Mental Derive Part #3

Made with a Mobile – As the deadline to Unit 2 rapidly approaches I’m aware that I really need to be pulling together all of my ideas.  I have been trying to build a number of skills lately and it’s been quite a steep learning curve. I’ve explored augmented reality through my 21 day challenge.  I’ve explored projection mapping, physical book printing and 3d paper sculpture via my Grotto Print.  I’ve also explored drawing which appeared on my mobile 3d kinetic art piece. However, today I managed to return to my first love that is photography.  This afternoon I decided to make two short films showing the beautiful motion created by my mobile.   The background to this particular mobile piece can be found in ‘Mental Derive’ Part #1 and ‘Mental Derive’ Part #2. I deliberately shot both short videos using a very wide aperture as I wanted to add depth to my film.  I wanted to see the patterns on the mobile slowly come in and out of focus as they gently glide backwards and forwards.  I think that I managed to do this.  Please see below for the two videos created today.   Kinetic Art with a Mobile […]

Projection Mapping

Experiments in Projection Mapping – I mentioned in an earlier post that I always had an interest in projection mapping.  This year for my birthday my family bought me everything I needed to start.     I’ve always had it at the back of my mind to equip myself with knowledge about: Touch Designer, Augmented Reality and Projection Mapping. I know  I’m working towards something, but I haven’t quite yet figured out what? I would like to produce a mix of human, physical, digital and ai hybrid art. I feel that widening my skill set must surely be a good thing? I feel another 21 day challenge approaching, but this time I don’t want to undertake it in such a rigorous manner as my last challenge.  There’s so much I want to do and I think concentrating on just one thing might be enormously prohibitive. Please see below for my first attempt at projection mapping.  I was quite pleased with the results.  I like the way the image sits and even sometimes bends around the paper structure. I only have a couple of weeks left until the end of unit 2.  I also know that yet again I’m facing a […]

Zoom Session 35

Group Critique #1 – Today we had our first group critique ‘crit’.  I was in a group with Donald, Ellie, Sean and Shirin.  It was really great to see how everyone was getting on.  Sean spoke about his paintings, Ellie showed some images of her sculptures and Shirin showed her large painting about Utopia.  To see everyone working so well with physical materials was great and it has only strengthened my resolve to edge closer to physicality.  I had some nice feedback.  Ellie definitely ‘hit the nail on the head’ when it came to understanding my thinking.  The MACBA Metamorphosis work is all about giving recognition to the graffiti artists of Barcelona.  It’s about placing them into one of Barcelona’s most prestigious art galleries where they too can have a voice.  It’s about disrupting the average of that museum and filling it with something that may never appear there. Ellie also recommended the work of Peter Fluck as he had made some interesting mobiles.  I am particularly fascinated by mobiles at the moment so any ideas are very welcome. Shirin felt it would have been nice if there was perhaps some of my own drawings as part of the project. […]

Little Wins #5

Artist Reference – In order to help my students I often advise them to look at a variety of artists that may inspire them.  Therefore, it’s so nice when I find myself being referenced as an artist.  This is the second time now that people have sought me out on Instagram to ask for details about my work with regards to referencing it. The first time was Bromsgrove School and today I had yet another request from someone studying ‘A’ Level Photography not from my college. Some of my best contacts have come via Instagram so I’ll continue to work on my presence there.

Biscuit Factory Birthday

It’s My Birthday! And Other Things – Today is my birthday and I’m really excited because I’ve received both a mini projector and projection mapping software as presents from my family! I have wanted to try projection mapping for as long as I’ve known of its existence, which is a long time now.  I also recently enjoyed ‘The Van Gough Experience’ in London which added to my enthusiasm. However, because I can see a use for it regarding my MA work, the need to explore it has become much more urgent. At the moment I am visiting family and friends in the North East of England.  Whenever I come up this way I always like to take a trip to Newcastle.  Last year I visited the Laing Art Gallery, this year I decided to take a trip to ‘The Biscuit Factory’.  This is a small gallery just on the outskirts of Newcastle City Centre. Although a small gallery it had both a restaurant and some beautiful art pieces.  It was a different kind of space to the Tate Modern.  The mobiles displayed there were also very different to those of Alexander Caulder. However, the gallery was beautiful and  provided much […]

