Blue Reef Aquarium

Well Worth a Visit – This weekend was the first weekend of the double bank holiday.  The family decided to visit Newquay in Cornwall.  One of the highlights of the visit was a trip to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.  A few years ago I had visited the aquarium and shot a few short clips but I wasn’t very satisfied with results, so I thought I would have another try.  Below is a short video that I created during our visit.   A Quick Edit This time I was much happier with the resulting video.  Whenever I visit somewhere or see something new I always like to record it because you just never know when that footage may just come in handy.  Although this video doesn’t really have much bearing on my project overall I still wanted to record it as it’s quite calming to watch.  It could be something to use or reflect upon at a later date perhaps?   The Blue Reef Aquarium Visit     Digital Art Fish have always fascinated me and on playing back the video I particularly liked the clip of the fish from the opening sequence.  So I decided to take a […]

A Temporary Distraction

The Annual College End of Year Film – Each year for the last few years I have been invited to produce our college end of year film.  It’s a long and quite complex task because it has to really showcase our department.  It needs to appeal to parents, staff and students alike.  Unfortunately because it is such a massive undertaking, my research has had to go on hold for a little while.  However in a couple of weeks I am due to fly out to Barcelona, so hopefully I‘ll have plenty of travelling time to catch up on my studies. In the meantime, I thought it would be interesting to document my film making process.  Each year I write all of the script, edit all of the video and use character animation software to enable animated characters to read the story’s narrative.  Often I also need to shoot my own video in order to help with the story and to fill in any gaps.  In fact I’m responsible for it all!  Over the last two years I’ve used a character I named ‘Horace ‘Boris’ Hedgehog’ (trust me, by watching the previous 2 films, his name becomes clear), this year it […]

The Outernet London

To Showcase Here Would be Amazing! – While on my Low Residency I went for a walk into town as the events for the day were cancelled due to strikes.  It was on our way back that I discovered ‘The Outernet London’ which is part of Outernet Global.  This is an amazing space bringing together 21st century tech with some of the most digitally acclaimed artists of the day.  It is certainly is an experience!  While watching the screens, I thought that this would be a great place to showcase some of my work.  My feeling is that if you are going to dream then at least dream big! 😊 – I can’t imagine ever making it there, but at least it’s something to aim for? Maybe?  Below is a video short that I made during my time there.  I have so much more footage of this exhibition space, but the editing would be such an enormous task I decided to keep it short. However, one thing that certainly did ‘jump out’ at me was the complete contrast in the three spaces that I recently visited namely:  Salisbury Cathedral, The Old Saxon Church at Escombe and now the Outernet.  I wondered […]

The Saxon Church

A Beautiful Simple and Bright Meditative Space – During the Easter Break I had the privilege to visit, not only Salisbury Cathedral, but also one of Britain’s oldest Saxon Churches situated in the North East of England.  The Church is situated in a little rural village on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland near my hometown of Shildon.  While visiting relatives I decided to visit the church.  The locals have beautifully maintained the church over the years and it is still a place of worship.  Having just visited Salisbury Cathedral the old Saxon Church at Escombe was a stark contrast.  The ornate and ostentatious beauty of Salisbury Cathedral was not evident here.  Instead the interior was a bright, simple yet beautiful meditative space that had a very calming atmosphere.  The atmosphere was also calming in Salisbury Cathedral, but there was something quite special about old Saxon Church. I took the opportunity to shoot some video of both the interior and the exterior of the church.  Following is a video compilation of both stills and moving images.  I have also compiled a gallery of images that include information signs explaining more about the church and its origins.     The Old Saxon […]

Time of the Signs

A Physical Derive – Shortly after we had our Zoom Session 18 I decided to try out the concept of a physical derive.  My DSLR camera was at work, so I headed out armed with only my smartphone.  I had no preconceived ideas about where my walking or my thoughts would take me, I just decided to physically wander. On reaching the end of my street I was greeted by the huge sign for our local Funeral Director plus a plethora of road traffic cones and more signs around it.  I began to wonder about signs? At first I thought about taking photographs of purely negative signs, but then I thought, what about information overload?  Even in a short walk to the end of my street I had already encountered many signs packed with information.  I began to wonder what the ratio would be between negative and prohibitive signs and more positive and informative signs? Brixham is a small town and in my opinion ‘rammed to the rafters’ with signs, would a busy city centre be better or worse as a comparison in terms of signage? Then I began to wonder if there was a correlation between the variety and […]

