21 Day Challenge – Day #16

Friday 28th July – Sadly my back is still very sore! However I determined to continue with my challenge. Today has been about content for augmentation.  Today I watched an After Effects tutorial to help me produce some simple motion graphics but these could prove useful as part of my project.  I’ve also decided to animate some of my images from the Barcelona Graffiti book as well as using Processing to produce generative art.  I also want to try rotating different objects too. I feel that the possibilities are becoming very exciting.  There’s just so much I want to do but I feel time is slipping away.  As soon as this challenge is complete I need to pay serious attention to my research paper.  Unfortunately this has taken a back seat.  The makers of Ameca the robot never replied to my email after their initial response. Therefore I need to formulate a backup plan.  I know that time will be even tighter when I return to work so I really need to ensure that I ‘make hay while the sun shines’.   What Did I Learn? I learned how to create some interesting motion graphics ready for augmentation   What […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #15

Thursday 27th July – Yet again I headed off to the doctors to see if anything could be done to help my back.  I had good news and bad news.  The good news was that my sore back issue was purely muscular as opposed to skeletal.  The bad news was that it could take up to six weeks to improve! Great!  However, yet again I was not to be beaten.  I decided to try out the Blender tutorials from yesterday.  I wanted to augment some bouncing and rotating cubes that were covered in the same material as the picture that they were augmenting from (the target image). I was surprised at how easily I managed to follow the tutorials and I had quite a lot of success.   What Did I Learn? I learned how to both animate and set the material of an object in Blender.  I then learned how to export the rotating object as a .png series with a transparent background.  I also learned that Blender is an amazing feature rich program but its menus are both weighty and complex.  I will certainly not become a blender whiz kid any time soon, but I have enough knowledge […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #14

Wednesday 26th July – Here I am at day 14 of my 21 day challenge to stick at one thing every day for 21 days.  I can’t believe that I am already three quarters of the way through!  I wouldn’t exactly call myself an expert at AR yet but I’ve now got a pretty good understanding of how these programs work. I am certainly enjoying this journey.  I started my day feeling relatively optimistic. However, after waddling to the doctors with my sore back and then duly dosing myself with a mix of co-codimol and ibuprofen I was feeling pretty ‘wiped out’. I was determined not to be beaten and I started to watch some blender tutorials as I wanted to animate some cubes using my images.   What Did I Learn? I learned how to add textures to objects and rotate them in Blender.  After trying out some new augmented reality software I discounted it as it was too limited and extra functionality was far too expensive.   What Did I Actually Achieve? I managed to produce some more Processing programs to use in my augmented reality project.

21 Day Challenge – Day #13

Tuesday 25th July – I’m currently pretty immobile laid across my bed. Sadly my back deteriorated overnight meaning that I can’t move very far. I did manage to get a physiotherapist appointment which was great! Unfortunately the appointment isn’t till 12th October! So I’m not sure about this? Perhaps I need to stay in bed till then? It seems our NHS is in free fall at the moment – well if you have a sore back it is.  Luckily I have managed to edit my work from yesterday and also upload it.  Please see below for the results from yesterday’s endeavours.  The video below has moved on as it incorporates rotation as well as scaling plus a small dancing robot.  At the moment there is no creative intent behind the robot but it helps to show what is possible.  Again I have used the same music as I feel that the lyrics are very apt.     Just as I thought things were going so well my sore back really did take a turn for the worst and I had to finally give in and contact the ‘docs’.  By the time I returned from seeing one of our very new […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #11

Sunday July 23rd – I can’t believe it, I’m halfway through the challenge! I’m hardly an augmented reality ‘whiz kid’ but already I’m able to produce interesting animations to hide in the pages of my Barcelona Graffiti book.  My plan is to complete the augmentation of this book with augmented reality experiences that become increasingly complex towards the end. Today was a relatively successful day.  I managed to produce the two videos below.  The first shows the word ‘Graffiti’ slowly bouncing around the scene.  I chose the word graffiti because it is the subject on which my book is based.  The second video shows the image slowly scale up when it is tapped on screen.  This is the first video where I am exploring different behaviours.  At last I’m starting to move into augmenting my book after learning the basics.   What Did I Learn? I learned that my software definitely won’t support multiple image tracking.  It’s actually fine because I have a couple of ideas for a work around.  I learned that assigning behaviours is a little more confusing than I originally thought.  I also learned how to delete behaviours that had already been assigned.  This was easy to […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #10

