Deep Reflection

Summary of My Reflective Process – Over the last two years, I’ve found it incredibly useful to engage in a deep reflective process.  This has proven an invaluable activity in helping to shape my work moving forwards. Throughout my course I have always made time to look back on what I have been doing with a critical eye.  Below are all of the links associated with this activity.   My 2 Year Reflective and Evaluative Process Reflection Part#1 Reflection Part#2 Reflection Part#3 Reflection Part#4 Reflection Part#5 Reflection Part#6 Reflection Part#7 Reflection Part#8   Additional Reflection (Unit 2)

Cryptosporidium Outbreak

Cryptosporidium Outbreak in Brixham – Over the last few weeks I have not been feeling well at all.  I strongly suspected that I had contracted cryptosporidium again. I recognised all the symptoms as I had fallen victim to it before.  It is a very nasty parasite and the first time round it made me extremely ill.  When it was officially confirmed the first time, my GP said he was unsurprised at how bad I was feeling as it can be a killer.  Luckily this time, although my symptoms were still pretty severe I think that some residual immunity from the first bout must have helped.  I did find working very difficult during this period, but I’m glad to say that very slowly I’m on the mend. Interestingly, I’ve just received a service text message from South West Water telling me that I should boil all of my water as I’m in an affected area.  What I find odd is that they are only just reporting this now.  I’ve had crypto symptoms for weeks.  Below are some links to the media coverage surrounding this current outbreak.   Media Coverage Devon Live – Cryptosporidium Cases Rise Devon Live – Cryptosporidium Confirmed in […]

Summary LO1

Summary of LO1 – Need a quick summary? Please access the Summary Documents: Summary LO1          Summary LO2          Summary LO3     Please find below a summary of LO1.  The full LO1 document can be found here.   Background I initially aimed to explore human, digital, and AI hybrid art, focusing on hidden elements to enhance its appeal. Fascinated by AI art, I used new AI tools extensively. However, my enthusiasm waned after discovering widespread negative bias towards AI art and unethical image tagging practices. This led me to the concept of ‘Balance of Power’, emphasising fairness between tech giants and artists. While working on augmented reality (AR) for a trilogy of books, I became intrigued by how AR ‘sticks’ to objects, inspiring me to integrate AR with mobiles, influenced by Alexander Calder’s work. My experiments confirmed AR could augment moving structures and their shadows. This resulted in the ‘Balance of Power – Unity in Bits’ mobile, with elements encoded in binary and featuring hidden voices of artists. It was exhibited and well-received, prompting a larger version. The mobile aims to highlight hidden artists’ contributions, reflecting on AI’s impact on art.   Digital […]

Summary LO2

Summary of LO2  – Need a quick summary? Please access the Summary Documents: Summary LO1          Summary LO2          Summary LO3     Please find below a summary of LO2.  The full LO2 document can be found here.   Reflective Practice Throughout the MA Fine Art Digital course, I have documented my reflective and evaluative practice in a ‘Deep Reflection’ blogpost. This blogpost captures my process, progress, and the essence of my work.     Background Over the past two years, I experimented with various physical, digital, and AI processes. This started with drawing experiments using a ‘Berol’ fine liner pen, evolving into intricate ‘Zentangle’ designs. These hand-drawn images were digitally refined and unexpectedly became integral to my final project.   Zentangle Gallery     21 Day Challenge A Zoom session introduced a 21-day challenge, leading me to explore augmented reality (AR). I learned about AR’s potential to hide multimedia content within physical spaces.  Augmented reality (AR) then became incorporated into my project work and was a very useful addition to my self-published books.     Turning Point My Research revealed a general dislike for AI-generated art due to its perceived lack of soul […]

Summary LO3

Summary of LO3 – Need a quick summary? Please access the Summary Documents: Summary LO1          Summary LO2          Summary LO3     Please find below a summary of LO3.  The full LO3 document can be found here.   This final section chronicles the transformative journey I took over the course of my art studies, focusing on my exploration of the intersection between traditional art forms and emerging AI technologies. Initially rooted in macro photography, I felt a deep sense of loss as AI industrialised art began to overshadow traditional art practices. This prompted a shift in my creative approach, leading me to explore generative and hybrid art forms that integrate human, digital, and AI elements. Throughout my research and practice, I grappled with the ethical and moral implications of AI in the art world. While recognising the potential of AI to democratise artistic expression, I also identified significant concerns regarding the ethical use and impact of AI-generated art. This dual perspective fueled my exploration and culminated in the creation of “The Balance of Power – Unity in Bits,” a mobile art piece symbolising the need for balance between technological advancement and artistic integrity. Procrastination

