MOCO

Modern Contemporary Museum – Barcelona – The MOCO was one of the first museums in Barcelona that I visited and it certainly did not disappoint!  Below is a short video of my journey to the Contemporary Art gallery from the Hotel Barcelona.   A short walk to the MOCO     Moving with the Times Not only does the MOCO display static works of art they also display NFT’s, but more importantly they even have some artworks that utilise the power of augmented reality.  Guillermo Lorca produces large visually arresting works.  However these works take on a whole new life of their own when viewed through the MOCO’s very own augmented reality app called MOCO play.     Initially, I hadn’t really taken much notice of the signs for this app, but then my curiosity got the better of me and I’m really glad that it did.  Not only did viewing the artworks via this app add a whole new dimension to them, it also allowed the viewer to video record the experience in-app.  Below is a compilation video that I made of the short augmented reality videos I made in-app.  To say that Guillermo Lorca’s artworks really did come […]

Barcelona Trip

Time to Unwind and Return To Blogging – The last 3 weeks have been incredibly busy.  At work this is the time when we are preparing students for their art exams.  However, for me the biggest task and time consuming activity is the production of the end of year film.  There are more details about this in the blog post ‘A Temporary Distraction’.  I always enjoy seeing the wide variety of work produced by our students but assembling it all into a coherent narrative can often be quite challenging. After nearly completing the film, luckily I was able to take a break in Barcelona.  My students were now on a reading week, so it was the perfect opportunity to get away.  This blog is a record from the start of the trip in England, to the return journey and most importantly everything in between.   Sunday 14th May – Morning Sunrise The weather started off well enough and as we drove off to Bristol Airport we were greeted by a lovely sunrise.  Unfortunately my camera was packed away, but I did manage to capture this iPhone shot.  Apologies for the poor resolution.   What Greeted us at Bristol Airport Although […]

Zoom Session 25

Library & Research Tips with Julia Flood – In this session we used a workbook to help us with narrowing down our research and moving us closer to pinning down  our research question.  We also looked at how to conduct a Boolean search using a variety of characters acting as operators.   Below are some useful links from the session, including: Access to SCONUL Abe Books Archive.org Wob – a source of cheap books Workbook Link UAL Libsearch Library Guides     A Selection of Presentation Slides Below is a selection of slides from the presentation.  I found the workbook with the Boolean searches exercise particularly helpful.     Updated Zentangle Gallery As usual here is the updated Zentangle Gallery.

Coronation Bank Holiday

Mr. Sandman – Today was the start of the Coronation Bank Holiday Weekend, so I decided to go for a walk along the beach at Torquay.  Mr. Sandman, a local popular figure had stated to make one of his (locally famous) patterns in the sand.  I’d always wanted to shoot a time-lapse of one of his creations, but yet again I’d arrived too late!  However, I still thought it would be nice to shoot some quick footage of him working on his King Charles Coronation Piece.  Below is a video short of him working.   Mr. Sandman in Action

Blue Reef Aquarium

Well Worth a Visit – This weekend was the first weekend of the double bank holiday.  The family decided to visit Newquay in Cornwall.  One of the highlights of the visit was a trip to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.  A few years ago I had visited the aquarium and shot a few short clips but I wasn’t very satisfied with results, so I thought I would have another try.  Below is a short video that I created during our visit.   A Quick Edit This time I was much happier with the resulting video.  Whenever I visit somewhere or see something new I always like to record it because you just never know when that footage may just come in handy.  Although this video doesn’t really have much bearing on my project overall I still wanted to record it as it’s quite calming to watch.  It could be something to use or reflect upon at a later date perhaps?   The Blue Reef Aquarium Visit     Digital Art Fish have always fascinated me and on playing back the video I particularly liked the clip of the fish from the opening sequence.  So I decided to take a […]

