Supervisor Meeting #1

Meeting with Janet Waring Rago – Today was my first ‘one to one’ meeting with my research supervisor Janet Waring Rago.  I had met Janet briefly a few weeks ago (Zoom Session 26).  Already Janet had given me some great ideas, which I incorporated into my research paper.  However, today’s ‘one to one’ session really made me think!  It was a great opportunity to build on our last meeting ‘in group’.  We discussed ways that I could add depth to my project.  Looking back through my research paper I can see what Janet means in terms of widening the scope of my paper. Currently, my focus is quite narrow looking at whether people prefer robotic art as opposed to simple text to image art seen through a lens of empathy and sympathy.  Janet pointed out that even the way in which I communicate with ChatGPT is in a polite manner, therefore could this also be a source of primary research? We also talked about whether or not it would be a good idea to try to publish my research paper.  Janet felt that perhaps this would add a whole extra layer of complexity to the paper.  Therefore we decided that […]

Research Paper Proposal

Research Paper Proposal – Draft #1 Title: Exploring the Role of Empathy in Mitigating Negative Bias towards AI Art: A Comparative Study of Humanoid Robots and Algorithmic Text-to-Image Generation   Abstract: This research proposal aims to investigate the role of empathy in mitigating the negative bias against AI art, specifically comparing the potential of humanoid robots in eliciting empathy as opposed to simple algorithmic text-to-image generation. The proposal seeks to explore whether art created by humanoid robots is preferable to art created by Ai text to image generation. By examining the psychological factors influencing art reception and empathy, the study seeks to examine whether or not the embodiment of human-like qualities in humanoid robots can enhance emotional connections, reduce negative bias, and foster a deeper appreciation of AI-generated art.   Keywords: Humanoid robots, AI-generated art, Empathy, Negative bias, Art perception, Emotional connection, Robotic creativity, Human-robot interaction, Art appreciation, Algorithmic art, Emotional engagement, Bias mitigation, Human-like qualities, AI art evaluation, Artistic expression, Aesthetic appeal, Perception of authenticity, Emotional response, Human-machine collaboration, Ethical considerations   Introduction: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed various domains, including the realm of art. Through sophisticated algorithms, AI systems can now generate art autonomously, blurring the boundaries between human and machine creativity. However, AI-generated art often faces skepticism and negative bias due to the perceived absence of […]

Research Sources and Notes

A Place for All Research, Notes, Ideas and Appendices – Here is where I will document some of my ideas, research sources and notes for the research paper.  The following list is in chronological order starting with the newest first.  This page will act as my central store of everything I discover.   A link to this page can also be found on my ‘Research Timeline’ page which documents my whole research journey leading up to the production of the final research paper.   FACEBOOK POLL – INVESTIGATING IMAGE PREFERENCES & IMAGE LOYALTY  Email Correspondence with Humanoid Robotic Manufacturers    Below are a selection of Craft Research Journals that were read to establish how an art based research paper might look.   Scary Videos about Ai       Experimental ideas. Take an animated robot – have it present some of ‘its’ art but have it explain that it was up against a problem (to be defined at a later stage) in creating its art.  Next show text to image created art by a person.  Ask the respondents to rate which art they think is better.   Case Study – A Spectator’s View of ‘Can’t Help Myself’ by Sun Yuan […]

Research Paper Journey #4

Using What I Learned – Over the last few zoom sessions, we have been looking at a variety of tips and techniques to help with our research paper writing.  For example: Zoom Session 21 – The Research Paper, an initial discussion Zoom Session 23 – How to Read a Book and Other Ideas Zoom Session 24 – Photograph Analysis with Christabel Harley Zoom Session 25 – Library and Research Tips with Julia Flood Zoom Session 26 – Meet the Supervisor with Janet Waring Rego   All of the sessions listed above proved to be incredibly helpful from: learning how to set aside planned time for research using the Pomodoro technique, to reading only the first sentence of each paragraph in a research paper. An example of the Pomodoro technique is as follows:   The Pomodoro Technique includes five basic steps: Decide on the task you need to do. Set a timer for 25 minutes. Focus only on your task until the timer rings. Take a five-minute break. After every four Pomodoros, take a longer 15–30 minute break.   Taking into account everything that we have learned during these sessions I feel that I’m now ready to start putting pen to […]

