentation that was packed with both information and tasks for us to complete.  As usual I screen shot some of her slides as I find this a useful way of storing information for future reference.  I think that I will definitely be revisiting this.  Alongside Jonathan’s zoom session about the concept of a derive and the Processing Programming workshop, Sukie’s workshop also has to be one of my favourites to date.  I don’t think that I’m particularly good at 3d but I am […]

Zoom Session 21

The Research Paper (An initial discussion) – Yesterday was our first day back and it was great to see everyone again!  This week we launched straight into a discussion about the research paper needed as part of our course.  This is probably an area that I am really under confident about, but I would really like to learn more about the process of doing this.  Over Easter I continued working on my blogs relating to the idea of a derive.  In my blog the ‘Time of the Signs’ I discovered that we are actually bombarded daily in our environments, with huge amounts of information, much of which we are probably unaware.  As part of the process of producing the research paper it is essential to look at something that intrigues us, or that bothers us.  Therefore, I was debating whether the idea of subliminal, visual information overload and its effects could be a good starting point?  For example do people prefer less information or visual clutter in their world?  Does a plethora of negative information unconsciously affect a person and can this be measured?  Is there a way to limit information overload?  Up until now, I really had not considered […]