A Temporary Distraction

The Annual College End of Year Film – Each year for the last few years I have been invited to produce our college end of year film.  It’s a long and quite complex task because it has to really showcase our department.  It needs to appeal to parents, staff and students alike.  Unfortunately because it is such a massive undertaking, my research has had to go on hold for a little while.  However in a couple of weeks I am due to fly out to Barcelona, so hopefully I‘ll have plenty of travelling time to catch up on my studies. In the meantime, I thought it would be interesting to document my film making process.  Each year I write all of the script, edit all of the video and use character animation software to enable animated characters to read the story’s narrative.  Often I also need to shoot my own video in order to help with the story and to fill in any gaps.  In fact I’m responsible for it all!  Over the last two years I’ve used a character I named ‘Horace ‘Boris’ Hedgehog’ (trust me, by watching the previous 2 films, his name becomes clear), this year it […]

Zoom Session 24

Photograph Analysis & Research – Christabel Harley I’m actually filling in this zoom session retrospectively as this is the first opportunity for the last 3 weeks that I’ve been able to blog.  This is one of our busiest times of year at work. Prepping all of the students for their art exams although, very enjoyable and rewarding, is also very stressful and time consuming.  Therefore it’s nice to be able to sit down and finally catch up on events. Christabel’s talk was excellent! I wasn’t sure if I was approaching my research paper properly.  However, when she explained about putting everything into a metaphorical ‘paper bag’, tucked safely away for further use, things started to make sense.  This is pretty much how I’ve been approaching the project up to now, so this validated my methodology. During our session we looked at a particular piece of research.  It was called ‘The Art of Semi Living’ by Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr. Looking at this paper was actually really helpful on two counts.  Firstly, we were tasked with reading only the first sentence of each paragraph to get a ‘feel’ for the paper.  This isn’t something that I had tried before, so […]

Little Wins #2

A Design for Life – Every so often something comes along regarding my work to make me smile.  For example I might get a little mention or someone might ask to use my work somewhere, or I may even get referenced in someone else’s work.  I began to note some of these instances (which I call) ‘Little Wins’.  One of my first little wins was a mention by Bromsgrove School, they had taken inspiration from some of my Instagram bubble images used my ideas in class.  However today, I’m now pleased to mention another.  A couple of weeks ago a load  acquaintance contacted me with some exciting news! For 3 years running I was the official photographer for the May Bank Holiday Pirates’ Festival, held in Brixham each year, right up until sadly it was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid.  Below are links to some of my highlights from each year.   The Brixham Pirates’ Festival 2017 The Brixham Pirates’ Festival 2018 The Brixham Pirates’ Festival 2019 NB: if the 2019 link does not work you can see a mash up of all of the images in a video short that I made this week.   2019 Link not […]

Research Paper Journey #3

Back to the Drawing Board – Unfortunately, after spending some time  brainstorming, then querying ChatGPT3, I was still no further forward in developing a research question.  At this point I felt that I needed to take a step away from it for a while and maybe create something instead.  I had wanted to develop my Zentangle paper sculptures further so I felt this was the perfect opportunity to set aside my research paper and move back to experimentation. It was during this period of time that I started to reflect on my study statement and exactly what it was that really interested me.  Since starting my MA in Fine Art Digital I have always had an interest in how artists can harness the power of Ai instead of being replaced by it.  Therefore, I decided to revisit my original study statement where I had initially proposed research into a new form of human, digital and Ai hybrid art. Reflecting on my study statement quite quickly led on to a number of questions about what I had previously proposed.  For example: Do people actually like Ai art? Do people like Digital Art? Do people like Digital Art more than Ai art? […]

Research Paper Journey #2

Consulting Ai – Having brainstormed a number of ideas which can be found at the start of my research journey, I felt it would be an interesting experiment to see what ChatGPT 3 made of my quest to produce a research paper.  Therefore, I decided to interrogate it to see if it could help pin down a research question for my paper.  The results of the conversation which I have detailed below were certainly extremely useful, but not in quite the way that I expected, or even intended.  Chat GPT3 was very good at coming up with ideas and suggestions evidenced below.  Unfortunately and for some unknown reason each answer left me feeling somewhat ‘flat’.  Indeed, what ChatGPT had actually shown me was that my Time of the Signs information overload topic was going to be a non starter.  Why?… because although I felt a sense of wonder about subliminal information overload in a visual sense, I just could not get excited about researching this topic.  There was a for me, (on reading back the advice from ChatGPT3), a massive disconnect.  I felt that from an art creation perspective information overload could be a great topic.  However the thought of […]
