Barcelona Graffiti #2

Hidden Away – During my recent trip to Barcelona, I was was mesmerised by the colour and variety of the street art both in and around the city.  I briefly touched on this in part one of this post called ‘Barcelona Graffiti’.  I still don’t know exactly why I was so drawn to the graffiti (street art), except to say that the colours were amazing!  It seemed to relentlessly permeate throughout the whole fabric of the city, weaving a disjointed tapestry of colours.  Indeed it could even be described in some places as a riot of colour on an otherwise typical traditional cityscape and its walls.  All of this was in stark contrast to the walls of one of Barcelona’s most famous contemporary art museums, namely the MACBA.  Here there was no graffiti.  Everything inside was pristine with beautiful gleaming white walls.     A Short Recap Below is short video recap from Barcelona Graffit part one. It helps to illustrate the scale of graffiti and street art that can be found in and around the city.     In stark contrast to the brightly coloured graffiti in the video above, the following image gallery illustrates the crisp, clean, neutral […]

Zoom Session 30

End of Year 1 – Really? I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that this year has completely whizzed by! It hardly seems like yesterday that I was actually applying to join the course.  Sadly I had to miss the last session because of work commitments.  However, by visiting the course YouTube playlist, I managed to catch up on the last session which was a writing workshop with Laura Robertson.  As usual I have included a selection of slides for future reference. Throughout the session we had to perform a short series of writing tasks.  The first was a seemingly simple task of describing a shoe.  My thoughts were as follows: An item of footwear.  It can be made from a variety of materials.  It normally covers a foot or usually one shoe on each foot.  It might cover all of the foot or it may leave some of the foot exposed.  It can also come in a variety of colours. Laura then went on to read a few passages from a book listed in the slides below.  These passages demonstrated just how much detail could be found in the description of a shoe.  This was a great exercise in […]

Tutorial #3

My Third Tutorial – After a whirlwind of a few weeks at work, it was really nice to catch up with Jonathan.   Jonathan asked me a number of questions relating to what I thought was going well and what wasn’t working so well.  Currently, I’m really enjoying my Barcelona Graffiti project, but the greatest issues that I’m facing are time constraints due to work.  Luckily we are fast approaching the end of term now, so these pressures should hopefully ease.  I am also very excited about trying the 21 day challenge (Zoom session 29).  I think this is a great idea and it will help keep me focussed and working over the Summer holidays.  I’m particularly interested in Ai developments relating to art so that may be a starting point. I explained to Jonathan about how I would love to get the MACBA involved in some way with my Barcelona Graffiti project. Jonathan suggested that some animation of this project might work well and I think this is definitely something I’ll try.  He also asked why I needed the MACBA on board? Thinking about it, I guess I don’t really, and realistically would they even be interested?  I suppose nothing ventured […]

Supervisor Meeting #1

Meeting with Janet Waring Rago – Today was my first ‘one to one’ meeting with my research supervisor Janet Waring Rago.  I had met Janet briefly a few weeks ago (Zoom Session 26).  Already Janet had given me some great ideas, which I incorporated into my research paper.  However, today’s ‘one to one’ session really made me think!  It was a great opportunity to build on our last meeting ‘in group’.  We discussed ways that I could add depth to my project.  Looking back through my research paper I can see what Janet means in terms of widening the scope of my paper. Currently, my focus is quite narrow looking at whether people prefer robotic art as opposed to simple text to image art seen through a lens of empathy and sympathy.  Janet pointed out that even the way in which I communicate with ChatGPT is in a polite manner, therefore could this also be a source of primary research? We also talked about whether or not it would be a good idea to try to publish my research paper.  Janet felt that perhaps this would add a whole extra layer of complexity to the paper.  Therefore we decided that […]

Reflection Part 6 (Blogpost 100!)

It’s Actually Blogpost #118! – Having completed 30 weeks and indeed the whole of our first year, I thought that now would be the perfect time to reflect ahead of my last tutorial of this academic year with Jonathan.  It’s an opportunity to look back and really start to analyse the direction of travel of my work. As usual I will answer the following questions to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   WHAT HAVE I DONE SO FAR? Since my last reflective blog, as always, I have been very busy trying out new ideas and experimenting with them.  However, much of the work leading up to this reflective session has involved a lot of preparation for my initial research paper proposal. I found these preparations extremely valuable because it really did make me question exactly what it is that I am trying to achieve? Below is a short summary of everything that I’ve covered since my last reflective session along with links to the relevant blogs. Zoom Session 19 – The Low Residency […]

