Grotto Print Ideas #3

Affairs of the Heart – In my last post about the Grotto print project, I mentioned that I was becoming increasingly unsure about the clocks project.  Therefore I asked my friends on Facebook for help.  In some sense I wished that I hadn’t bothered because unfortunately it just further confused the matter. Below are the choices I gave to my Facebook Friends. So far not many people have commented on the second set of options with the coloured graffiti hearts.  However, for the first set of options namely the colourful clocks vs the black patterned hearts, it was an absolute tie.  Over 16 people responded and the comments indicated that those who liked the clocks really liked them and those who loved the black hearts really loved them! I just don’t know which to choose. Personally I am torn between all three of them.  I don’t really feel that the clocks are fully mine even though I had quite a hand in generating them from one of my own images.  The graffiti hearts are quite busy and vibrant and although the photography, collaging, design and layout are all mine, they do incorporate elements of other artists’ work. The black and […]

Grotto Print Ideas #2

Adding Value – I quite like the idea of ‘Killing Time’ and the oil on water re-imagined clocks. However, I do feel that there needs to be some level of interactivity with my Grotto print. I decided that since posting the video short included in the Grotto Print Ideas blog, more of the clocks needed to be shown.  This is pure experimentation and the full video can be seen below. A couple of years ago I began to explore Paul’s book.  I felt that the nature of the folds created within would lend themselves very well to warping the clock faces and dials even further.   Killing Time – Calming Edit   As well as the calming edit, I also produced a shorter more rousing video short, showing the clocks animated as they warp and destruct.  This is more in keeping with the idea of ‘Killing Time’.     I’m debating whether or not to include these either one or both of these digital edits as part of the print sale? At this point in time it is just a thought.  I’ve a long long way to go before I make a firm decision. I’ve also had another idea regarding […]

Zoom Session 32

More Grotto Print Info and William Kentridge Discussion – This week we looked at some printing practicalities with regards to the Grotto print.  I could not for the life of me remember where to find the colour profiles in Photoshop, but luckily Jonathan had the program open and demonstrated. I’m quite excited about the print project.  Ideally I’d love to make a physical print but with my current workload sadly it will have to be digital.  Although I am thinking hard about ways I can make it more interesting. I felt quite tired this week. I’ve been wracking my brain non stop about where I want to take my work and then we took a brief look at William Kentridge.  I have to admit I hadn’t come across him before, but I really liked the way in which he narrated his work.  I think this could prove very useful for my own future work.  I’m looking forward to further discussions on his work next week as we didn’t manage to cover everything this week. Below are a selection of slides from today.  They contain a mix of the Kentridge discussion prompts that we had and also some printing information.   […]

Grotto Print Ideas #1

Print Ideas & Adam Bridgland (Jealous London) –  Today we had an interesting talk about the ‘Grotto Project’ formerly ‘Merch’. Adam Bridgland from Jealous London came along to share some insights and revealed a lot of useful information – see a selection of his slides at the end from the talk.  I’ve just been looking at the deadlines and I’ve realised that I really do need to start moving on this. Some very interesting takeaways from the talk included answers to questions such as: what was a popular poster colour? What kind of images sold well?  Adam suggested that blue was a popular colour and skulls, butterflies and cute cats seemed to do quite well.  Unfortunately the human form, unless comprising a skull did not seem to fair quite so well. I’ve produced many digital images over the years, but the thought of choosing just one singular image to print has really made me think.  I have some interesting macro photographs of oil on water hanging on my walls.  One was bought by a large Australian advertising company, one hangs in the local hospital and one appears on an album cover.  Even Adobe use some of my work.  Therefore I can’t […]

Zoom Session 31

Beginning of a New Academic Year – Today was our first day back and it was so lovely to see everyone again!  However, there was some sad news as it looks as if we are losing 4 of our fellow students due to the cost of living crisis.  This makes me so sad and angry, because education to me is the sign of a healthy society.  I myself have lost so many fantastic students because of lack of funding.  I recall one student in particular who so wanted to work in the design industry.  She worked incredibly hard to pass her exam, and despite all the odds (multiple learning difficulties) she achieved it!  Sadly she couldn’t continue though, due to lack of funding.  When I found that she wasn’t returning I was actually heartbroken because I knew how hard she had tried – why? – because as her teacher, I was with her every step of her artistic journey.  She told me her dreams for the future as a fashion designer and how much she wanted to pass her exam.  This was so that she could progress onto the next level.  Lack of funds meant that even though she passed […]

London Visit

Van Gough Experience & Whitechapel Gallery – “To love many things is to love life, to love life is to be happy.” Yesterday I travelled to London and today while there, I had the opportunity to visit a couple of galleries. Since I became aware of its existence I always wanted to visit the Van Gough immersive experience.  It certainly did not disappoint! I actually learned a huge amount today – so much so that my childhood perception of Van Gough completely changed! Whenever Van Gough was mentioned, either at school or at art college, his persona in my mind, was one of someone who, couldn’t paint very well, went mad, chopped his ear off and then killed himself. In my adolescent mind this was probably as a result of him not being able to paint very well. Clearly my childhood view was both incredibly uniformed and naive and as I learned more about his life and works, my views began to gradually change.  However today was completely revelatory!  Van Gough reimagined for the digital age, complete with a narrative of his life was incredibly moving.  Up to this point I had also been completely unaware of his many words […]

A Mental Derive Part #2

Picking Up Where I Left off – Ever since my first mental derive, it was always my intention to recommence this particular project.  now that the second draft of my research paper is nearing completion, I feel I am better able to return more fully to creative activities. Since part one of my mental derive, I didn’t totally abandon this project and I experimented with suspending some of the circles on a sheet of acetate between some thick heavy duty white elastic. Below is a gallery showing the results. This is a project I’d like to return to at some point,  but I don’t currently have the correct materials.  The acetate was far too thin and buckled under the strain of the elastic.  Therefore thicker acrylic is possibly a better choice.  The patterned discs/circles also had a habit of ‘pinging off’, so a better method of securing them is required.  However, I do think that there is room to develop this project further.     Moments in Time and Space Each black and white patterned circle/disc above, is a collage of many little moments in time.  For this reason I wanted to trial another form of suspension.  I am particularly […]

The Robots Are Here

Doom and Gloom or Hybrid Art Opportunity? – Love it or hate it – the robots are here!  Below is a selection of robots generated as a visual experiment.  No two robots are the same.  Each one has its own unique character.  They are all bringing balloons as a gift.  There are seventy of them in total, although more were generated.  They are all a by product of my research paper.  They were fun to generate and I’ll just leave them here.
