Zoom Session 46

Presentations – My Turn – Today was my turn to present my research paper. I saw this as a great opportunity to retest my hypothesis.  I thought it would be interesting to make the presentation interactive and pose the same questions as were asked in my original Facebook Polls.  All of the background to this can be found in my research paper. I was pleased that people decided to join in. Although there were not as many respondents as in my original paper, the results were broadly in line with the findings from my Facebook Polls.  For example most people in my polls wanted to remain with their original choice of images and generally found the humanoid robotic art less disturbing than the AI labelled art. Ester was also presenting today.  Ester was examining the work of Rob Pruitt and emotions in art.  I found her presentation really interesting.  Ester noted that my paper and her paper could be potentially linked. This is because examining the emotions found in AI art would be a great next step in her investigations of art and emotion.  I’d love to do a joint paper with Ester on this, time permitting you never know? Pulp Exhibition

If at First You Don’t Succeed – Last year I entered some of my work for the annual ‘Pulp’ exhibition. It’s all about the creative use of paper. I love working with paper and card, so I wanted to give it a try.  Unfortunately, I was working blind, as I was unable to find any examples of work from previous shows.  Below is a photo of one of the pieces I entered.     Although, I was quite pleased with my work at the time, having visited the ‘Pulp’ exhibition (Bovey Tracey), I can understand why my piece wasn’t a fit. However, I left the gallery feeling incredibly inspired. I’ve pasted a selection of works into a photo gallery below.  I’m hoping that there will be another call for entries this year. This is because I feel my work has come a long way since last year.     A Selection of Pulp Art Pieces Below is a selection of art pieces from the Pulp exhibition.  There were also some amazing cardboard sculptures by James Lake. I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition and I’ve got lots of ideas for this year if there is another call for paper artists.

Little Wins #6

Off to a New Home – Today my mobile is off to a new home for a little while. It’s headed off to the Paradiso gallery at Bovey Tracey. Where I’ll be one of only 10 artists exhibiting there.       The Exhibition Below is a copy of the official flyer for the show.     Mobile in situ Below is a short video of the mobile in situ.

Research Paper Slides

A Break from Making – Today I had an enforced break from my mobile making. Next week it is my turn to present my research paper so I felt that I really should start to work on it.  Unfortunately when I start something I always need to finish it.  So, in the end I spent the whole of today planning it out and designing the slides.  It’s nearly midnight now and I’ve just finished. I’ve had to stop looking at it as every time I do, I keep seeing little errors that really ‘bug’ me. However, here is my final draft (or at least for now).   Research Presentation Slides Below are my research presentation slides – please use the text link to access the full presentation PDF.  Here is the full research paper as a recap if anyone wants to see it.   Karyn Easton – Research Paper Presentation

Gutted

Win Some – Lose Some – I was so hoping that I’d be chosen for the ‘Mattering Life’ residency.  Unfortunately it was not to be 🙁 I was absolutely gutted!  A lot of my photographic work in the past has been very organic, so I was really hoping I was a good fit.  Sadly it was a no – although the organiser did reply to me to say I was at the top of the reserve list, which was really kind.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a place might still become available, so please wish me luck. As a result of a number of rejections lately, I decided to add a category called ‘Rejection’.  I’m not entirely sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing at this stage.  I’m hoping that too many rejections will motivate me to work harder? Of course I might just give up, but I guess there’s always those little wins to help keep me going. However, ‘on the up side’ a local gallery has expressed an interest in my mobile.  I’m so excited! Maybe today hasn’t been so disappointing after all.

Keep it Moving

Small Steps – Big Changes. I had to write yesterday off almost completely as I had so many non MA activities to complete.  These duties ranged from setting up a new phone for a family member, to composing and posting an important letter.  However, today was much more productive. I managed to test my concept and augment a number of my mobile elements.   Early indicators suggest that ‘all things going well’ – I should be able to realise my vision.  My greatest fear was that the mobile wouldn’t augment very well.  I also worried that the elements were too close together, and as such would interfere with one another when augmenting.  It appears that as long as the user/viewer is careful then each item should augment separately.  Up to this point it has been a bit of a risk.  Today the concept however was tested and seems to work. Athena the robot continues to 3d print but this activity is also not without risk.  Jamie (my collaboration partner’s) 3d printer isn’t always consistent and parts often become loose from the 3d printer bed.  This ultimately leads to print failures which is slowing down the project. On a more positive […]

Athena

Athena the Robot – I decided that I couldn’t launch into my final major project without Athena my robot from Unit 2.  As my work now involves looking at Art from the perspective of a computer or robot, I felt I needed some form of robotic representation in my my final piece. I have made a conscious decision not to use text to image AI art in my work.  Therefore, it was important to have Athena come to life in a very physical way.  Working with 3d printable files from the PIB project. I am collaborating with Jamie Easton to produce my very own 3d printed robot ‘Athena’.

Tutorial #5

My Fifth Tutorial – Today I had my tutorial with Betty.  I felt it was a really good session because Betty asked me a number of searching questions.  I thought that I had everything clear in my head about my project, but actually Betty picked up on a number of issues which has given me a lot of food for thought.   Things we talked about included: The consideration of those people working in AI who are tagging images and doing all of the ‘heavy lifting’. Deciding how much of a platform I would like to give to people (key figures in AI development), who already have a large platform.  Might it be better to look at lesser known people working in the AI industry? Why choose to produce a mobile and not a static art piece? Where to show my work – would the CSM exhibition count as a public viewing? How can I ensure that all elements of the piece are accessible to everyone?   I thoroughly enjoyed my chat with Betty because it was really good to have someone really press me about my work.   There are definitely things I’m going to change as a direct […]

Reflection Part 7

Looking Back on This Term – It’s not actually that long since I reflected on my work. My last analysis was for the final learning objective of Unit 2.  A recap of everything that I did for this unit can be found here. Following on from Unit 2, below are my thoughts from the start of Unit 3.   Below are a set of questions that I use to help with the reflective process: What have you done so far? What have you discovered so far? What will you change because of what you have discovered? What will you do next?   WHAT HAVE I DONE SO FAR? Since the end of last term, I’ve been acutely aware that time is slipping away.  Therefore, as soon as Unit 2 was complete, I began thinking about Unit 3. My primary aim was one of consolidation.  In Unit 2 I had been exploring so many ideas that I felt now it was time to bring everything together.  Here is a short recap of what I’ve been doing since the beginning of this year up to this point in time.   Right at the very end of term I was already thinking ahead […]

The Concept

Hidden Depths – I have decided to call my mobile ‘The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’.  My mobile represents a ‘balance’ of power play between the major players in the AI art generation industries, versus the millions of voiceless, hidden artists who had their images used (often without permission) to feed machine learning algorithms.  The mobile is based on binary code and the lines of code spell out the words ‘Unity in Bits’. Why ‘Unity in Bits’? This is an ambiguous play on words.  The rise of the digital age coupled with social media and AI has led to a fragmentation of our society – namely, our ‘unity in bits’.  For example we have divided communities, surveillance capitalism and lack of free speech.  However, I hope that through interaction with my mobile ‘unity can be found in bits’ only this time ‘bits’ refers to the ‘bits’ and ‘bytes’ of binary code. My mobile project poses the question can that which has sought to divide us, actually bring us closer together?