Banishing Procrastination – Today has been a really tough day!  I have procrastinated for a while about starting my ‘Unit 3’ blog curation and today was no exception.  However, at least today I finally managed to make a start.  I’m still feeling unwell and I think this has been adding to my writers’ block.  I’ve made nearly three hundred journal entries now and the thought of organising them fills me with dread!  I honestly don’t know where to start. I’m hoping that I can finish soon though, as there is still so much that I would like to do.  I’d love to create little handmade books to accompany my mobile.  I also need to add some of the new quotes from artists that I received for my mobile.  I’ve got a full action plan to write regarding the final segment of ‘Unit 3’ and tomorrow I need to start pulling together all of my processes from the creation of my final outcomes.

Pen Drawings

Original Drawings – I’ve never actually revealed any process behind the textural images that I used on the elements of the ‘Balance of Power Mobile’.  I feel that now might be a good time to show some of them.  As my drawings were actually always meant to be incidental to my work I tended to neglect this.  It was just idle doodling on my part – or was it?  I found that I really enjoyed the digitisation process of the drawings and particularly cleaning them up.  I found sitting quietly with ‘Photoshop Fix’  and its excellent spot healing brush was really quite cathartic. As I mentioned in earlier posts I gave myself strict rules for these designs. They had to be drawn freehand and if any mistakes were made the mistakes had to be woven into the design and not erased or covered up. I’m not entirely sure why I self imposed these rules other than to make the drawing process more interesting and challenging.  Below are a selection of images from my sketch books.     A Selection of Original Pen Drawings

Blog Curation

Pulling Together Two Years of Work – I’m getting very close now to having completed 300 blogs.  When I add in my research paper and study statement and unit pages, then I will have surpassed this figure for writing in general. I may still hit my target of 300 blogs.  However, I only want to do this if the work I’m blogging about is relevant to my MA, like the material that’s gone before. Over the last two years, I have read so many books, visited so many galleries, listened to so many artists talks and documented so many of my experiments and creations, that it has resulted in the following:   162 image galleries containing information about books I’ve read, artist talks, gallery visits, and project images etc. 5224 images that I shot over the course of the two years. 87 Before and After sliders (here is an example of these). I have shot approximately 2,500 video clips and animations, that have gone into the making of 230 films dispersed throughout my blogposts. I created around 43 hand drawn and digitised Zentangle drawings, that now form textural patterns on my final piece (The Balance of Power Mobile). I’ve self […]

Book Photography

Product Photography for the Balance of Power Book – My book is now fully augmented and the whole of its contents can be viewed in the augmented reality video that I made to accompany the ‘Balance of Power Mobile.  A full digital copy of the book can be found here. The next step in my process was to create an image that would represent my book – something that I could use for social media posts and head up any literature that I might like to send out.  It might even form the cover of a brochure about the project as a whole.     Contact Sheets from Experimental Shoots   Refining the Concepts There are many references to nature in my ‘Balance of Power’ Final 5 Minute Video.  Therefore, in the first instance I decided to shoot my books outdoors.  One of my chosen concepts to explore was having my books with foliage or vines wrapped around it.  Below are some of the concepts that I decided to refine further. The original ‘Balance of Power’ Book was a large scale book (30 x 30cm), but sadly when I came to scale the book down, the title wasn’t as prominent. […]

Zoom Session 55

Grotto Money Allocation, Show Planning, and Assessment Information – I was really sad because I had to miss this session.  My students were were all due to begin their Level 3 Art and Design Exam the very next day, so I was called upon to help.  I know how nervous many of them were, so although I was disappointed to miss my session, I was also pleased to help.  I know how much they really needed to see a friendly face.  They have been a great bunch of students and I wish them all the best with their external assessments. I’ve just finished catching up on the recording for this week.  The Grotto money allocation has been decided and the exhibition space layout is coming along nicely.  Jonathan also provided some very useful information regarding grades and assessments. I’ve still got such a long way to go in terms of curating my blog. I really am struggling to ‘wrap my head around’ the fact that the course will be complete in only 5 weeks from now. It has been such an integral part of my life for the last couple of years that I’m currently feeling a bit lost.  However, […]