Saturday 22nd July – Well today could be likened to two steps forward and 1 step backwards.  My MacBook kept kept crashing, so I had to resort to my Windows desktop.  At first I was optimistic about installing the augmented reality software on it.  Unfortunately it was half way through the install that the big, ‘disk full’ sign appeared.  At this point I knew that I could no longer put off cleaning up my desktop PC.  I found an external hard drive and cleared some disk space.  After numerous attempts I finally managed to install the required software. However still nothing ran smoothly! A combination of slow running speeds and user error, meant, that a job that should have taken around 2 hours to complete, took around 7 hours! it wasn’t all bad news though, I managed to augment 2 pages of my Barcelona Graffiti book.  I’ve still got some fine tuning to do but I’m pretty happy with the results.  As I didn’t finish till late tonight I haven’t recorded any videos but I have created the work.  My aim is to show progress maybe tomorrow if things run more smoothly.  I’m not completely disillusioned with today.  I’ve still […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #9

Friday 21st July – Today’s challenge started with a conversation with ChatGPT.  I was looking for ways of creating digital art that would work well with augmented reality.  After many conversations and frustrations ChatGPT finally came up with some interesting programs for me to try.  It did take a very long time and a lot of amended code but finally ChatGPT did ‘come good’.  Now that I have completed pretty much all of the augmented reality tutorials my main focus has to be putting into practice what I have learned so far. I’m actually quite amazed at how much I have learned while doggedly pursuing the 21 day challenge.  Each day my knowledge is building.  For me this has been a very worthwhile exercise!   What Did I Learn? Today I learned that not every day do I need to make a little video.  I’ve actually been working really hard today with ChatGPT to create some amazing generative art pieces.  It has taken a lot of time explaining my requirements and testing the resulting programs but I’m pretty happy with the way it is all going.  I am learning that you don’t actually have to be a computer ‘whiz kid’ […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #8

Thursday 20th July – Today I am feeling a little burned out with all things digital.  I spent all morning looking for ‘Touch Designer’ effects that I could incorporate into my augmented reality work.  All it did was depress me because I don’t really understand the nodal way of programming.  I keep having to tell myself that actually I’m not a coder or particularly conversant in programming.  Even the augmented reality tutorials are becoming more and more complex.   Today’s tutorial covered the various ways in which animated 3d objects can be imported.   What Did I Learn? Today I learned that it would take me weeks of training on Blender to create my own animated objects from scratch, therefore I’ve decided to use Adobe’s solution for this and use downloadable assets when required.  I learned how to import 3d animated objects.  I also learned that I’m never ever going to become a ‘Touch Designer’ whiz kid.  I learned that I need to think more creatively about how I can use the skills and knowledge that I do have, to better effect.   What Did I Actually Achieve? I managed to identify some Touch Designer training videos that hopefully will […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #7

Wednesday 19th July – I cannot believe how quickly the time is passing! It’s already day 7 and I’m now a third of the way through my 21 day challenge!  Already I’m feeling much more confident than when I first started.  As I continue to master the basics, I need to consider the type of assets I’d like to create to hide in the real world.  I also need to work out how I can fund a new MacBook!  Today my laptop drove me literally nuts!  Every time I attempted to launch something in my augmented reality software, my MacBook crashed and restarted!  I was ‘tearing my hair out’.  Luckily I did manage to understand behaviours which was the lesson for today.  This is where a particular action is assigned to an asset in the software.  In other words if you have say an image of a ball you can make make the ball spin with a tap, or it might bounce if you approach it in augmented reality space.  Below is a video of the project I made today.  When a the image in my Barcelona Graffiti book is found a small scene appears with a sun, trees and […]

21 Day Challenge – Day #6

Tuesday 18th July – Today came with a mix of both frustration and delight.  Frustration because the software I was using today, as opposed to yesterday, was in beta and continually crashed my MacBook.  I suspect that this was a combination of computer bugs plus a lack of computer resource on my side.  However, I still managed to achieve a video short and again I learned lots! Below is my creation from today.  One thing for sure I need a new computer!   A Rotatable Spaceman Appears on a Book in my Bedroom   What Did I Learn? I actually learned lots today.  I learned how to assign behaviours to make objects move in space.  This effect can be seen when the spaceman rotates.  This behaviour is initiated when the spaceman is tapped on screen. I also learned about different types of augmented reality experience placements.  Slowly but surely I am building my knowledge base.   What Did I Actually Achieve? Although my video is still very basic I managed to rotate a 3d virtual object in space that was tracked to one of my book images.  I also managed to assign a rotate command so that the spaceman turned […]