MACBA Metamorphosis

Barcelona’s Hidden Artists – While visiting Barcelona, I became fascinated with the vast swathes of graffiti covered walls.  It felt as if collectively everyone had given up on cleaning the walls.  Indeed, it felt as if the walls themselves had become works of art.  In stark contrast I also noted the pristine internal walls of the MACBA (One of Barcelona’s contemporary art museums). I was so ‘taken with’ the beautiful light inside of the MACBA that I decided to photograph it.  I also photographed many graffiti laden walls across Barcelona.  There really was a such a stark contrast between the pristine and the messy that I began to wonder what the MACBA would look like if it was plastered in graffiti? The internal walls of the MACBA were so beautifully clean that I felt an irresistible urge to ‘plaster’ them.  The vibrant colours and designs found externally on the Streets of Barcelona seemed a logical choice. Unfortunately, my dream of taking spray paints to the MACBA walls was pretty much out of the question.  However, I did have access to Photoshop, Ai and augmented reality. As a direct result of my thinking I managed to self publish 3 small art […]

Zoom Session 34

Where Do Ideas Originate? – This week we talked about the origin of our ideas.  We split into groups and discussed where we felt our ideas originated.  In our group we had quite an interesting discussion.  When we returned to the main group the conversation became even deeper to encompass concepts such as the divine and spirituality.  One of our group members told us about being baptised in the river Jordan and explained what a life affirming event this had been.  It’s great to hear of these experiences. For someone brought up in the Christian faith, to be baptised at the same place as Jesus must have been truly amazing! We also discussed the Dunning-Kruger effect.  Essentially this is where someone naively thinks that they know more about a topic than they actually do.  It could be described as being at ‘Peak Stupid’.  Hopefully as they begin to learn more, they drop down from ‘Peak Stupid’ into ‘The Valley of Despair’.  At this point they gradually rise from ‘The Valley of Despair’ as they gain more knowledge and become more masterful at their subject. Interestingly, I had already been introduced to the Dunning Kruger Effect by a colleague of mine. […]

Calder at Tate Modern

Up Close and Personal with Alexander Calder – In my search for a human, AI and digital hybrid model of art, I came across Alexander Calder. I don’t know why but I instantly fell in love with his kinetic mobiles.  I discovered that some of his models are currently housed in the Tate Modern. I knew that I had a trip to London coming up so I was keen to visit the gallery to see his work in person. It was a great experience! I saw a mobile suspended from the ceiling and one of his ‘Stabiles’ standing firm on a plinth.  I really do find the kinetic motion of mobiles really appealing. I was quite pleased with my very first attempt at this beautiful and mesmerising form of 3d art.  Below is a short video of my mobile in motion.   Random Thoughts Mobile The designs used on the circular parts of my mobile are designs produced by me each week.  They are freehand pen drawings that are subsequently digitised.  Each design represents a state of mind.  I simply let my hand move over the paper and make marks.  It’s completely random.       Calder’s Mobiles at the […]

Supervisor Meeting #2

Meeting with Janet Waring Rago – This was my second meeting with Janet.  It was really nice to see a friendly face after such a long journey with my research paper. Janet gave me a few good pointers and suggested that ChatGPT (in the role of a research paper reviewer) might give some additional insights into the strengths an weaknesses of my paper.  Janet gave some specific text as follows:   “As an academic reviewer please provide an evaluation of the strengths and weakness of the following research paper”   This is definitely something that I’m going to try. The time seemed to really fly over but I came away from the meeting feeling much more reassured which is great!   The Verdict! After a couple of tries I had to break down my paper into two parts in order to have ChatGPT analyse it. Here are the responses from ChatGPT when asked the following question:   “As an academic reviewer please provide an evaluation of the strengths and weakness of the following research paper”   Analysis from Part One of the paper Thank you for sharing part one of your paper. Here’s an evaluation of its strengths and weaknesses: […]