Visit to Salisbury

Clocks, Magna Carta and Old Sarum – This year I had the opportunity to visit Salisbury shortly after returning from the Low Residency in London.  Apparently there is a pretty amazing clock (😳), but I was much more interested in both the Cathedral and one of the copies of the Magna Carta housed inside.  I also wanted to take the opportunity to visit Old Sarum, a ruin of an old Medieval site.   Salisbury Cathedral Below is a short video compilation taken both inside and outside of the Salisbury Cathedral.  Not only was I interested in the Cathedral, the Magna Carta and all of the history surrounding them both, I also wanted to gather both historical and interesting imagery as part of a wider project that I have planned.  Shortly after my visit to the Cathedral I visited one of Britain’s oldest Saxon Churches (Circa 675 AD).  I found the contrast in these two places of worship very interesting.  Salisbury Cathedral is a very ornate and beautiful space, but there is also something very special about the simplicity and peacefulness of the Old Saxon Church in Escombe.       Video Compilation of Images from Salisbury Cathedral     Replicas […]

Zoom Session 19 (Low Residency)

Low Residency Part 1 – This week there wasn’t a formal zoom meeting due to preparations for both the Interim show and the Low Residency.  There won’t be a formal zoom session next week either as this will be right in the middle of the Low Residency.  For this reason I have decided to dedicate both zoom session slots to documenting both the Interim Show and the Low Residency.  Part 1 will cover the Interim show Private View and Low Residency activities covering Thursday 9th March until Sunday 12th March.  I will cover Part 2 next week from Monday 13th March until Thursday 16th of March.   The Interim Show (Thursday 9th March – 6.00pm-9.00pm) I was really excited to be travelling to the Low Residency in London. I’m not the most confident of travellers, so I was lucky to have my husband accompany me.  We left my car at Paignton boarded the train and headed off to our change at Newton Abbot railway station.     Once we arrived at Paddington, we bought some lunch  and then set off on the new Elizabeth Line heading East towards Abbey Wood.  Our actual stop was Farringdon.   We departed the train […]

Zoom Session 18

Derive, Derive & Thermodynamics – This weeks talk was really interesting and today inspired me to get out of my armchair and go for a wander.  In our session we were discussing the concept of a derive or simply derive.  In our discussion group I expressed my concern that Ai could potentially be robbing us of many jobs in the creative industry.  However during our five minutes of contemplation Bea pointed out that nothing is ever really destroyed.  She had been thinking about Thermodynamics and the idea that actually things just change energy is not destroyed it just changes.   We spoke about how analogue photography had now morphed into a genre in its own right in the wake of the digital revolution. I can honestly say that I felt very uplifted after our conversation.  In fact I was really taken with the whole concept of a derive.  It wasn’t something that I had come across before but it was certainly something that I wanted to try. The very next day I set out on a long walk around town (Brixham in Devon).  During that walk gave me time and space to think and reflect.  It also gave me time […]

Failure

Reaching a Plateau – Up to know I feel quite lucky because I’ve generally quite like most of my experiments, but for some reason this one made me really recoil!  I hate everything about it – even a dabble with Ai couldn’t convince me otherwise.  I don’t think I can remember a time that I’ve been so disappointed in anything that I’ve done before. I also need to stay away from Pinterest – the more beautiful artwork I see the more self critical I become and it’s not helpful.   I feel now is the time I need to take a step back.  I need to reflect on what I have done so far and consider what my next steps might be.  As per my outline plan ideally I should be doing more research right now and I tend to agree. Over the weekend I decided to try my hand at paper sculpture.  It’s something that I’m incredibly interested in, but I’ve never really had time to explore it in any meaningful way.  Below is my journey into this medium and some of the results from it.  I just can’t get excited about it at all.  However, I always like […]

Jason Schulman – Inspired Work

Hidden Light and Colours – I particularly admire the work by Jason Schulman.  I discovered him last week and ever since I stumbled across his work I have been absolutely ‘sold’ on it. Schulman records light with his camera across the entirety of a film.  His work has been incorrectly likened to that of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s ‘Cinema Halls’.  Schulman explains more about this in his interview with Dominic Jaeckle.  Although the process of recording the entirety of the film is quite straightforward, it appears that Schulman is somewhat a pioneer in the area of recording films. I am a huge fan of slow shutter techniques, which I believe were used in the creation of both Sugimoto and Schulman’s images.  Therefore I could not resist experimenting further using the work of Schulman and Sugimoto as a starting point.  I find the notion of light being recorded and compounded into one image very appealing.  Generally we never see light compounded in such a way so as to reveal a multitude of hidden colours and tones.   Throughout my project I have been searching for the ‘hidden’ in whatever shape or form that may take.  Schulman’s work reveals the beauty hidden in compounded […]
