Zoom Session 23

How to Read a Book & Other Ideas – This week was all about reading and getting the most from it.  Apparently Kevin Kelly the founder of Wired magazine had said that we are now in an age where we are moving from book literacy to screen literacy.  As part of this we discussed the F pattern of eye movements when tracked across a screen.  I always enjoy our group sessions and find the information from them really useful.  I discovered that that there is something called ChatPdf which I would like to explore further.  I would also like to try out ‘Voice Dream Reader’ and ‘Speechify’ which are text to audio generators. We also looked at the ‘Pomodoro’ technique as a way to approach the research for the research paper.  An outline of how this technique should be used is summarised in the slide selection below.  I intend to try this as I think it will be very helpful as both a time management and motivational tool. Perhaps the biggest takeaway for me this week though, was the notion of: ‘I feel’, ‘I wonder’, ‘I think’.  I’d never ever thought about something in those terms before and this week […]

Research Paper Journey #1

Crafting a Research Question – I think possibly one of the hardest aspects of formulating a research paper is to come up with a simple yet powerful question.  What that might look like at this stage, I’m not entirely sure.  Therefore I think that the most sensible approach for me is to write down all of my ideas.  I have a number of potential ideas pertaining to ‘Information Overload’ including: subliminal messaging, overlooked information, hidden information, coded information, changed information, missing information and the list goes on… During a couple of our zoom sessions we tried out continuous writing and I wondered if that would actually help me with my process of defining what it is I actually want to do?  Below is a short time-lapse video of me continuously free writing for around five minutes.   Free Writing Exercise My ‘Time of the Signs’ project really did enlighten me about the sheer volume of environmental information that we are all subjected to on a daily basis.  This led me to query whether or not this may be having a detrimental effect on humans?  It may well turn out that it has no effect at all except leaving a ‘messy’ […]

Jyll Bradley

Monday Guest Lectures – Jyll Bradley – I feel really privileged to have encountered the work of Jyll Bradley through the ‘Monday Guest Lectures’ slot.  Here is a short extract from her about page on her Jyll Bradley website:   About Jyll Bradley “Born Folkestone, UK, 1966. Lives and works in London. Jyll Bradley makes installations, films, drawings and sculptures. Her work first emerged in the late 1980’s within a cohort of artists interested in combining the formal vigour of Minimalism with ideas of identity and place. Light has been a constant protagonist in her practice, from her early photographic light-box installations to her work with fluorescent plexiglas. Her work often pairs organic and industrial materials, reflecting a desire to bring together different aspects of self – for instance her rural childhood and urban adulthood. Bradley’s work frequently engages with site and the creation of new spaces. Her acclaimed public realm commissions – including Green/Light (for M.R.) for The Folkestone Triennial and Dutch/Light for Turner Contemporary – reference generative structures such as hop gardens and glasshouses, expressing what she sees as the practical, spiritual and emotional work involved in growing a sense of self, place or community. Bradley’s sculptures have increasingly become sites of […]

Zoom Session 22 (Sukie Sagoo-Reddy)

Emerging Dialogues Through the Positioning of Textile and Visual Arrangements – I would really love to visit the college more often to do many of the workshops on offer.  I often find myself thinking, if only I had my time over again?  Therefore, whenever I get the opportunity to participate in any kind of workshop, be it online, or face to face, I’m always really excited.  This week was certainly no exception!  For a long time now I have been working both photographically and digitally in the flat 2d world of screens.  However this week it was all change. Sukie Sagoo-Reddy ran a thought provoking/food for thought workshop with us today. She took us through her Powerpoint presentation that was packed with both information and tasks for us to complete.  As usual I screen shot some of her slides as I find this a useful way of storing information for future reference.  I think that I will definitely be revisiting this.  Alongside Jonathan’s zoom session about the concept of a derive and the Processing Programming workshop, Sukie’s workshop also has to be one of my favourites to date.  I don’t think that I’m particularly good at 3d but I am […]

Craig Burnett

Monday Guest Lectures – Craig Burnett – Craig talks about his book on Philip Guston and his work ‘The Studio’ in 1969.  The thing that really struck me about this talk was Craig’s in-depth analysis of the artwork.  He hadn’t just analysed it on a surface level but he likened it to other artworks that may or may not have influenced Guston.   He even superimposed other images on top of Guston’s work  and even more interestingly he removed elements from Guston’s work to see how that impacted the piece.  He removed the smoke from the painting and commented on how its removal rendered the painting ‘boring’.  He showed how the work of other artists and poets and writers may very well have influenced Guston particularly the work of Barnett Newman.  He also gave a quote from Newman regarding abstract art: ‘The whole attitude of abstract painting, for example, has been such that it has reduced painting to an ornamental art whereby the surface picture is broken up in geometrical fashion into a new kind of design-image.  It is a decorative art built on a slogan of purism where the attempt is made for an unworldly statement.’  Barnett Newman 1943 […]