Zoom Session 26

Meet the Supervisor – Janet Waring Rago Today was an exciting day because we got to meet our supervisor.  This will be the person to guide us through the task of compiling our research paper.  Jonathan placed us in groups with our respective supervisors.  My supervisor is Janet Waring Rago and my group consists of Thomas, Rachael, Sue, Ellie, Jason and me.  We had a really good ‘get to know you’ session where we all discussed our projects. What struck me most was a feeling that we are all in this together. As such people were very helpful in bringing their comments and ideas to the table in order to help other students in the group.  An interesting link mentioned during the session was Academia.edu, which I intend to check out. Speaking with Janet was very useful and helped me to further narrow my research question.  I am really looking forward to working with Janet on my research paper.     Updated Zentangle Gallery As usual here is the updated Zentangle Gallery.  This continues to build each week as I practice my drawing and mark making.

Zoom Session 25

Library & Research Tips with Julia Flood – In this session we used a workbook to help us with narrowing down our research and moving us closer to pinning down  our research question.  We also looked at how to conduct a Boolean search using a variety of characters acting as operators.   Below are some useful links from the session, including: Access to SCONUL Abe Books Archive.org Wob – a source of cheap books Workbook Link UAL Libsearch Library Guides     A Selection of Presentation Slides Below is a selection of slides from the presentation.  I found the workbook with the Boolean searches exercise particularly helpful.     Updated Zentangle Gallery As usual here is the updated Zentangle Gallery.

Zoom Session 24

Photograph Analysis & Research – Christabel Harley I’m actually filling in this zoom session retrospectively as this is the first opportunity for the last 3 weeks that I’ve been able to blog.  This is one of our busiest times of year at work. Prepping all of the students for their art exams although, very enjoyable and rewarding, is also very stressful and time consuming.  Therefore it’s nice to be able to sit down and finally catch up on events. Christabel’s talk was excellent! I wasn’t sure if I was approaching my research paper properly.  However, when she explained about putting everything into a metaphorical ‘paper bag’, tucked safely away for further use, things started to make sense.  This is pretty much how I’ve been approaching the project up to now, so this validated my methodology. During our session we looked at a particular piece of research.  It was called ‘The Art of Semi Living’ by Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr. Looking at this paper was actually really helpful on two counts.  Firstly, we were tasked with reading only the first sentence of each paragraph to get a ‘feel’ for the paper.  This isn’t something that I had tried before, so […]

Research Paper Journey #3

Back to the Drawing Board – Unfortunately, after spending some time  brainstorming, then querying ChatGPT3, I was still no further forward in developing a research question.  At this point I felt that I needed to take a step away from it for a while and maybe create something instead.  I had wanted to develop my Zentangle paper sculptures further so I felt this was the perfect opportunity to set aside my research paper and move back to experimentation. It was during this period of time that I started to reflect on my study statement and exactly what it was that really interested me.  Since starting my MA in Fine Art Digital I have always had an interest in how artists can harness the power of Ai instead of being replaced by it.  Therefore, I decided to revisit my original study statement where I had initially proposed research into a new form of human, digital and Ai hybrid art. Reflecting on my study statement quite quickly led on to a number of questions about what I had previously proposed.  For example: Do people actually like Ai art? Do people like Digital Art? Do people like Digital Art more than Ai art? […]

Research Paper Journey #2

Consulting Ai – Having brainstormed a number of ideas which can be found at the start of my research journey, I felt it would be an interesting experiment to see what ChatGPT 3 made of my quest to produce a research paper.  Therefore, I decided to interrogate it to see if it could help pin down a research question for my paper.  The results of the conversation which I have detailed below were certainly extremely useful, but not in quite the way that I expected, or even intended.  Chat GPT3 was very good at coming up with ideas and suggestions evidenced below.  Unfortunately and for some unknown reason each answer left me feeling somewhat ‘flat’.  Indeed, what ChatGPT had actually shown me was that my Time of the Signs information overload topic was going to be a non starter.  Why?… because although I felt a sense of wonder about subliminal information overload in a visual sense, I just could not get excited about researching this topic.  There was a for me, (on reading back the advice from ChatGPT3), a massive disconnect.  I felt that from an art creation perspective information overload could be a great topic.  However the thought of […]