Barcelona Graffiti

Barcelona – Graffiti Capital of Europe? Is Barcelona the graffiti capital of Europe? Within only a short walking distance, the 1.15 minute clip below exposes the shear volume of street art around the city. In many cases residents have turned what is obviously a problem into something much more creative. They appear to have given up on trying to clear the graffiti. Instead, there is a sense that it is not just part of local society, it is in fact now embraced by it.  Below is a video short highlighting the sheer scale of the street art.  Calling it graffiti feels almost unkind because many of the colour schemes and designs seem carefully crafted as opposed to simply scrawled.  Interestingly, the famous street artist Banksy has his museum in Barcelona.  I wonder how much the colourful street art/graffiti clad surroundings influenced his decision?   Barcelona – Graffiti Capital of Europe?   One thing that particularly struck me while photographing all of the graffiti were the times that people seemed to have matching graffiti with clothes or other items.  Below are some examples where people’s outfits or items matched the graffiti surrounding them.  Maybe the graffiti was affecting their fashion choices […]

Little Wins #3

Gallery Interest As it’s a very busy time of year at work, I haven’t had a great deal of time to think about galleries.  However on Saturday I wandered into a new contemporary gallery in Dartmouth.  I had seen a large piece in the window which comprised stripes of colour.  The piece was similar to a series of ‘Touch Designer’ works that I had completed earlier this year, but as the viewer moved past the colours on this piece changed.  I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about the artwork and the artist who created it. I discovered that the artist was Lawrie Hutcheon who just like me enjoyed creating computer generated art.  I began to chat to the lady in the gallery.  I explained about my love of computer art and what I had done.  She said she was interested to see it.  As I was scrolling through my phone, she caught sight of some of my black and white weekly Zentangle work and asked if I had made any images into cards?  I explained that I hadn’t, and she said that her husband (the gallery owner) might like to talk to me further about pieces to go into the […]

Zoom Session 29

The Penultimate session for this Academic Year – This session was actually quite a poignant session for me, because work pressures will possibly stop me attending the last session of my first year.  Sadly there is no way that I can escape working on Tuesday next week – it’s one of our busiest weeks.  However, I will watch the recording and I still have two tutorials to come.  I honestly cannot believe that  the first year has gone!  Where did it go?  While pondering the swift passage of time I am pleased to blog about the session this week. This week we were asked to think about what success looks like, and more specifically what kind of metaphors and symbols come to mind when thinking about success as an artist.  I felt that success for me was being pleased with pieces of work that I have created.  More specifically success might be fame and fortune.  In our group discussion some even suggested power as a result of fame. Our group chat was interesting as we all had many different ideas.  I joked that I’d like to be given free tickets to Bilderberg, or become an honorary member of the World […]

Torbay Airshow 2023

Cockpit Shots – The beginning of June in Torbay has now become synonymous with the fantastic Torbay Airshow! As usual this year did not disappoint!  Roughly 3 years ago I treated myself to a Sigma 150mm-600mm telephoto lens.  I had partly purchased it so that I could shoot wildlife, but I was also excited to try it out at the Airshow. Last year I was really lucky, I managed to get a number of really photographically sharp ‘cockpit’ shots.  One of them even made the Fotospeed top 4 for the week, which I was  really pleased about.  The fist image (Jet Pitts Sabio image) listed directly below is the one that made the Fotospeed top 4 for the week.     Images from 2023 Below is a gallery of some of my favourite images from this year.  I’ve also added a ‘jazzy’ video which proved useful for social media.     Short Snappy Video for Social Media Below is a short video that I compiled for social media.

Zoom Session 28

Making Session with Sukie Sagoo-Reddy – Today we had another making session with Sukie Sagoo Reddy.  This was a really welcome break from writing and I always enjoy Sukie’s workshops as they give a lot of food for thought.  It was interesting that the workshop was very similar to the one we did a few weeks ago (Zoom Session 22), because this gave me the opportunity to see if I had improved at all?  A link to the slides from this workshop and the original  workshop are here.  These always prove useful to refer back to.  As with the first session we uploaded an image that covered the 5 senses.  I couldn’t find one of my own in time so I used one from the internet.  However for the second task I managed to find two images which had a connection.   Little Bee and Floral Pattern I chose the images below because the little bee is one of my favourite images that I have shot and the floral pattern seemed to work with it.  My thinking was flowers and bees.   Moving on from there we looked once again at the theme of chasing shadows.  I think that my […]