George Clark

Monday Guest Lectures – This week I finally had the opportunity to start catching up again on the Monday guest lectures.  I really enjoy listening to the guest lectures as I find they are always packed with lots of useful information.  This week I took a look at George Clark.  Below are a selection of his slides.  I like to keep these as reference. I particularly enjoyed George’s talk and perhaps the main ‘takeaways’ from his talk were always keep a lookout for collaborations.  The more collaborations the better because you never know what will come from them.  One thing he noted was how people had built up an impression of him in that he was very well travelled, worldly wise, knowledgeable etc.  George was surprised at this, but he said it wasn’t a bad thing just to run with it.  Therefore, if someone thinks that you are perhaps just that bit more successful than you actually are, then maybe it’s not such a bad thing not to enlighten them.   A Selection of Slides Below are a selection of slides from George’s presentation.   A Selection of Guest Lecture Artists

The Outernet London

To Showcase Here Would be Amazing! – While on my Low Residency I went for a walk into town as the events for the day were cancelled due to strikes.  It was on our way back that I discovered ‘The Outernet London’ which is part of Outernet Global.  This is an amazing space bringing together 21st century tech with some of the most digitally acclaimed artists of the day.  It is certainly is an experience!  While watching the screens, I thought that this would be a great place to showcase some of my work.  My feeling is that if you are going to dream then at least dream big! 😊 – I can’t imagine ever making it there, but at least it’s something to aim for? Maybe?  Below is a video short that I made during my time there.  I have so much more footage of this exhibition space, but the editing would be such an enormous task I decided to keep it short. However, one thing that certainly did ‘jump out’ at me was the complete contrast in the three spaces that I recently visited namely:  Salisbury Cathedral, The Old Saxon Church at Escombe and now the Outernet.  I wondered […]

The Saxon Church

A Beautiful Simple and Bright Meditative Space – During the Easter Break I had the privilege to visit, not only Salisbury Cathedral, but also one of Britain’s oldest Saxon Churches situated in the North East of England.  The Church is situated in a little rural village on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland near my hometown of Shildon.  While visiting relatives I decided to visit the church.  The locals have beautifully maintained the church over the years and it is still a place of worship.  Having just visited Salisbury Cathedral the old Saxon Church at Escombe was a stark contrast.  The ornate and ostentatious beauty of Salisbury Cathedral was not evident here.  Instead the interior was a bright, simple yet beautiful meditative space that had a very calming atmosphere.  The atmosphere was also calming in Salisbury Cathedral, but there was something quite special about old Saxon Church. I took the opportunity to shoot some video of both the interior and the exterior of the church.  Following is a video compilation of both stills and moving images.  I have also compiled a gallery of images that include information signs explaining more about the church and its origins.     The Old Saxon […]

Zoom Session 21

The Research Paper (An initial discussion) – Yesterday was our first day back and it was great to see everyone again!  This week we launched straight into a discussion about the research paper needed as part of our course.  This is probably an area that I am really under confident about, but I would really like to learn more about the process of doing this.  Over Easter I continued working on my blogs relating to the idea of a derive.  In my blog the ‘Time of the Signs’ I discovered that we are actually bombarded daily in our environments, with huge amounts of information, much of which we are probably unaware.  As part of the process of producing the research paper it is essential to look at something that intrigues us, or that bothers us.  Therefore, I was debating whether the idea of subliminal, visual information overload and its effects could be a good starting point?  For example do people prefer less information or visual clutter in their world?  Does a plethora of negative information unconsciously affect a person and can this be measured?  Is there a way to limit information overload?  Up until now, I really had not considered […]

Time of the Signs

A Physical Derive – Shortly after we had our Zoom Session 18 I decided to try out the concept of a physical derive.  My DSLR camera was at work, so I headed out armed with only my smartphone.  I had no preconceived ideas about where my walking or my thoughts would take me, I just decided to physically wander. On reaching the end of my street I was greeted by the huge sign for our local Funeral Director plus a plethora of road traffic cones and more signs around it.  I began to wonder about signs? At first I thought about taking photographs of purely negative signs, but then I thought, what about information overload?  Even in a short walk to the end of my street I had already encountered many signs packed with information.  I began to wonder what the ratio would be between negative and prohibitive signs and more positive and informative signs? Brixham is a small town and in my opinion ‘rammed to the rafters’ with signs, would a busy city centre be better or worse as a comparison in terms of signage? Then I began to wonder if there was a correlation between the variety and […]
